EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) — Star Memphis basketball recruit Mikey Williams pleaded guilty to one felony charge in a gun case on Thursday, and one of his attorneys said he does not expect the 19-year-old to face jail time. In a deal with prosecutors, Williams pleaded guilty to one felony count of making a criminal threat and to a special allegation of using a firearm during the threat, attorney Randy M. Grossman said. Although a judge would have the discretion to sentence Williams to a year in jail, “no custody is contemplated,” the attorney said. “Nobody was injured in this case, nobody testified that anybody saw Mikey actually fire the gun and he didn’t admit he was the one who fired the gun,” Grossman said. “He admitted responsibility and pleaded guilty.

The stock market is poised to jump 5% in December to test record highs, according to Fundstrat's Tom Lee. But it won't be a straight line higher, and the upcoming jobs and inflation reports could spark a temporary sell-off. AdvertisementThe stock market is poised to "zig-zag" towards record highs in December, with the S&P 500 rising 5% to 4,800, according to a Monday note from Fundstrat's Tom Lee. October personal consumption expenditures price data, set to be released on Thursday, should be "soft" and help drive stocks initially higher, according to Lee. But any stock market declines on the November jobs and inflation reports will likely be short-lived and Lee recommends investors buy the dip.

Finnish mixed-reality startup Varjo on Monday launched its latest headset, the XR-4, a product it hopes to sell to large enterprise firms. The headset, which starts at a price of $3,990, is similar to those from Meta , Microsoft and Apple . Unlike consumer offerings from companies such as Meta, Varjo's headset is intended for enterprise use cases. For example, a pilot working for a major defense contractor could use it to train in a virtual reality simulation. The XR-4 headset has two 4K displays and a 50% wider field of view compared with previous-generation devices.

You read that right: amid a commercial real estate market across U.S. downtowns being described in apocalyptic terms, CoStar sees a shortage on the horizon, with one key caveat for top companies to bear in mind. CoStar's call of an upcoming office space shortage is predicated on a look at the current data on leasing and construction activity compared to recent market history. They have attracted over 175 million square feet of net new occupancy since the beginning of 2020, an average of 12.7 million square feet per quarter. "Modern, premium office space remains in demand, just as it has historically, even during difficult economic times," said Phil Mobley, national director of office analytics at CoStar Group. Less than 30 million square feet has broken ground in 2023, making this year the lowest for construction starts since 2011.

CNN —An innovative experiment flying aboard NASA’s Psyche mission just hit its first major milestone by successfully carrying out the most distant demonstration of laser communications. The tech demo was designed to be the US space agency’s most distant experiment of high-bandwidth laser communications, testing the sending and receiving of data to and from Earth using an invisible near-infrared laser. NASA/JPL-CaltechIt’s not the first time laser communications have been tested in space. The first test of two-way laser communication occurred in December 2021 when NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration launched and went into orbit about 22,000 miles (35,406 kilometers) from Earth. And the Artemis II spacecraft will use laser communications to return high-definition video of a crewed journey around the moon.

For former President Donald Trump, all political signs point to a rematch with President Joe Biden, who defeated Trump in 2020 and increasingly has targeted Trump in his campaign ads. "A, people have less access to capital and less purchasing power because interest rates are so high. People don't want to leave their lower interest rates to enter into a higher interest rate mortgage." This is a strategy that California-based real estate investor Mike Zuber refers to as " learning your buy box ." To pick your buy box, spend time walking through different neighborhoods, going to open houses, and looking at rental listings. He had a major advantage in that he could make all-cash offers, he noted, but anyone can use the "buy box" strategy to find deals right now when there are less buyers.

The technological feat, using NASA's Psyche probe, broke new ground for deep space communications. AdvertisementNASA has achieved a world-first after sending a laser-beamed message to Earth from nearly 10 million miles away within 50 seconds. While the space agency has long been able to communicate with spacecraft using radio waves, it had never before been able to send information using lasers from that far into space. The feat, achieved using NASA's Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment on board the Psyche spacecraft, could someday allow humans to stream video calls on Mars. The spacecraft then beamed back information using its laser.

The fate of OpenAI hangs in the balance

That has only reinforced the impression that OpenAI’s boardroom drama could take an unexpected turn at any moment. First came the board’s sudden promotion of OpenAI’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, as Altman’s replacement on Friday — made in the same breath as Altman’s firing. Whether Altman is working for Microsoft or OpenAI won’t change the ultimate result, Nadella argued to Swisher, which is that Microsoft benefits from his work. Much is still unclear about the board’s exact reasons for firing Altman. OpenAI’s newest interim CEO, Emmett Shear, has denied that the firing was due to any “specific” disagreement on AI safety.

Every year, researchers in economics are awarded the Nobel Prize, alongside a hefty sum in winnings. All you have to do is bag a Nobel Prize. Franco Modigliani, an MIT professor who nabbed the Nobel in economics in 1985 , got about $225,000 in winnings. But, ultimately, he wanted to spend his winnings according to his own research on people's saving and spending habits. Fusion could have an important advantage over today's nuclear fission plants that split atoms, as it does not produce long-lasting radioactive waste. The former secretary of state will announce his plan to lay out the strategy - which foresees commercialization within years, not decades - on Monday on a tour of fusion company Commonwealth Fusion Systems near Boston. "I will have much more to say on the United States’ vision for international partnerships for an inclusive fusion energy future at COP28," Kerry said in a statement. Some critics say fusion will be too expensive and take too long to develop to help in the fight against climate change in the foreseeable future. In 2023, international fusion companies have garnered about $1.4 billion in investments for a total of about $6.21 billion in mostly private money, the Fusion Industry Association said, down from about $2.83 billion in new investment last year.

She claimed that her controversial Jewish space laser comments were "sarcastic." AdvertisementRep. Marjorie Taylor Greene addressed her controversial comments about Jewish space lasers and said that she is not antisemitic because her "Savior," Jesus, was a Jewish carpenter. Greene made a widely ridiculed claim in 2018 that a Jewish-financed space laser had caused the worst wildfires in California's history. "My Savior is a Jewish carpenter who died on the cross for my sins, and I have no antisemitic sentiments whatsoever." She also said that she has donated to the Temple Institute in Israel, an organization that aims to rebuild the Jewish temple on the Temple Mount and reinstate animal sacrificial worship.
