MUMBAI, April 18 (Reuters) - About 300 people queued at Apple's (AAPL.O) store in Mumbai on Tuesday, as fans took selfies with Chief Executive Tim Cook, who inaugurated the first retail store run by the tech giant in India, underscoring the importance of its market. "We are so excited to open ... our first store in India." People flocked to the store from across India, hoping to be among the first to enter, in an opening event featuring local music and folk dancers. Some queued outside from the previous night to get their hands on Apple products, even though they are available online in India. Cook will meet Modi on Wednesday in New Delhi, said the two sources, who included an Indian government official. One of the sources added the Apple chief would also meet India's deputy IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Modi's office declined to comment, while Apple and the IT ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The sources did not elaborate, but Cook's meetings come amid Apple's growing focus on India, the world's second-largest smartphone market. The Mumbai store is in the premier Reliance Jio World Drive mall, home to luxury clothing and jewellery brands like Michael Kors, Kate Spade and Swarovski.
Since Tim Cook became CEO of Apple, he's worked to cement his own legacy — but he still admires his predecessor Steve Jobs' leadership style. "I knew I couldn't be Steve [when I became CEO]," Cook, 62, told GQ on Monday. But that doesn't mean Cook couldn't take a leadership trick or two from Jobs' book. Under his leadership, Apple has grown into a multitrillion-dollar company. Today, the Apple CEO still uses some of Jobs' old traditions, like 9 a.m. meetings every Monday, he told GQ.

BENGALURU, April 5 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) is set to open its first official retail store in India's financial hub of Mumbai, the iPhone maker said on Wednesday. The Cupertino, California-based company launched an online retail store in India in 2020. Its 2021 plans for the launch of an offline retail store in the country were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Apple products have been sold in India for years on ecommerce platforms such as Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Walmart Inc's (WMT.N) Flipkart as well as through resellers. Some products in Apple's catalogue, including iPhones, are assembled in India by Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturers Foxconn (2317.TW) and Wistron Corp (3231.TW).
A passenger left her Apple AirPods on a plane after landing in San Francisco from Tokyo. Alisabeth Hayden told CNN a police officer helped her trace the AirPods to an airport worker's home. Shortly after getting off the plane on a layover at San Francisco International Airport, she realized she'd left her jacket behind. Hayden told CNN she enlisted the help of a detective at San Mateo police force who was working at SFO. She told CNN United gave her $271 and 5,000 air miles after complaining about the condition of the headphones.
NEW DELHI, March 24 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) Taiwanese supplier Pegatron Corp (4938.TW) is in talks to open a second India factory, said two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, as the U.S. tech giant's partners continue to diversify production away from China. Pegatron currently accounts for 10% of Apple's iPhone production in India on an annualised basis, research firm Counterpoint said. The talks for starting a second Pegatron facility on lease are ongoing and it will be located inside Mahindra World City near Chennai, just around where the company inaugurated the first plant in September 2022. India is the second biggest smartphone market in the world, where Apple also plans to assemble iPad tablets and AirPods. Last week, Reuters reported Foxconn has plans to build a $200 million factory in India to produce the wireless earphones for Apple after winning a contract.
The US is losing tech workers to other countries. And so, many tech workers are opting to move and work there instead of the US. Plus, many of these countries are making their immigration systems easier for tech workers. My teammates Emilia David and Paayal Zaveri break down how the US is on the brink of losing an entire generation of tech workers. And it showed that Boomers and Gen Z both love many of the same cars, including the Toyota RAV4.
As AirPods Pro 2 deals go, $50 off the MSRP at this time of year is an unstoppable deal. The original Pros dropped to $159 late last year, although they were two years old by that point, whereas the AirPods Pro 2 only came out last September, so there's no chance they'll drop that low this year. AirPods Pro 2 aren't just for Apple fansI do use a MacBook Air for work and an iPad for occasional personal use, but I'm happy sticking with Android for mobile. AirPods are a daily fixture in my life. I’ve recommended nearly every model of the wireless, portable and easy-pairing earbuds from their start. But Apple ’s market-leading earbuds, along with most other competing Bluetooth buds, have a big problem: tiny, irreplaceable batteries. I have the first-generation AirPods Pro and, after about three years of constant calls, music and podcast playing, I can use them for less than an hour before the “womp womp” low-battery sound plays.
One source said Foxconn will invest more than $200 million in the new India AirPod plant in the southern Indian state of Telangana. The decision to set up production in India was requested by Apple, according to the source. Apple and its key suppliers have been shifting production away from China, where strict COVID-19 curbs disrupted Foxconn's biggest iPhone factory last year. Foxconn said on Wednesday it would ramp up investment outside China to meet customer demand and lower its reliance on China for production. It was not immediately clear whether Foxconn's production plan would have impact on current AirPod suppliers, including Luxshare Precision Industry (002475.SZ).
Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn has won an order to make AirPods for Apple and plans to build a factory in India to produce the wireless earphones, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The deal will see Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics maker and assembler of around 70% of all iPhones, become an AirPod supplier for the first time and underlines efforts by the key Apple supplier to further diversify production away from China. One source said Foxconn will invest more than $200 million in the new India AirPod plant in the southern Indian state of Telangana. It wasn't immediately clear how much the AirPod order would be worth. The decision to set up production in India was requested by Apple, according to the source.
Gen Z prefers Apple's iPhone to Android smartphones, a poll cited in the WSJ found. A 23-year-old told Insider that features like the iPhone Health app meant she was "Apple for life." Apple made up more than half of the US smartphone market last year, Counterpoint data showed. Apple was the top smartphone seller in Q4 last year in both the US and China, Counterpoint said. Despite Apple's popularity with Gen Z, Samsung is still the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world by total shipments, according to International Data Corporation's research released in late January.

