S&P 500 futures were little changed Wednesday night as investors looked to extend November's hot streak. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite climbed about 0.2% and 0.1%, respectively. Tuesday's session brought the biggest gains for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq since April. With November about halfway through, the S&P 500 is up more than 7% for the month, while the Dow has advanced nearly 6%. That's because the recent inflation data can imply the Federal Reserve is done raising interest rates.

Cisco Systems – Shares tumbled nearly 11% after the digital communications company offered worse-than-expected guidance for the current quarter and full year. That pulled attention away from a strong report for the fiscal first quarter, with Cisco beating the consensus forecasts of analysts polled by LSEG on both lines. Maxeon Solar Technologies – Shares slipped 7% after posting a bigger loss than expected in the third quarter. The solar company beat analyst expectations for revenue in the quarter, but issued a weaker-than-anticipated revenue outlook for both the current quarter and full year. While Gambling.com, a review site of gambling services, beat expectations on both lines for the third quarter, it left its full-year expectations unchanged.

Generative AI still mostly experimental, say executives

NEW YORK, Nov 9 (Reuters) - One year after the debut of ChatGPT created a global sensation, leaders of business, government and civil society said at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York that generative AI technology is still mostly in an experimental stage, with limited exceptions. Aguirre cited self-driving cars as an example of a technology struggling to make the transition to full deployment. “I’ve observed many generative AI applications that are in production while other customers are just beginning their journey.”One way generative AI was already being deployed widely, highlighted by speakers across industries, was to write computer code. Gary Marcus, a professor at New York University, said generative AI was error-prone in coding just like in other areas, but that the problem was less of a hindrance in the tech sector because programmers knew how to troubleshoot it. Companies should move slowly and deliberately when integrating the technology into uses where accuracy matters, executives emphasized.

Nov 1 (Reuters) - Splunk (SPLK.O) said on Wednesday it would lay off nearly 7% of its global workforce as the cybersecurity and cloud software company grapples with an uncertain macroeconomic environment. Splunk had 8,000 employees as of Jan. 31, of which nearly 560 are set to be impacted by the layoffs. "The overall market has retracted and we expect the macro environment will continue to be unpredictable for the foreseeable future," said CEO Gary Steele in an email sent to employees, about a month ahead of its quarterly results. The reorganization is unrelated to the deal Cisco Systems (CSCO.O) made in September to acquire Splunk for about $28 billion, Steele added. Cybersecurity firm Splunk , set to be Cisco's largest-ever acquisition, announced Wednesday it would lay off approximately 7% of its global workforce, months ahead of the deal close. Splunk had nearly 8,000 employees as of January, according to its regulatory filings, meaning that around 500 employees will likely lose their jobs. "Within the next 24 hours, each ELT member will communicate with their organization to summarize any changes to their teams," Steele wrote. Shortly after the announcement, Steele and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins discussed the deal on a call with analysts. Companies such as Google and Microsoft have cut thousands of employees, while many venture-backed companies have become so-called "zombie startups."

Advanced Micro Devices announced Tuesday it will acquire Nod.AI, an open-source artificial intelligence software startup, to expand the chipmaker's AI software operations. Nod.AI, or Nod Labs, builds open-source technologies "for future AI systems," according to the startup, and it mainly specializes in reinforcement learning, a type of system that "learns" via trial and error. During the same period, AMD reported a revenue decline of 18% but still beat analysts' estimates for sales and profit. Prior to founding Nod in 2013, Anush Elangovan, the startup's CEO, was part of the first Chromebooks team at Google and a lead engineer at Cisco.
