World Bee Day 2023: 6 surprising things about bees
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
Unfortunately, many bee species are under threat as a result of changes in land use, pesticides, intensive agriculture and climate change — but there are steps you can take to help them thrive. In honor of World Bee Day on May 20, here are six surprising things you might not know about nature’s hardest-working pollinators. “It marks the first report of honey bees of any species foraging for materials that are not derived from plants or water-based fluids. It is also the first clear-cut example of honey bees using a tool in nature.”Honeybees also signal an imminent attack by making a chilling warning noise. Bees are seen on a honeycomb cell at the Urban Bee Hive rooftop site in Woolloomooloo, a suburb of Sydney.
This Summer We’re Helping Scientists Track Birds. This data will help scientists understand better how birds are affected by forces like climate change and habitat loss. We’re obviously a little bit biased here, so I’m going to recommend the Merlin Bird ID app. Nearly half of all bird species worldwide are known or suspected to be in decline, and climate change could accelerate this trend. Look up past reports of that species on the eBird Species Map and zoom in on your city.

CNN —If you’re one of the lucky members of the BeyHive who scored tickets to Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” tour this summer, expect one of the more epic nights of your life. Fans have been waiting for this tour since last summer, and it’s finally time to unleash our inner alien superstars. Here’s what “Renaissance” tour-goers need to know before the show hits their hometown (or, before they fly across the world to catch it – the things we do for Beyoncé). Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for ParkwoodThe aesthetic of the “Renaissance” tour, based on the footage fans have captured, is more “Alien Superstar” than “Cuff It”: Think Afrofuturist cyborgs with impeccable style. ), and she lets those in the audience know that a “queen moves at her own pace.” We’ll have to keep waiting on those music videos.

GLASSWORKS, by Olivia Wolfgang-SmithI smashed a bottle while reading Olivia Wolfgang-Smith’s debut novel, “Glassworks.” I had the book in one hand and a container of hair oil in the other, and the bottle slipped, ricocheted off the sink and shattered. “Glassworks” is a panoramic family saga told in four novellas, each peering over the shoulder of the preceding generation. We follow Agnes in 1910; her son, Edward, in 1938; his daughter, Novak, in 1986; and Flip, the daughter of a woman Novak loves, in 2015. The book opens with Agnes Carter, a wealthy donor to a Boston university, who hires Ignace Novak, a naturalist and glassblower, to create scientific models. When Ignace is stung by a honeybee, the pair retrieve its squashed carcass and Agnes starts to draw it.
Opinion: The surprising antidote to burnout

Community feels good. Activism feels good. Cultivating feels good. Sometimes we go out and work in community because we want to alter and renew our sense of what is possible. Last year, author Laura Vanderkam wrote in The New York Times that quitting is not the answer to burnout.
Journal Editorial Report: The state may force everyone to pay for centuries-old wrongs. Images: AFP/Getty Images/The Sacramento Bee/APThe Justice Department last month filed a lawsuit against Tennessee, challenging a state law that prohibits the provision of “gender-affirming medical care” to minors. Such “care” includes not only off-label hormonal treatments but “gender-reassignment surgery” that alters a patient’s body to make it more like that of the opposite sex. Some blue states, meanwhile, are changing laws to ensure children can be subjected to such treatments without their parents’ knowledge or consent. The effects of such treatment are permanent, and the campaign to make it available to minors stands in startling contrast to the national consensus about another set of state laws.

