Another unwanted, extended rest is coming for Max Scherzer, the Mets’ ace right-hander: He has been suspended for 10 games by Major League Baseball for violating prohibitions on foreign substances. Scherzer, who was ejected from the Mets’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday in the fourth inning, also was fined an undisclosed amount. The punishment was announced early Thursday evening before the Mets opened their four-game weekend series in San Francisco against the Giants. Scherzer had planned to appeal the suspension, according to his agent, Scott Boras, but then he told reporters before Thursday’s game that he would instead accept the ban. According to a person familiar with the proceedings, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Scherzer filed the appeal but agreed to drop it once M.L.B.

The Blues are on course to have their lowest scoring season in Premier League history with their current total of 30 goals.

On the day Chelsea unveiled Graham Potter as its new head coach last September, the club went to great lengths to show it was heading in a new direction. The days of short-term spending and disposable managers were gone, along with Chelsea’s former owner, the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich . Under its new ownership group, led by the American investor and Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, the club was going to build something for the future with what it called “one of the most exciting coaches in the game.” At 47, Potter was young, proven in the Premier League, and above all, the club said, “an innovator.”

In August 2021, a group of Major League Baseball executives sat down at a minor league game in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. As the Quakes, the Low-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, took the field, they saw for the first time the version of the pitch clock that will make its way to MLB this year. “Within an inning, we all kind of looked at each other and said we’d seen enough,” recalled Morgan Sword, MLB’s executive vice president of baseball operations. They told each other: “We need this in the big leagues.”

LONDON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Buyout financier Ares Management Corp (ARES.N) has been offering funds to support a takeover of Manchester United (MANU.N), three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. It is the latest U.S. asset manager to seek a financing role in the battle for the English soccer club. It was unclear whether Ares has been looking to finance bids for Manchester United through that fund, which has already invested in Spain's Atletico de Madrid soccer club and Inter Miami CF, or another vehicle. Last Friday, Manchester United received indicative offers from bidders including chemicals firm INEOS, led by long-time fan Jim Ratcliffe, and Qatari Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani. INEOS wants to fund an offer without external financing, but could consider bringing in a minority equity partner, one source said.
Chelsea shrugs off cost-of-living crisis
  + stars: | 2023-02-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Feb 1 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The cost-of-living crisis has yet to reach soccer players. Chelsea Football Club, owned by a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly, spent a record 330 million euros in the January player transfer window, according to Transfermarkt. It brings total spending on footballers since the Los Angeles Dodgers owner acquired the club last May to over 600 million euros. It also brings total spending by Premier League clubs this season to a record 2.8 billion pounds, beating the 1.86 billion pounds spent in the 2017/18 season. The Boehly-led consortium bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for 2.5 billion pounds, equivalent to a toppy 5.7 times trailing sales.
The Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday released Trevor Bauer from their 40-man roster for the 2023 season, ending the team’s relationship with the star pitcher after he was suspended for 194 games under baseball’s policy on domestic violence and sexual assault. “Two extensive reviews of all the available evidence in this case – one by Commissioner Manfred and another by a neutral arbitrator – concluded that Mr. Bauer’s actions warranted the longest ever active player suspension in our sport for violations of this policy,” the Dodgers said Friday night in a statement posted on Twitter.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have until Friday to decide whether or not to add pitcher Trevor Bauer back to their 40-man roster after his MLB-record 194-game suspension under baseball’s policy on domestic violence and sexual assault. It’s the kind of situation that has often caused sports teams to cut ties with an athlete. And yet the Dodgers have unusual incentives to keep Bauer. Chief among them is the idea that they could be on the hook for paying Bauer to pitch for a competitor willing to take a chance on him.
Other world leaders who died in 2022 include former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who died in August. The final days of 2022 saw the loss of some exceptionally notable figures, including Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Here is a roll call of some influential figures who died in 2022 (cause of death cited for younger people, if available):___JANUARY___Dan Reeves, 77. A Cuban-born artist whose radiant color palette and geometric paintings were overlooked for decades before the art world took notice. A prolific character actor best known for playing villains and tough guys in “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Ocean’s Eleven” and other films.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will soon face a decision about whether to carry Trevor Bauer on their 2023 roster—and they’ll have to make it without knowing the full details that Major League Baseball and an arbitrator gathered to determine punishment for the star pitcher under baseball’s policy on domestic violence and sexual assault. The Dodgers must decide what to do about Bauer by Jan. 6, following a ruling on Thursday by arbitrator Martin Scheinman. The arbitrator reduced Bauer’s suspension under the domestic violence policy from the 324-game penalty issued by the league to 194 games. Bauer is immediately eligible to return to the field, and the Dodgers will be on the hook to pay Bauer around $22.5 million in salary next season no matter what.
Trevor Bauer was reinstated Thursday by Major League Baseball’s independent arbitrator, allowing the pitcher to resume his career at the start of the 2023 season. Bauer named the woman and one of her attorneys, Niranjan Fred Thiagarajah, as defendants in the lawsuit. After winning his first Cy Young with the Cincinnati Reds in 2020, Bauer agreed to join his hometown Dodgers. Bauer was placed on administrative leave on July 2, 2021, under the domestic violence policy, a leave extended 13 times. None of the players previously disciplined under the policy appear to have challenged the penalty before an arbitrator.
A Major League Baseball arbitrator validated a 194-game suspension for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer under the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy, paring back a 324-game penalty the league had issued and making Bauer eligible to return to baseball immediately. Major League Baseball had handed down the two-year suspension for Bauer in late April, following an investigation that began after a California woman accused Bauer of sexually assaulting her, and which later expanded to include other accusations. Bauer has not pitched in a game since June 28, 2021, shortly before that claim against him emerged, but was on paid leave during the league investigation.
Former Major League Baseball player T.J. House came out as gay and announced his engagement to his partner, Ryan Neitzel, in an emotional social media post Thursday. He said he felt like he could not be himself around many people, because of conversations he heard from others and in church. “It’s hard listening to people talk about you without them knowing that the words they are saying are directed at you,” he said. “This is a great day for the league and baseball,” Bean, who is now the league’s senior vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion, told Outsports. It allows Ryan Neitzel and I to come together and create something beautiful.