Apple CEO Tim Cook presents the new iPhone 14 at an Apple event at their headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S. September 7, 2022. Top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a blog post on Friday that Apple plans to release "low-end" and "high-end" second-generation augmented reality/mixed reality headsets in 2025. Apple has not yet announced or even acknowledged the existence of plans to launch a virtual reality headset. The first model is expected to cost about $3,000 according to Bloomberg, which means Kuo's report of a future "low-end" model could signal that a more affordable version is on the way. It sells, for example, the high-end Apple Watch Ultra but also more affordable Apple Watch and Apple Watch SE series devices.
Leading fund manager Jeff Muhlenkamp put about half of his fund into cash last summer. Last summer, Jeff Muhlenkamp was so concerned about the US economy that he put nearly half of his fund's assets into cash. But in recent months, Muhlenkamp has moved more money into select stocks — even though he acknowledges that there are still lingering risks for stocks and the economy. "You're seeing buyers come back into the market," Muhlenkamp said. Lastly, Microsoft is like Apple in that it's a mature mega-cap company with profitable businesses that produce tons of cash, Muhlenkamp said.

REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas/File PhotoCHENNAI, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Finland's Salcomp, a supplier to Apple (AAPL.O), is planning to more than double its workforce in India to nearly 25,000 over the next three years, a company executive said on Monday. And India is poised to be one of the best alternatives," said Sasikumar Gendham, managing director, Salcomp Manufacturing India. Salcomp, a major supplier of chargers to the iPhone maker, is also setting up a housing complex with entertainment and education for about 15,000 people, said Gendham. Foxconn (2317.TW), another Apple supplier, also plans to quadruple the workforce at its iPhone factory in India over two years, Reuters had reported last year.

For the just-ended quarter, Apple's profits missed Wall Street expectations for the first time since 2016, dragged down by iPhone sales falling for the first time since 2020. The stock was down about 2% after Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said that iPhone sales were likely to improve compared with the quarter ended Dec. 31. In an interview, Cook told Reuters that the production disruptions that plagued Apple's key quarter were now over. During its fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31, Apple faced a wave of challenges that left Wall Street expecting lower sales. Apple said iPhone sales were $65.8 billion, down 8% from the year before and the first fall since 2020.
Apple sales fell 5% to $117.2 billion and were down in every part of the world in the quarter. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook told Reuters that the production disruptions that plagued Apple's key quarter were now over. "I would point out that 8% is still a very severe headwind," Cook told Reuters. On top of supply chain problems for the iPhone, Wall Street analysts had expected iPhone sales to fall this year as part of a larger pattern in which the iPhone 14 family released last year sells more slowly after two straight years of strong sales of iPhone 12 and 13 models. Apple said iPhone sales were $65.8 billion, down 8% from the year before and below analyst estimates of $68.3 billion.
Jan 29 (Reuters) - Apple-supplier Jabil Inc's (JBL.N) India unit has begun making components for AirPods in the country and is shipping plastic bodies or enclosures for AirPods to China and Vietnam, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Jabil did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The move marks another step in Apple's plans to shift its manufacturing away from China amid rising trade and geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington. The iPhone maker wants India to account for up to 25% of its production, from about 5%-7% now. Apple has bet big on India since it began iPhone assembly in the country in 2017, in line with the Indian government's push for local manufacturing.
Many people hoping to score a deal on Apple Inc.’s top-of-the-line wireless earbuds are winding up with something far less valuable: counterfeit AirPods. Caroline Ballard, 26 years old, was perusing Facebook Marketplace when she came across a pair of new AirPods Pro for $80, less than a third of the $249 list price.
Insider recently spoke to a 32-year-old nonprofit worker who went to Vegas while working remotely. They didn't tell their boss, and everything was going smoothly until an unexpected Zoom meeting. When I started working entirely from home, I didn't think I would find myself taking a Zoom call from a Vegas casino while trying to make my boss think I was in my home office. I feel like she's judging me every time my Zoom background is something different than what she knows to be my home office with all my plants behind me. My coworker said she'd set up a quick Zoom for us to check what our boss would be able to hear.
