Kristofer Baxter leads a team of about 20 UI engineers at Citadel, a $57 billion hedge fund. I started my career at a golf tee-time reservation company, then worked in roles at Netlflix, LinkedIn, and Google. But it's really important to be quick. We work really closely with front-office partners and investment professionals so we know what to build. The really important thing there is that you can't be afraid of scale, or even failure.

There's high demand for international summer travel and likely not enough seats to satisfy it. Americans have their eyes set on international travel — and Europe especially. If you want to fly to Europe this summer, you're likely going to spend $300 more than you would have before the pandemic. Last year, it was flights within the US that had their most expensive summer in years, averaging $376 round trip. "Next summer for international will be less expensive than this summer and probably start returning to some level of normalcy similar to what happened with domestic," Berg said.
Booking a domestic flight 3 to 4 months in advance helps travelers find the best price. Prices for US domestic flights have finally cooled off after a very expensive 2022. Other than domestic flights, only flights to South America and the Antilles are cheaper than they were last year. Finding the best deal for summer travel is all about timing. Domestic mid-week flights — Wednesday especially — are on average $56 cheaper year-round, $60 cheaper over the summer, and up to $100 cheaper during holidays.

A story about training non-tech workers that has nothing to do with ChatGPT? Man Group, a $144 billion investment firm, has a popular training program to get non-tech workers up to speed on coding and data-science. Programs like <develop>, along with the rise of ChatGPT, speak to a wider trend across Wall Street of enabling employees to build their own tools despite not having a background in tech. Empowering people to build their own tools and apps to streamline their work seems great on paper. Read more about how Man Group teaches non-tech workers programming skills that help them save time.
Man Group's <develop> program is growing in popularity among non-tech workers. That's the thinking behind Man Group's technology upskilling program, <develop>, which has served as the $144 billion investment firm's answer to a tight tech-labor market. "The level of demand for software engineers outstripped the number of qualified engineers entering the workforce each year," Lara Carty, Man Group's chief people officer, told Insider. It's also spanned a variety of backgrounds, from workers on the trading desk to communications and public-relations employees, Carty said. There's classroom-based learning led by about a dozen of Man Group's top engineers with a mentorship aspect.
I recently tried to eat at McDonald's as a person with celiac disease. McDonald's doesn't claim any of its food as gluten-free so I was very limited in what I could order. McDonald's is one of the largest chain restaurants in the US, with over 13,000 locations across the country. Eating out with celiac is not easy, but restaurant chains often provide a safe haven, given their strict food preparation protocols and allergen lists stamped everywhere. In Italy, for example, McDonald's sells an uninspiring but safe gluten-free burger that is cooked wrapped in plastic to avoid cross-contamination.

Much like an airline desk at any airport, it will also give passengers the option to book travel, according to Emirates. Emirates' robot check-in assistant is called Sara and is equipped to match faces with scanned passports and give passengers instructions.

TSA's new technology snaps a real-time picture of a passenger and matches it with their scanned ID. A new facial recognition technology is automatically matching passengers' real-time pictures to their IDs at Baltimore-Washington International/Thurgood Marshall Airport. The Transportation Security Administration has started using 36 new credential authentication technology units at the airport, according to a recent press release. If someone doesn't want their picture taken, they can proceed with a standard ID check with a TSA officer, a TSA spokesperson previously told Insider. Air France and KLM are the latest airlines to join in on the "basic" business class trend: offering passengers a cheaper business class ticket, without some of the perks usually associated with the class. When American Airlines hired her in 1973, Bonnie Tiburzi was the only woman among 214 new hires. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Bonnie Tiburzi, the first woman to fly with American Airlines as a pilot in 1973. A Boeing 727 jet in American Airlines livery similar to the one Tiburzi would have operated. Look like a female pilotWhen Tiburzi first started working for American Airlines, there was no uniform for female pilots. After 26 years with American Airlines, I retired in 1999.
The Biden administration's infrastructure legislation encouraged spending in the construction sector, spurring demand for the machinery maker's excavators, bulldozers and trucks. Caterpillar's construction division recorded a 10% rise in total sales on the back of solid demand in North America which increased 33% year-over-year. Cost control measures that led the company to raise prices across its machinery lines over the past two years have buoyed top-line growth. Healthy demand, coupled with strong pricing, helped Caterpillar navigate higher material and freight costs amid ongoing supply challenges. Caterpillar's sales and revenue for the quarter through March 31 rose to $15.9 billion from $13.6 billion a year ago.

Why it's on the market: SMB lenders saw valuations skyrocket during the pandemic years fueled by cash-strapped businesses struggling to secure loans amid tightening lending requirements. "These sorts of businesses almost certainly got way over their skis on valuation," a partner at a California-based venture firm, told Insider. SMB lenders are potential acqui-hires or acquisition targets unless they can raise more capital, according to one New York-based partner at a large venture firm. In November 2022, Pipe announced its three cofounders would step down and start the search for a "veteran" CEO. Both experts expect to see consolidation throughout the segment, with larger consumer and SMB lenders like Ramp and Brex as potential buyers.