LOS ANGELES — Former Los Angeles Dodgers player Yasiel Puig will plead guilty to lying to federal investigators who were probing an illegal sports gambling operation, prosecutors in Southern California said Monday. Puig will also pay a fine of at least $55,000, the prosecutors’ office said. Puig was charged and a plea agreement was filed Aug. 29, but the case was unsealed Monday, according to court records. Any candidate who receives votes on 75% of the ballots cast by the 16-member Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee on Dec. 4 will earn election to the Hall of Fame in 2023. The committee, which focuses on the period from 1980 to the present day, considers retired Major League Baseball players who are no longer eligible for election by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA). The other candidates on the Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot are Albert Belle, Don Mattingly, Fred McGriff, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling.
CNN —Dusty Baker was sitting in the dugout, looking down and making a note when his coaching and support staff spontaneously mobbed him, chanting his name, as the Houston Astros secured victory in the World Series on Saturday. “I mean, I got 2,000 wins and all they talk about is I haven’t won the World Series yet, you know?” he said before the game, according to MLB.com. David J. Phillip/APWith this victory, Baker became the third Black manager to win the World Series after Dave Roberts and Cito Gaston. Fans hold up a sign for Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker during Game 6. Before coaching, Baker enjoyed a successful playing career, winning the World Series in 1981 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his 40 years in between titles is the most between any two consecutive World Series won as a player or manager, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Pena becomes the third rookie to be named World Series MVP joining Florida Marlins Livan Hernandez in 1997 and Larry Sherry with the 1959 Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a spectacular postseason performance from the 25-year-old Dominican, who delivered defensively and at the plate, registering at least one hit in each of the six World Series games. Pena, who was also named the American League championship series most valuable player, added another line in the record books in Game Five when he became the first rookie shortstop to hit a home run in the World Series.
No nerves for Astros' McCullers ahead of World Series return
  + stars: | 2022-10-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Oct 30 (Reuters) - Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. will make his long-awaited return to the World Series stage after missing last year's Fall Classic with a forearm injury that left him in an even more stressful role as a spectator. "There's always more nerves when you're watching, especially from the dugout," McCullers told reporters on Saturday after the Astros beat the Phillies 5-2. "I think about some of the big games we've played in this park and the World Series, things like that. It's always way more, I'm always way more nervous in the dugout than when I'm outside of it." I think it's when you get to experience the most raw and real atmospheres in all the game," said McCullers.
CNN —The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Houston Astros in dramatic fashion Friday night to take Game 1 of the World Series 6-5 in extras. “The way we fought back in that game after being down 5-0, that is a Phillies win right there,” Realmuto said. Verlander, a likely future hall of famer, remains winless as a starter in the World Series in his stellar career. The Astros’ only previous World Series win came when they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017. A Phillies series win would give the franchise its third World Series title, with its last coming back in 2008.
