Former President Donald Trump won't have his day in court in October a Georgia judge ruled Thursday, saying the high-profile defendant could sever his case from two co-defendants who want to move more quickly. But the flurry of paperwork could delay the trials, aiding Trump's efforts to push off any resolution until after the 2024 elections. On Monday, Meadows' attorneys asked Jones to stay his own ruling pending an appeal in a federal appellate court. They argued that without a stay, Meadows could be "irreparably injured" as his prosecution barrels ahead in Fulton County Superior Court. The prosecutor, on Tuesday, urged Jones to deny the motion for a stay, arguing that Meadows has not shown he is likely to prevail in an appeal. Meadows' arguments attempt to "talk around" the federal judge's reasoning and fail to cite "any pertinent public interest weighing in his favor," the DA wrote.

Two of the people charged have filed speedy trial demands, and Judge Scott McAfee set their trial for Oct. 23. That could lead to multiple trials in the high-profile case happening simultaneously, creating security issues and “unavoidable burdens” on witnesses and victims, prosecutors argued. Five of the defendants are seeking to move their cases to federal court, and lawyers for Trump have said he may do the same. The full 25-page report of the special grand jury, which finished its investigative work last winter, was released Friday morning. However, in addition to the three senators, the special grand jury also had recommended indictments be issued against 18 other people who were ultimately not charged by the regular grand jury last month, in addition to the people who did end up being indicted. Both Perdue and Loeffler, who were sitting senators at the time of the 2020 election, were defeated in early 2021 runoff elections by Democrats, Sens. Graham, a staunch Trump ally, is known to have called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger after the November 2020 election to ask about absentee ballots in that contest. Trump and his co-defendants were indicted by a regular grand jury in Fulton County Superior Court last month on charges alleging a broad-ranging election conspiracy.
