New York CNN —Nearly 900,000 Americans sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner this week will have unions – and the double-digit pay increases they won – to thank. The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. The union won a contract approved by 86% of membership who voted on ratification.

☆ Ford battery plant is back on track but scaled down

CNN —Ford has restarted work on an electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan, but the plant will be smaller than was originally planned. Last month, Ford had laid off some workers building the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. By producing batteries in the United States, the plant should help Ford to take advantage of EV tax credits tied, in part, to domestic battery manufacturing. Ford is also building two battery plants in Kentucky and Tennessee. Ford has said it plans to be able to produce two million electric vehicles globally by late 2026.

New York CNN —American Airlines’ flight attendants’ union wants permission from the government to go on strike in 30 days. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents more than 23,000 members at American has not overcome any of the many legal hurdles it needs to conquer before the union could strike. But even if the flight attendants win their request to have the clock start ticking towards a strike 30 days from now, a strike then is not likely. But it’s possible, and in the case of American Airlines, likely, that Congress would act to block a strike. Last month, flight attendants at Southwest Airlines won an immediate 20% raise, with retroactive pay.

Ford said it would restart construction of the factory near Marshall, Michigan, after being paused two months ago. Ford is pushing for the U.S. Treasury Department to approve lithium-iron, or LFP, batteries made at the Michigan factory to qualify for Inflation Reduction Act EV subsidies. Ford now plans to cut the Michigan battery plant's capacity to 20 gigawatt hours and reduce hiring to 1,700 jobs. Ford said in October that it would cut future electric vehicle investments overall by $12 billion compared to previous plans. The company has previously postponed construction of a battery factory in Kentucky and another in Turkey.

According to Fain, workers at some nonunion plants, including the electric vehicle sales leader, Tesla, have contacted the UAW about joining the union, which hasn't even begun its organizing efforts. Fain declined to say which nonunion companies the UAW would target first. The union, Fain says, also will have to organize Detroit automakers' EV battery plants, which are joint ventures with South Korean companies. He noted the concessions the UAW agreed to in 2008 to help the automakers survive dire financial problems. This time, he said, union members negotiated for themselves but also won raises for nonunion workers in the South who would have received nothing without the UAW.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. is resuming construction on a Michigan electric vehicle battery plant that the company postponed two months ago during a strike by the United Auto Workers union. But the automaker says that due to slowing electric vehicle sales growth, it will scale back the factory size, cutting the number of planned jobs by about one third from 2,500 to 1,700. Ford put the plant, originally to cost $3.5b, on hold in late September as the union went on strike at targeted assembly plants run by Ford, General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis. Unlike the company's other battery plants that are joint ventures, the Marshall factory will be a fully owned Ford subsidiary staffed by Ford workers. But China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Nov 20 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) said Monday that 64% of workers at the Detroit Three automakers voted to ratify new record contracts after a six-week targeted strike, as the union turns its attention to organizing foreign-owned and Tesla auto plants. The UAW for decades has unsuccessfully sought to organize auto factories operated by foreign automakers. In recent weeks, Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), Toyota Motor (7203.T) and Honda Motor (7267.T) have all announced they would hike U.S. factory wages after the UAW contract. (Reuters) - Workers at MGM Resorts International's Detroit casino have rejected a tentative five-year labor contract and will continue with their month-long strike, union officials said on Monday. However, about 2,100 union members at Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino voted on Monday to ratify the new contract, ending a 34-day strike. The council reached a tentative agreement on Nov. 17 for a new contract covering 3,700 workers at MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood Casino at Greektown operated by Penn Entertainment and MotorCity Casino. Despite the continuation of the strike at MGM Grand, operations will continue as usual, the casino said. About 40,000 hospitality workers in the Las Vegas Strip also reached a tentative labor deal with casinos operated by Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and MGM earlier this month.

“The labor contracts don’t mean you go to a dealership and the car costs more money,” said Ivan Drury, analyst for sales tracker Edmunds. If the Big Three could simply pass along higher costs, be it raw material, labor other expenses, in the form of higher prices, no automaker would ever lose money. Even if the labor costs could be passed along in terms of higher prices, it woudn’t be nearly as much as you might think. Any additional labor costs are more likely to eat into automaker profits than they are to raise prices. Another factor driving car prices higher was the desire of consumers to buy cars with more features and options that are now available but were not available in the past.

Overall, 68.4% of Stellantis workers who cast ballots were in favor of ratification, and the contract was leading by more than 9,600 votes with only three small facilities uncounted. U.S. crude inventories rose by 3.6 million barrels last week while production held steady at a record 13.2 million barrels per day, according to data released by the Energy Information Agency Wednesday. Phil Flynn, an oil expert with the Price Futures Group, said slower industrial production combined with increased supply are playing into the slowing demand theory. OPEC said China's crude imports remain healthy, rising by 11.4 million barrels per day in October.

The walkout comes on the coffee chain's Red Cup Day event, during which Starbucks hands out free red-colored, reusable, holiday-themed cups to customers on their coffee purchases. About a dozen workers picketed outside Starbucks' Astor Place outlet at the New York University's campus chanting "no contract, no coffee" and other rhymes. Red Cup day has typically been a major driver of store traffic, with Placer.ai data showing that visits to U.S. Starbucks stores on the day last year jumped 94% over the daily average for the full year. Mary Boca, 22, Astor Place, New York barista, said she wants to see higher pay and more staff at Starbucks. Last year, workers at more than 100 U.S. company-owned Starbucks locations had held a one-day strike on Red Cup day.
