CNN —Former President Donald Trump, who paved the way for the undoing of federal abortion rights protections, said that some Republicans “speak very inarticulately” about the issue and have pursued “terrible” state-level restrictions that could alienate much of the country. Trump also warned Republicans that the party would lose voters by advancing abortion restrictions without exceptions for cases of rape, incest or risks to the mother’s life. “Other than certain parts of the country, you can’t – you’re not going to win on this issue,” he said. Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence, has advocated a federal abortion ban after 15 weeks. Trump said he believed it was “probably better” to leave abortion restrictions up to the states instead of trying to pass federal legislation on the issue.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Some of Donald Trump 's top rivals for the Republican presidential nomination will address a gathering of influential Iowa evangelical Christians on Saturday night, hoping to woo them away from the former president at an event he is skipping. How could those who claim to esteem traditional moral values—monogamy chief among them—support a profane libertine like Mr. Trump? For years, the Office of the Inspector General has reviewed PEPFAR’s practices and has never discovered misappropriation of funds for abortion. Over the last 20 years, this ambitious program has saved 25 million lives in 55 countries, most of which are in Africa. PEPFAR also has fortified education systems, helping girls stay in primary school, and stimulated economic growth in recipient countries. Faith leaders from the United States and around the world, including those who oppose abortion, have recently written letters calling for reauthorization. Despite the impressive successes of PEPFAR, we still have a way to go in the fight against AIDS.

The center conducted the survey among its American Trends Panel members between March 27 and April 2. The survey included responses from “Americans of all religious backgrounds,” including Buddhists, Jews and Muslims, the center said. Women – 41% – were also more likely than men – 27% – to report recently feeling the presence of a dead relative, the survey found.
