CNN —Andy Murray has seen a lot during his glittering career, but even he looked confused at what took place during his match against Yannick Hanfmann at the Geneva Open on Monday. The three-time grand slam champion was trailing by a set and two breaks when the umpire stopped play due to an impending storm. High winds had already disrupted the match, with white pollen from the nearby park blowing over and showering the players during the second set. Having already lost the first set 7-5, Murray was irked by the conditions and complained to umpire Greg Allensworth during a change of ends about the decision to keep playing. Yannick Hanfmann had taken a commanding lead over Murray in the match.

The Biden administration will release 1 million barrels of gasoline from reserves held in the Northeast to reduce prices at the pump ahead of the Fourth of July holiday and summer driving season. Rising energy prices stirred speculation in April that the Biden administration might tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in Texas and Louisiana ahead of the November presidential election. Though gasoline prices have come down over the past month, broader inflation has remained stubborn, irking consumers. The barrels will be sold from storage sites in New Jersey and Maine that are part of the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve, which was established after Superstorm Sandy knocked out refineries in 2012. The Biden administration released 180 million barrels from the SPR in 2022 as energy prices spiked in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Companies that manufacture small, quickly deployable natural gas turbines and generators are poised to benefit as surging electricity demand from data centers creates major delays in adding new capacity to the power grid, according to Morgan Stanley. "We believe this greater appreciation for the current grid connectivity challenges will heighten investor interest in/focus on emerging 'time to power' solutions," the analysts told clients. Power projects waiting for connection to the Lone Star state's grid have surged from 17 gigawatts to about 40 gigawatts in less than two years, according to the analysts. There is also an extensive wait time for diesel-powered, backup generators for new data center projects, according to Morgan Stanley. Companies such as Cummins and Caterpillar are also poised to benefit because they manufacture natural gas-powered generators that provide backup power onsite, according to Morgan Stanley.

Who Is President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran?
  + stars: | 2024-05-19 | by ( Emma Bubola | More About Emma Bubola | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Ebrahim Raisi, 63, a hard-line religious cleric, was elected president of Iran in 2021. In his tenure as president, he has overseen a strategy to expand his country’s regional influence — backing militant proxies across the Middle East, expediting the country’s nuclear program and bringing the country to the brink of war with Israel. But in the same period, Iran experienced its largest antigovernment protests in decades and a severe economic downturn driven by international sanctions and high unemployment. Mr. Raisi has been seen as the likely successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as supreme leader, the highest political and religious position in the Islamic republic. Mr. Raisi, born in the eastern city of Mashhad in 1960 to a devoutly religious family, was swept up in the fervor of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, which toppled the country’s monarchy in 1979.

A Would-be Assassin Stirs Europe’s Violent Ghosts
  + stars: | 2024-05-18 | by ( Roger Cohen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Dmitri A. Medvedev, the former Russian president and regular forecaster of a third World War, had no hesitation in comparing the would-be assassin of Prime Minister Robert Fico of Slovakia to the young man who ignited World War I. Europe, he suggested, was once more on the brink. It was on many levels a wild association to make. The Europe of empires that unraveled between 1914 and 1918 is long gone, as is the Europe that replaced it and produced Auschwitz. In their place the painstakingly constructed European Union of 27 members, including Slovakia, has been put in place with the overriding goal of making war impossible on a long-ravaged continent. Yet, with elections to the European Parliament just three weeks way, ominous indications of brewing violence go well beyond the shooting of Mr. Fico, whose condition remains serious.

Republican Mark Christie opposed the rule, dismissing it as a gift to solar and wind power operators. Many power companies and Republican-led states don't want to spend money on new transmission lines or upgrades for renewable energy, creating conflicts with Democratic states that have ambitious clean-energy goals. The rule is intended to streamline how power lines are sited and how costs are shared between states. It could accelerate construction of new transmission lines for wind, solar and other renewable power and add huge amounts of clean energy to the grid. The new rule "will improve regional transmission planning, break down barriers to grid buildout and support the delivery of more affordable and reliable power,″ Zaidi said.

How Mark Zuckerberg turned against the news
  + stars: | 2024-05-13 | by ( Kali Hays | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +13 min
Mark Zuckerberg held regular discussions in 2017 and early 2018 about how to make news on Facebook more trustworthy and reliable. "Giving people a voice is not enough without having people dedicated to uncovering new information and analyzing it," Zuckerberg wrote. Zuckerberg also considered a permanent subsidy through his philanthropy the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Murdoch and Zuckerberg's yearslong relationship, while never outright friendly, turned "tense, very tense," when Australia passed the NMBC, a person who worked with Zuckerberg said. When Canada passed a law similar to Australia's last year, Meta simply and decisively turned off news content on Facebook and Instagram.

Putin orders tactical nuclear weapon drills to deter the West

Russia's defense ministry said it would hold military drills including practice for the preparation and deployment for use of non-strategic nuclear weapons. "During the exercise, a set of measures will be carried out to practice the issues of preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons," the ministry said. Russia and the United States are by far the world's biggest nuclear powers, holding more than 10,600 of the world's 12,100 nuclear warheads. No power has used nuclear weapons in war since the United States unleashed the first atomic bomb attacks on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Major nuclear powers routinely check their nuclear weapons but very rarely publicly link such exercises to specific perceived threats in the way that Russia has.

The Fed and economic policy were top of mind this week given the central bank's Wednesday decision to yet again leave interest rates unchanged , as it has since last summer. This week included the conclusion of April's trading month, which marked the first down month of the year for all three major market averages. Indeed, some recent earnings reports have raised doubts about the economy, with brands from McDonald's and Starbucks evidencing signs of strain among consumers. While no new inflation numbers are scheduled for release next week, investors will see reports on March wholesale inventories, March consumer credit and May consumer sentiment from the University of Michigan.
