The U.S.-Brazil Partnership for Workers' Rights will be bilateral to start, but other countries and organizations will be encouraged to join, senior Biden administration officials said, without naming other possible participants. Biden and Lula will make an announcement when they have their second in-person meeting on Wednesday while in New York for the annual high-level United Nations General Assembly. But the official added that it was Brazil's sovereign right to engage in relationships with China and other countries.

WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - When the CEO gets a 40% raise, what do the workers deserve? UAW President Shawn Fain initially asked for a 40% increase in worker's pay over the next four years - a figure based off an approximately 40% increase in CEO pay at the companies over the last four years at a time of stable profits for two of the three automakers. CEO pay and benefits have skyrocketed in recent decades, but worker pay has not kept pace. As the strikes began last week, Biden echoed Fain, saying automakers should offer more of the share of their profits to workers. Attempts to address rising CEO pay in decades past have not had the intended effect, said Rosanna Landis Weaver, director of wage justice and CEO pay at As You Sow, a non-profit shareholder advocacy group.

TAIPEI, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Tesla supplier Hota Industrial Mfg. Co (1536.TW) will invest $99 million to build its first plant outside of Asia in the U.S. state of New Mexico, the Taiwanese company said on Wednesday, citing greater emphasis on regional production in supply chains. Hota, which makes gears and other auto components primarily in Taiwan, said it would begin construction on the factory in Santa Teresa, near the U.S. border with Mexico, early next year and mass production in 2025. Hota is a key supplier to Tesla (TSLA.O), GM (GM.N) and Ford (F.N). James Huang, chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, said EVs would be an important focus for bilateral trade and especially in New Mexico.

Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, were threatening to go on strike at all three of Ford's plants in the country if a deal was not reached by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday (0359 GMT on Wednesday). "We leveraged our union’s most powerful weapon: the right to strike," Unifor said of the tentative deal in a statement. The UAW has said it will announce strikes against more U.S. plants on Friday if no serious progress is made in talks with automakers.
