The price of the Solana token jumped Wednesday amid an ongoing rally in altcoins and bullish remarks on the token from famed tech investor Cathie Wood. It has nearly tripled in price in the past month. "Ether was faster and cheaper than bitcoin [back] in the day – that's how we got ether. Activity on Solana has been growing all year, particularly in liquid staking protocols like Jito, according to data provider Kaiko. Solana is up about 510% this year and has been one of the best performing cryptocurrencies of 2023.

Bitcoin investors are eagerly waiting for regulators to approve the first U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund, which could be significant for cryptocurrency investors, experts say. Last week, the price of bitcoin notched an 18-month high, climbing to $37,970, after BlackRock took first steps toward an ether ETF. At least nine asset management firms — including BlackRock, WisdomTree, Valkyrie and others — are waiting for Securities and Exchange Commission approval to issue a spot bitcoin ETF. Currently, U.S. investors can buy bitcoin futures ETFs, which own bitcoin futures contracts, or agreements to buy or sell the asset later for an agreed-upon price. The long-awaited bitcoin spot ETF would invest in the digital asset directly.

Altcoins were in rally mode this week after lagging bitcoin in its recent climb to new 2023 highs. Bitcoin and ether have been separate from this trend recently, with more investors appearing to treat them as a safety trade compared to smaller, riskier altcoins. "Historically we've seen bitcoin rally, then Ethereum, then alts, and that pattern seems to be repeating as this bull market heats up," he said. "We see as a more likely scenario existing capital shifting from existing bitcoin products such as the Grayscale bitcoin trust, bitcoin futures ETFs and publicly listed bitcoin mining companies, into the newly-approved spot bitcoin ETFs," he said. He also said that bitcoin ETFs already exist in Canada and Europe but haven't garnered much interest from investors since their inception.

The big storyCrypto comebackSOPA Images / GettyThe ink is barely dry on Sam Bankman-Fried's conviction, and bitcoin is already rising like a fresh divorcee. It marked the highest price for the cryptocurrency since early May 2022, adding to what has quietly been a strong year for bitcoin, writes Insider's Phil Rosen. After a dreadful 2022 culminating in the downfall of FTX and the aforementioned SBF, bitcoin has been on the up. While there was plenty of fallout from FTX's bankruptcy, the price of bitcoin has steadily climbed this year. The Insider Today team: Dan DeFrancesco, senior editor and anchor, in New York City.

BlackRock registered the iShares Ethereum Trust as a Delaware statutory trust on Thursday. Earlier this year, BlackRock registered a bitcoin trust in the same manner and a week later filed an application with the SEC to launch a spot bitcoin ETF. BlackRock declined to comment on the trust's creation or on any plans for an ETF filing. To date, roughly a dozen ETF providers have filed to create spot bitcoin ETFs, or convert existing products into spot ETFs, helping fuel the recent rally in the cryptocurrency. Several other ETF providers that have applied for spot bitcoin ETFs also have sought SEC approval for spot ether ETFs, including Ark Investment Management, Invesco and VanEck.

Asset management giant BlackRock appeared to take the first steps toward an ether ETF on Thursday, sparking a rally in the cryptocurrency. A similar notice for the iShares Bitcoin Trust came one week before BlackRock's filing for a bitcoin ETF in June. The Securities and Exchange Commission has still not approved a bitcoin ETF. The regulator has long opposed such a fund and blocked Grayscale's attempt to convert its bitcoin trust product into an ETF, though a court overruled that decision in August. If the SEC does allow bitcoin ETFs, then ether funds would likely be next in line.

When cryptocurrencies collapsed and a number of companies failed last year, Congress considered multiple approaches for how to regulate the industry in the future. Ironically, the failure of Bankman-Fried's FTX and his subsequent arrest late last year may have contributed to the momentum for regulation stalling out. Before FTX imploded, Bankman-Fried spent millions of dollars — illegally taken from his customers it turns out — to influence the discussion around cryptocurrency regulation in Washington and push for action. “Moreover, almost everything the crypto industry does is clearly covered by existing securities and commodities laws that every other law-abiding financial firm in the country follow," he said. Bartlett Collins Naylor, a financial policy advocate for Public Citizen's Congress Watch said “laws on fraud and securities are currently sound.”__Hussein reported from Lewiston, Maine

Bitcoin leaps to 2023 high on ETF bets

Bitcoin rose more than 6% to $35,198, its highest since May 2022. It had surged 10% on Monday in its best session for almost a year and its price has doubled in 2023. Crypto-linked shares such as Coinbase Global (COIN.O) or bitcoin owner MicroStrategy (MSTR.O) rose in after-hours trade. An exchange-traded fund (ETF) owning bitcoin on behalf of fund investors is seen as a driver of demand because it would allow anyone reluctant to trade crypto markets a means of buying exposure to bitcoin through the stockmarket. So the ETF would make a large audience and increase liquidity," said Steen Jakobsen, CIO at Saxo.

Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, hit an 18-month high on Tuesday, extending Monday's 10% surge, on speculation over the likely approval of a spot bitcoin ETF that was fueled by BlackRock's iShares ETF listing on the website of clearing house DTCC. Meanwhile, other bitcoin-linked ETFs, like the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF that tracks bitcoin futures, and Valkyrie Bitcoin Miners ETF (WGMI.O), gained more than 9% each. The Valkyrie Bitcoin and Ether Strategy ETF (BTF.O) was up 9.4%, leading gains among recently launched funds that track Ether futures.

The price of bitcoin breached the $34,000 level to hit its highest since May last year, bolstered by positive sentiment about a bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Ether , the second-biggest digital coin, surged to its highest since August, according to Coin Metrics data. Anticipation of a bitcoin ETF grew after the court ruled in favor of crypto-focused asset manager Grayscale over the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in its bid to turn its huge Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) bitcoin fund into an ETF. A bitcoin ETF would give investors a way to gain exposure to bitcoin's price movements without owning the cryptocurrency directly. Bitcoin is considered a highly volatile asset, and its price fluctuations are unpredictable.

Bitcoin extended its weekly gains on Friday, briefly topping $30,000 at one point for the second time this week, as confidence a spot bitcoin ETF will soon be greenlit grew and crypto investors continued weighing uncertainty in the U.S. and abroad. The price of the flagship cryptocurrency was recently up nearly 3% on Friday at $29,602.80, according to Coin Metrics. It's on pace for a 11% weekly gain, its best since June 23 when it added 17%. Higher yields historically have had a negative effect on bitcoin, but the crypto asset is benefiting from a key catalyst investors have been watching all year: the approval of what would be the first spot bitcoin ETF in the U.S. Earlier this week, JPMorgan said the Securities and Exchange Commission is likely to approve an ETF in the next few months.

Regulating crypto has become more urgent for regulators after the collapse of crypto exchange FTX and with huge volatility in bitcoin prices. "Even with the implementation of MiCA, retail investors must be aware that there will be no such thing as a ‘safe’ cryptoasset," the EU watchdog said in a statement. Full protections may not be available in EU states that grant an 18-month transitional period for crypto firms to operate without an EU licence, meaning customers may not be covered until July 2026. A significant number of crypto firms would probably continue to offer their services under the transitional terms until mid-2026, ESMA said. Crypto firms from non-EU countries will be allowed to provide services to customers in the bloc that have specifically requested them, and even then only on a "strictly limited" basis.
