Opinion | A Beautiful Inflation Report
  + stars: | 2024-07-09 | by ( Paul Krugman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
One of my go-to economic data experts emailed on Thursday morning about the latest inflation report, which showed prices actually falling in June and up only 3 percent over the past year. It was, he declared, “beautiful.”Your aesthetic sense may vary, but we’ve now had two months of really good price data, enough to puncture the bubble of pessimism that, um, inflated early this year. Many economists argued, however, that the bad data was just noise, largely reflecting one-time price resets at the start of the year. Note that the Federal Reserve focuses not on the Consumer Price Index but on an alternative measure, the personal consumption expenditure price index, which isn’t in yet for June. And since the Fed is supposed to skate to where the puck will be, not where it is right now, there’s now an overwhelming case for interest rate cuts.

Read previewThere is perhaps no better example of the hedge fund industry's maturation than Brevan Howard. The $35 billion firm has changed considerably since 60-year-old Alan Howard stepped back from running its day-to-day operations in 2019. Now, Howard — the firm's majority owner — no longer manages money at Brevan. The firm's two biggest funds — the long-running, $11.9 billion Master Fund and the younger, $12.2 billion Alpha Fund — each manage more money now than the entire firm did five years ago. With earnings season kicking off, we'll break down an industrial stock reporting Friday and how to trade it. Historically, Alcoa Inc. marked the start of earnings season, being one of the first major companies to report results. It has underperformed the S & P year-to-date, down nearly 2.5% and declining more than 20% since the late March highs. The company's sales data, reflecting real-time demand for industrial and construction supplies, is closely linked to economic health. The trade Given the expectation that the stock is unlikely to rebound on earnings, a calendar spread could be a suitable trade.

CNN —Paramount Global—the sprawling media empire behind CBS, MTV, and one of Hollywood’s most storied movie studios—has agreed to merge with technology scion David Ellison’s Skydance Media, ending years of speculation over the company’s fate. The complicated transaction will see Skydance first buy National Amusements, then merge with Paramount, valuing Skydance at $4.75 billion. The combined company will be helmed by Ellison as chief executive and former NBCUniversal chief Jeff Shell as president. The deal caps a tumultuous and protracted saga that began in December, with the two companies entering into exclusive negotiations in April, resulting in the ouster of longtime Paramount chief executive Bob Bakish. In the meantime, the company has been run by a triumvirate of leaders: Brian Robbins, chief executive of Paramount Pictures; Chris McCarthy, chief executive of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios; and George Cheeks, chief executive of CBS.

Paramount Global will merge with Skydance, capping off a months-long negotiation that included various twists and turns, and will see the Redstone family step away from control of the storied movie studio and media company. Paramount's special committee agreed to the merger on Sunday, days after Shari Redstone's National Amusements, the controlling shareholder of Paramount, once again reached a preliminary agreement with Skydance. The latest iteration of the deal will see the buying consortium, which includes RedBird Capital Partners and KKR, invest more than $8 billion into Paramount and to acquire National Amusements. The deal gives National Amusements an enterprise value of $2.4 billion, which includes $1.75 billion in equity. A completed Skydance merger would mark a major shift for the ownership of Paramount, as well as for Hollywood as a whole.

London CNN —British voters have handed the Labour Party its first election victory in almost two decades, hoping that a new center-left government will revive Britain’s ailing economy and fix collapsing public services. The win is a triumph for Keir Starmer, a former chief prosecutor who only entered parliament in 2015 and will become prime minister later Friday. “It feels good, I have to be honest.”But Labour’s jubilation may soon give way to trepidation given the economic challenges ahead. Making these problems even harder to solve: stubbornly low economic growth. To some extent, the government is likely hoping economic growth will be stronger than forecast and help with both goals.

More immediately, second-quarter earnings may prove a positive catalyst for small caps since expectations are so low, according to Jefferies' DeSanctis. Ultimately, however, many investors say that a rotation into small caps is coming, even if it hasn't happened yet.

watch nowHeadline inflation in the euro area dipped to 2.5% in June, the European Union's statistics agency said Tuesday, while the closely watched core and services prints held steady. Core inflation, excluding the volatile effects of energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, stayed at 2.9% from the prior month, narrowly missing the 2.8% economists had forecast. Investors will now parse what the latest data means for the trajectory of interest rates in the 20-nation euro zone, following the European Central Bank's initial 25 basis point cut in June. Volatility in the consumer price index has long been expected this year, as choppy base effects from the energy market unwind. In June, year-on-year energy inflation in the euro zone was 0.2%, a sharp switch from earlier in the year when the sector had a strong disinflationary pull.

Investors deliberating whether the stock rally can continue in the second half of 2024 should keep an eye on the 200-day moving average, according to Stephen Suttmeier, technical research strategist at Bank of America Securities. The indicator, which is used by chart analysts to determine long-term trends, has been positive during the first six months of the year — as the S & P 500 surged 15% to record levels. The broad market index did not have a single daily close below its 200-day moving average in the first half. However, if the S & P 500 falls below its 200-day moving average in the second half of 2024, that will mean weaker returns, the technician said. "[This] scenario shows average and median returns of 0.60% (SPX 5490) and 2.43% (SPX 5590), respectively," the technician said.