Journal Editorial Report: The state may force everyone to pay for centuries-old wrongs. Images: AFP/Getty Images/The Sacramento Bee/APRemember when President Biden and progressives last year accused meat packers of colluding to fatten their profits. Tyson Foods last week reported its first quarterly loss since 2009 as meat prices tumbled. Tyson’s stock plunged after it reported anemic sales and downgraded its forecast. The quarterly loss at the largest U.S. meat supplier marks a stunning reversal from 2021 and early last year when it earned record profits amid a run-up in meat prices.
Boris Diaw was passing through Paris in late September and thought he would check out a basketball game. It was the first home game of the season for the Metropolitans 92, a French league team led by the star teenager Victor Wembanyama. At Marcel-Cerdan Sports Palace in Levallois, near Paris, N.B.A. Diaw grew up in Paris and played 14 years in the N.B.A., including more than four seasons in San Antonio with Tony Parker, considered by many to be the best N.B.A. “I hope he can actually get away from that and just focus on his career and playing and practicing and having fun, too.”
It’s Time to Ditch Your (Supposedly) Nonstick Pans

If you want to know what disappointment feels like, simply open your kitchen cupboard and search for a nonstick pan that is more than a year old. In my experience, no matter how promisingly they start off, every nonstick pan loses its slickness until you find yourself scrubbing off encrusted pieces of food. The global nonstick cookware market is worth $20 billion, according to a market report last year by Dublin-based Grand View Research, and it is expected to grow to $25 billion by the end of the decade. The magazine Cook’s Illustrated says that 70% of all skillets sold in the U.S. are now coated with some kind of nonstick surface. Even if you are not worried about the safety of the various chemicals used for nonstick cookware, it seems odd to buy a pan knowing it will soon let you down.

CHICAGO — Moments before 10 a.m., a security guard thanked the crowd for being cooperative. Instead, it was the Chicago International Miniatures Show. Despite the gathering touting itself as “the World’s No. 1 Dollhouse Miniatures Show,” there aren’t many actual dollhouses. Attendees instead sift through thousands of tiny objects that fill these tiny homes: miniature sponges, chocolate fondue fountains, rocking chairs, barbecue sets, Tupperware containers or fly swatters.

Enter agtech startup BeeHero with a solution. Last December, BeeHero snared $42 million in a Series B round led by impact growth fund Covent Capital in Amsterdam. But BeeHero is not the only startup providing honeybee pollution services, a market estimated by the USDA at $320 million annually. Last year, Limor Farchy, who previously worked at two acquired Israeli tech startups, was recruited as CFO. The agtech startup supplies several top almond growers in California and expects to expand to other crops that rely on pollination.

It urged the European Commission to first help countries address issues caused by existing EU nature laws. The EPP has the most lawmakers of any group in the European Parliament - 176 out of the assembly's 705 members. A source from the EPP group said it stood ready to reject the two laws, if its views were not heard. That could block the policies, if lawmakers from some other groups in the parliament also reject them. A Commission spokesperson declined to comment on the EPP resolution, but said it would work with lawmakers and EU countries to address the issues raised.

