DETROIT – General Motors' long-time head of manufacturing is retiring, and the company has hired a former Tesla and Google executive to fill his shoes. The Detroit automaker said on Tuesday that Gerald Johnson, executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability, will pass the baton to Jens Peter "JP" Clausen, a former executive with Tesla, Lego and, most recently, Google. Johnson's departure isn't unexpected after a 44-year tenure with the automaker, however GM also announced another more surprising departure on Tuesday: that of Mike Abbott, executive vice president of software and services. Baris Cetinok, current vice president of product in software and services, has been named Abbott's interim replacement while a search is conducted. The company's board members include former Tesla President of Global Sales and Service Jon McNeill.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baker Mayfield is staying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after agreeing to a three-year contract worth up to $115 million, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement, which includes $50 million guaranteed, had not been finalized. The Tampa Bay Times reported Mayfield will receive $30 million in 2024 and $30 million in 2025, with $20 million guaranteed in the second year of the deal. Mayfield agreed to terms two days after Tampa Bay finalized a two-year, $52 million contract with star receiver Mike Evans, who also passed up an opportunity to test his worth in free agency. The Bucs are also interested in extending the contract of left tackle Tristan Wirfs, who's due to earn a fifth-year option salary of $18.2 million next season.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A large fire followed by multiple explosions at a building in suburban Detroit killed one person and injured a firefighter. Authorities believe canisters containing gas chemicals may have been responsible for the repeated explosions reported by first responders and witnesses. The building housed a distributor for the vaping industry called Goo, and canisters stored inside contained nitrous and butane, said Clinton Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan. Owners and employees are cooperating with investigators, said Clinton Township Police Chief Dina Caringi. Clinton Township officials asked residents to stay away from the site and said it would be fenced off and guarded as cleanup begins.

This, paired with the success of Tesla and overall investor enthusiasm for EV technology, left Toyota looking like a laggard. Thousands of voters cast "uncommitted" ballots on Tuesday, opting to essentially leave their ballots blank rather than vote for Biden or his long-shot primary challenger, Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota. It's largely the result of the "Listen to Michigan" campaign, an effort to get voters to withhold support for Biden until Israel enacts a permanent cease-fire in Gaza. Ahead of the Tuesday primary, officials with the Biden campaign had pointed out that around 20,000 voters have opted to select "uncommitted" in recent presidential primary elections — though the circumstances have varied. "Uncommitted" accounted for less than 2% of the vote in recent competitive primaries, including 19,106 uncommitted voters in 2020, and 21,601 in 2016.
