Kenvue reported second-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped expectations Thursday in the consumer health company's first quarterly report since it spun out from Johnson & Johnson two months ago. But J&J still owns a 90% stake in Kenvue, meaning it can generally control the direction of the spinoff's business for now. Excluding certain items, the company's adjusted earnings were 32 cents a share. The company's full-year adjusted earnings outlook is $1.26 to $1.31 per share. The company reported sales growth across its three business divisions in the second quarter.

Whenever people ask me what I do for a living, I tell them that I’m a translator from English to English. Why did President Biden tell CNN that “this is one of the most extreme” Israeli cabinets he’d ever seen? And why did the U.S. ambassador to Israel just say that America is working to prevent Israel from “going off the rails”? According to a 2020 Congressional Research Service report, Israel has received the most U.S. foreign assistance of any country in the world since World War II, at $146 billion, not adjusted for inflation. That’s quite an allowance and one that might have merited a little more respect for the U.S. president from Ben-Gvir, who in his youth was convicted of inciting racism against Arabs.

Reuters is revealing details of the Diego Garcia project and SubCom’s deepening ties with the Pentagon. SubCom’s loyalty is especially important because it is the only major U.S. subsea cable company. Rather, they carefully obscured the U.S. military component within a larger private-sector cable project, according to four subsea cable industry sources with knowledge of the arrangement. That project, known as the Oman Australia Cable, was spearheaded by SUBCO, a Brisbane-based subsea cable investment company owned by Australian entrepreneur Bevan Slattery. UAE to set up investment ministry, PM says
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
DUBAI, July 3 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will set up a new federal ministry of investment to develop the Gulf state's investment strategy both globally and domestically as it contends with growing economic competition from neighbours. The Gulf states, largely dependent on hydrocarbons for revenue, all have plans underway to diversify their economies and sources of income. The ministry's aims would include stimulating the investment environment in the UAE and to make the UAE's legislation and procedures more competitive to attract global investment, Sheikh Mohammed said. The UAE will also set up a Financial Stability Council to monitor risks, and deal with financial crises to further its objectives of becoming a major global financial centre. Foreign direct investment into Saudi Arabia was about 30 billion riyals ($8 billion), based on data from the Saudi investment ministry.

HONG KONG, June 28 (Reuters) - Chinese tech giants Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) and Ant Group said that they would allow users to link international credit cards to their platforms, an issue that has long plagued foreign visitors as the country’s payment system has kept credit cards out for years. Foreign visitors often find themselves unable to pay for things in China where many shops and restaurants now only accept mobile payment rather than credit cards or cash. Tencent and Ant had formed partnerships with Visa and Mastercard in 2019 to make foreign cards usable on their platforms. Under the new setup, international travelers can set up their foreign cards on these apps with a few simple steps. While China’s mobile payment networks have been closed off to foreign-issued credit cards, domestically issued credit cards under Visa and Mastercard have long been supported.

KYIV, June 27 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stepped up calls for Ukraine to receive a "political invitation" to join NATO when the military alliance holds a summit in Lithuania next month. Zelenskiy also reiterated demands for security guarantees if Ukraine, which has been invaded by Russia, is not given membership of the alliance in the near future. "There is every reason for a political invitation for Ukraine to join the Alliance," he wrote on the Telegram messaging app. He said there was "a full understanding of the security guarantees for Ukraine until the moment of accession" but gave no further details. Zelenskiy has also said he recognises it would be impossible to join while Russia's war in Ukraine is still raging.

A seat looking up at the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, perched at the head of a long table. To international audiences, the optics of Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken’s two-day visit to Beijing barely raised any eyebrows. But to nationalist-leaning audiences in China, especially on social media, the scenes tell a different story. And during his visit, he was schooled on respecting China’s interests and played supplicant to Mr. Xi. Chinese social media users gleefully noted that Mr. Blinken arrived on Father’s Day, the implication being — using the parlance of the internet — that Mr. Xi was America’s daddy.

Foreign direct investment in China has fallen to an 18-year low. “The hope is that high-level dialogues like this can start to inject some certainty for business into an increasingly fraught and unpredictable trade relationship,” he said. Still, as one of the world’s largest consumer markets and home to many factories that supply global businesses, China exerts a powerful pull. On a visit to China this month, Elon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla and owner of Twitter, described the American and Chinese economies as “conjoined twins” and said he opposed to efforts to split them. Syngenta is a pillar in Beijing’s strategy to shore up food security and will use the deal to pay down debt. The landmark IPO coincides with signs that Wall Street’s small position in the market is shrinking further. China's economy is stumbling and is likely headed for a lost decade similar to Japan's. That's according to former IMF official Desmond Lachman, who said China may no longer be the world's growth driver. But a lost decade also means "we no longer need to worry that China will eat our economic lunch." "One silver lining of a likely lost Chinese economic decade is that we no longer need to worry that China will eat our economic lunch," Lachman added. "As occurred with the supposed Japanese economic miracle in the 1980s before it, we will find that the Chinese economy had clay feet."
