DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis are meeting with United Auto Workers bargainers Thursday to see if they can reach a contract agreement that mirrors a deal signed with crosstown rival Ford. Nearly 17,000 striking workers at Ford left the picket lines when the agreement was announced Wednesday night and will return to work shortly. About 57,000 Ford workers still have to vote on the tentative pact. It wasn't clear what Ford agreed to in terms of battery factories. Ford had announced plans to build two battery factories in Kentucky, one in Tennessee and another in Michigan, but the Michigan plant is now on hold.

Ford (F) reported weaker-than-expected earnings on Thursday as warranty costs ate into profits. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased 22% from last year to $2.2 billion but fell short of the $2.7 billion analysts forecasted. Ford shares moved more than 3% lower in after-hours trading in reaction to the disappointing quarter. Ford said the strike has caused Ford to trim about 80,000 units from its plan, reducing 2023 EBIT by $1.3 billion. CNN —Roughly 900 US troops have been deployed or are deploying to the Middle East amid heightened tensions in the region after a series of attacks on coalition bases that resulted in minor injuries for almost two dozen troops. “These include forces that have been on prepare to deploy orders, and which are deploying from the continental United States,” Pentagon spokesman Brig. Of those, 19 — 15 at Al Assad Air Base in Syria, and four at Al-Tanf Garrison in Iraq — have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI), Ryder said. That is in addition to US troops already in Iraq and Syria – roughly 2,500 and 900, respectively – and Navy assets that were announced to be heading to the region. The USS Dwight D. New York CNN —As of Wednesday, the unprecedented strike by the United Auto Workers union against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis is now also the longest American auto strike in 25 years. The last time the union struck one of the automakers, with its 2019 strike at GM, the strike lasted 40 days. Wednesday is the 41st day of the strike that started on September 15. This strike is also the first time the union has walked out at all three automakers at the same time. All the companies are on record saying they want to reach a deal to end the strike, as has the union.

The tentative deal with Ford could increase pressure on the other companies to reach an agreement with the union. Fain confirmed the Detroit Three had converged on a 23% wage hike offer and made progress on other issues. But he told UAW members "there is more to be won". While warning of possible expanded strikes, Fain also told UAW members the talks were closing in on an end. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 198,000 for the week ended Oct. 14, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Though the labor market is gradually cooling, conditions remain tight, with claims hovering in the lower end of their range of 194,000 to 265,000 for this year. The claims report covered the week during which the government surveyed business establishments for the nonfarm payrolls component of October's employment report. The so-called continuing claims increased 29,000 to a still-low 1.734 million during the week ending Oct. 7, the claims report showed.

As a 25-year-old junior executive at the car company that bears his last name, William Clay Ford Jr. had a bracing introduction to labor negotiations when a union official demanded that he stand up and vouch that he was made of the same stuff as his great-grandfather Henry Ford. Mr. Ford, now the company’s executive chairman, harked back to the moment in an interview this week about how he and his company are navigating one of their most difficult labor negotiations in decades. The United Automobile Workers union has shut down three Ford plants, including its largest, and other plants and distribution centers at General Motors and Stellantis, which owns Chrysler. He has referred to the companies as “the enemy,” and has said the union is fighting “corporate greed” and standing up to the “billionaire class.”In a speech this week, Mr. Ford said the strikes were helping nonunion automakers like Tesla, Toyota and Honda. WASHINGTON, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) said on Wednesday a proposal by President Joe Biden's administration to hike vehicle fuel economy standards through 2032 threatens to cause "substantial economic hardship" for the No. The agency made the proposal as Biden's administration seeks to cut greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change and to reduce fuel use. The proposal would result in a fleet-wide average fuel efficiency of 58 miles (93 km) per gallon. "We see substantial risk of unprecedented civil penalties in the CAFE program," Ford said. It added that its proposal "is focused on saving Americans money at the gas pump and strengthening American energy independence."