CNN —A swarm of bees touched down on a parked Delta Air Lines aircraft Wednesday, delaying a flight from Houston to Atlanta for about three hours. Delta apologized to customers on the delayed flight. My flight leaving Houston is delayed because bees have congregated on the tip of one of the wings. A swarm of bees delayed an Air India flight in 2019. The airport involved in Wednesday’s bee-related delay hasn’t joined in airport beekeeping efforts – yet.
A Delta flight from Houston to Atlanta was delayed by three hours because bees swarmed around its wing. Photos and a video showed the large swarm of bees collecting on the tip of the plane's wing. Ground equipment was used to push back the airplane, and the bees were removed before takeoff. A Delta flight from Texas to Georgia was delayed for three hours on Wednesday after other flying objects latched onto the plane — a swarm of bees. Honey bees typically swarm when an established colony has grown too crowded and the bees fly off to establish a new one.
Carlson forgot that he was just a "worker bee" in media mogul Rupert Murdoch's company, Stern said. Radio icon Howard Stern said ousted Fox News star Tucker Carlson was likely "nothing" to Fox Corp. chair Rupert Murdoch and that he forgot he was just another "worker bee" in the billionaire media mogul's gigantic company. "You're nothing because he's still gonna' have billions upon billions upon billions of dollars and own a giant corporation. You're a worker bee. Murdoch himself made the call to get rid of Carlson, Fox News' top-rated host, people familiar with the situation had told the Los Angeles Times.
The bank made a profit of 24.2 billion francs from its foreign currency positions and 4.3 billion from an increase in the value of the gold it holds. The result will come as a relief to the SNB, which posted a loss of 132.5 billion francs for 2022 overall, the biggest in its 115-year history. In the latest results, the SNB's foreign currency gains were derived from interest of 2.5 billion francs paid on the bonds it holds and 900 million francs in dividends from its stock portfolio. Its also reported a valuation increase of 8.5 billion francs on its massive bond holdings while its equities holdings, which include stakes in most large U.S. companies, increased by 14.7 billion francs in value, the SNB said. Still, the central bank will have been relieved from a monetary policy perspective, UBS economist Alessandro Bee said.
Democratic U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not say “the government must shut down unapproved news agencies to defeat fascism.” The quote stems from an article by satirical website The Babylon Bee, but some social media users have shared screenshots of the article without this context. Although some users acknowledge the content is satire, others don’t. The screenshot circulating stems from an article by The Babylon Bee published on April 23 (archive.ph/akNvz). The Babylon Bee describes itself as “the world’s best satire site (…) We write satire about Christian stuff, political stuff, and everyday life” (www.babylonbee.com/about). It found that marriage and childbirth decreased their productivity and sometimes even dissuaded them from continuing their careers. It led her to mentor women in the field through the advocacy group Graduate Women in Science. Reed wrote that it was a testimony to the strengths of these women that they pursued science despite the fact that they were “often denied entry to colleges and unable to attain professional status.”
There are few living children’s authors who have connected as deeply to their readers as Judy Blume. That’s the argument of “Judy Blume Forever,” a new documentary from Davina Pardo and Leah Wolchok that pays unwavering tribute to Blume and her imprint on young adult literature. It’s not uncommon to hear fans of Blume’s work say that reading her books felt as though she was speaking directly to them through the pages. This is thanks, in no small part, to her frank discussion of mature themes that, at the time she was writing, were considered unusual for what we now call Y.A. novels: adolescent sexuality, religion, disability, bullying, and — in many of her books — the unfair expectations of purity and obedience that parents and society place on children.

Sanofi in 2009 acquired the rights to Auvi-Q, an epinephrine auto-injector intended to compete with EpiPen. Injection of epinephrine is used to treat serious and sometimes life-threatening allergic reactions to foods, medications, bee stings and other causes. Circuit Court of Appeals last July agreed, noting that the exclusive contracts in question were "a normal competitive tool within the epinephrine auto-injector industry." The 10th Circuit added that Sanofi could have competed on those terms, but instead chose initially to market Auvi-Q as a more expensive, premium product.

How We Make Games at The Times

“Game Jam is a ‘hackathon’ for games,” Ms. Bell explained, “and we treat it here as a way to explore new games and new features for existing games, anything new for our game products.”But just because an idea is pitched does not mean that it will be greenlighted. “We want a handful of games that we’re really proud of, with a lot of following and engagement,” Mr. Knight said. He cited Spelling Bee and Wordle as examples of these types of games. (While Spelling Bee was made in-house, Wordle was made by Josh Wardle, a game developer, and sold to The Times.) The team breaks the game development process down into phases, and Mr. Knight and other members of the Games team shared their general process.
SPRING CLEANING can be rewarding in any event. But recently, a pantry purge yielded an unexpected dividend: cocktail-hour inspiration. Taking a cue from a Prohibition-era classic called the Bee’s Knees, I simmered the dregs of various honey jars with water and a sprig of rosemary, producing a syrup with a delicious bite. Shaken with lemon juice and—continuing the clean theme—a zero-proof gin alternative, the resulting tipple satisfies just like the real thing.
