LONDON, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Chelsea supporters travelling to Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Premier League fixture on Christmas Eve will be offered free transport to and from the game, the London club said on Monday. "The club is aware that transport options are more limited than usual on this date, as it is a Sunday and also Christmas Eve," Chelsea said in a statement. "As a sign of appreciation for fans making this trip, Chelsea Football Club will be offering free travel as a goodwill gesture to anyone who purchases a ticket." The change of date to Christmas Eve was criticised by the club's fans who described it as "totally unacceptable". The Chelsea Supporters' Trust said match-going fans would face issues travelling to Wolves on a holiday weekend.

Millionaire VC Jason Calacanis is catching flak for mocking a woman venting about her 9-5 on TikTok. Users on X, formerly Twitter, said he was punching down and noted he hadn't worked a 9-5 in decades. Some commenters said the woman was unprepared to enter the workforce; others agreed 9-5 jobs leave little room for work-life balance. "I want to be able to talk for this next generation and explain that a 40-hour work week plus commute is not necessary for productivity," she said. Period," one person said on X.AdvertisementAdvertisementMany users agreeing with Brielle expressed their support for a 4-day work week.

In turn, higher rates will dampen interest-sensitive expenditure and likely lead to slower growth in oil consumption in 2024. Services are less energy-intensive but more labour-intensive than manufacturing, so the sector’s inflation rate tends to be more persistent and a better indicator of the overall amount of inflationary pressure within the economy. Most rate traders anticipate the central bank will be forced to keep overnight rates higher for longer to squeeze persistent inflation out of the economy. In the short term, the renewed expansion of the U.S. manufacturing and service sectors is supporting oil consumption and prices. In the medium term, however, the higher-for-longer rates needed to bring inflation back to target will likely depress business activity and slow oil consumption growth in 2024.

But Mr. Trump is no ordinary rival. He is running in the primary as a popular quasi-incumbent, and his four indictments have only further rallied Republican voters behind him and juiced his fund-raising. Leading Republicans have tried and failed to figure out how to challenge Mr. Trump since 2015. For an ambitious Republican politician, attacking Mr. Trump without success means angering his loyal supporters who make up a significant portion of the G.O.P. Still, going so far as to call Mr. Trump a threat to democracy or characterize his run as an effort to stay out of jail is not likely to play well.

Hong Kong CNN —China has concluded its Golden Week holiday on a muted note, with key travel and spending data showing weaker-than-expected recovery in consumption amid a wider economic slump. Before the holiday, the ministry had expected domestic travel to hit 896 million trips, and tourism spending to reach 782.5 billion yuan ($107 billion). According to the National Immigration Administration, on average 1.48 million people crossed the border every day during the Golden Week holiday. Weakness at the box officeChina’s box office hit multi-year lows during the holiday week. A recovery in domestic consumption not related to the Golden Week also fell short of expectations.

New York/Hong Kong CNN —Oil prices surged and US stock futures fell on Sunday night in their first reaction to Israel’s war with Hamas. Although Israel is not a major oil producer, escalating tensions in the oil-rich Middle East spooked investors who have already been selling off oil in recent weeks. But on Sunday night, US oil prices surged 4% higher above $86 a barrel. In the equity markets, US stock futures, which surged Friday on a surprisingly strong American job market report, fell sharply Sunday night. Global investors fear prolonged tensions in the Middle East could hurt the fragile global economic recovery.

Hong Kong CNN —Stocks in Hong Kong suffered their worst day in three months on Tuesday on growing concern about China’s weak housing market and persistently high US interest rates. Real estate stocks were once again among the heaviest losers in Hong Kong. Country Garden, one of the country’s largest property developers, sank 4.4%. Market sentiment was also weighed down by concerns that US interest rates could stay elevated after US Treasury yields hit a 16-year high. Yields on the 10-year US Treasury, which are considered a proxy for US interest rates, reached 4.7% on Monday, the highest since 2007.

China's markets will also be disrupted by Golden Week holidays next week. Ten-year Treasury yields hit another 16-year high at 4.56% on Tuesday before dialling back a bit on Wednesday, with 10-year real yields hitting 14-year peaks at 2.24%. Risk spreads in junk bond and overseas sovereign bond markets are also creeping higher again, with exchange-traded U.S. junk bond funds hitting their lowest since May and Italy's government bond yield premium over Germany widening too. Worrying for many investors this week has been how bond yields have climbed despite weaker economic signals and how stock and bond losses are correlating again. World markets were more mixed, with China's bourses managing some gains ahead of the big holiday week.

That is especially concerning for parents of younger kids and those whose disabilities can make finding child care an extra challenge. However, the Rand Corporation found achievement differences in four-day districts, while initially hard to spot, became apparent over multiple years.

The Pennsylvania jail from which convicted murderer Danilo Cavalcante brazenly escaped, eluding searchers for two weeks, plans to enclose its exercise yards with walls and a roof and make inmates wear brighter uniforms, along with other security improvements. The Chester County jail board unanimously approved plans Wednesday to fully enclose the exercise yards at the facility in Pocopson, southwest of Philadelphia. The redesign plan calls for fully enclosed exercise yards, with 18-foot-high masonry walls to replace fencing, and the removal of shed roofs that could inmates could scale. The design notably blocks overhead sunlight into the yard, save for a small ribbon of windows at the top with secure screening. Cavalcante was charged with escape after his capture, and his next hearing in that case is scheduled for Wednesday.

Cazoo’s debt fix points to bumpy ride

That’s not the fate of shareholders in UK-based and U.S.-listed Cazoo (CZOO.N), which has just announced a brutal debt restructuring. Under the deal announced on Wednesday, bondholders will swap $630 million of convertible notes for $200 million of fresh debt and a large slug of the equity. The debt cut will do little to fix Cazoo’s rickety engine. Although the company had 195 million pounds of cash at the end of June, it burnt through over 50 million pounds in the previous six months. And revenue this year is expected to fall nearly 40%, as customers racked by high interest rates tighten their belts.

Pearson’s pricey CEO will rile shareholders

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Pearson (PSON.L) is baiting shareholders with its choice of new CEO. The 57-year-old will receive 13 million pounds’ worth of cash and restricted shares on top of his normal pay as compensation for leaving Microsoft. Such generosity is questionable considering that in April nearly half of the London-listed company’s shareholders voted against a pay package of more than 8 million pounds for Bird. Despite its greater digital focus, Pearson’s revenue is expected to flatline over the next three years, LSEG forecasts show. The United Auto Workers on Friday began strikes at Detroit carmakers Ford Motor (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Sanders voiced enthusiasm for their biggest demand: moving to a four-day workweek while maintaining five-day pay. UAW members pushed for this policy in the middle of the last century during a prior wave of automation.
