AMES, Iowa—Ron DeSantis says he will never back down. The next three days will test that confidence. Needing a strong performance in Monday’s Iowa caucuses, the first nominating contest of the 2024 Republican presidential primary race, the Florida governor has made the state his beachhead—even if his goal is to come in second place behind Donald Trump.

"You get the feeling in Iowa right now that we're sleepwalking into a nightmare and there's nothing we can do about it," Doug Gross, a prominent GOP lawyer and backer of former UN ambassador Nikki Haley's presidential campaign, told the newspaper. "The difference is just so stark in terms of American values and in terms of what is the future going to be," the former senator told The Times.

“He’s got basically a Praetorian Guard of the conservative media — Fox News, the websites, all this stuff,” Mr. DeSantis told reporters outside his campaign headquarters in Urbandale, Iowa. When Mr. DeSantis was a House member, he became a star among conservatives through appearances on Fox News. Fox News hosted Mr. Trump just this week for a live town hall from Iowa. To that end, Mr. DeSantis used his line about Mr. Trump’s Praetorian Guard during an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” before deploying it again on Friday. As for other conservative media outlets, Newsmax — often friendly to Mr. Trump — aired a Christmas special about Mr. DeSantis and his family late last year.

The 2024 Iowa Republican caucuses are just days away. As they have for decades, Iowa Republicans will kick off actual voting with a series of caucuses around the state's 99 counties. And yet, no candidate will have anywhere near the number of delegates needed to become the Republican presidential nominee. As for the winners, the last three winners of a competitive Iowa Republican caucus, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, and former Arkansas Gov. In interviews, Iowans expressed an array of opinions on Trump’s legal problems, from anger over what they say they believe is a “witch hunt,” echoing the former president’s criticism, to a desire to move on and focus on issues plaguing the country. Among those who were not considering the former president, 57% said Trump was controversial and 48% said they were concerned about his legal issues. “If Trump is the nominee, it’s going to be about January 6, legal issues, criminal trials,” DeSantis said during a CNN debate Wednesday. “I think that Vivek is, in a roundabout way, even better for Trump than Trump being in there,” Sherman said.

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Some of the most contested real estate for Iowa's Republican caucuses is a vast, wind-swept plain where hogs outnumber people by the millions. Ron DeSantis have invested in appealing to politically influential evangelicals, making the fight for northwest Iowa a microcosm of the race to win Monday's caucuses. DeSantis has spent long hours courting voters here, stopping Thursday in Rock Rapids, population 2,600, before heading to Le Mars, about four times larger. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, with his social conservative brand, competed strongly for northwest Iowa in 2016 and edged Trump in the region on his way to a narrow caucus victory. Ambassador Nikki Haley, aiming for a surprise second-place finish in Iowa, has campaigned in northwest Iowa, but less often and to smaller audiences.

With temperatures threatening to dip below zero in Iowa on Monday, some of the voters preparing to caucus for Nikki Haley have already overcome a different hurdle: a long history of voting for Democrats. At recent campaign events across Iowa, a number of Democrats and left-leaning independents said they saw Ms. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, as a reasonable Republican who could move the country away from bitter partisanship and restore civility in national discourse. Many were drawn to her pledges to unite the country, and to work across the aisle on thorny issues such as abortion. “Now that I have my Republican card, I have to go visit my father’s gravesite here in town and apologize,” said Mr. Brown, who lives in Clinton, Iowa. He added that his father, a staunch Democrat and World War II veteran, always voted a straight party ticket.

The Biden campaign slammed former President Donald Trump for echoing Nazi sentiments with his repeated statements on Saturday night that immigrants are "poisoning the blood" of the United States. The Republican frontrunner most recently repeated the anti-immigrant remarks at a New Hampshire rally and in a Truth Social post Saturday night. The loss of media credibility in the Trump era is an old story but isn’t there any journalistic interest in at least allowing a non-Trump alternative to receive a fair hearing? Witness Sunday’s questioning on Meet the Press by NBC’s Kristen Welker, who in interviewing Gov. Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.) seemed determined to confirm the theory that media companies want another Trump candidacy to boost ratings while enhancing the chances of a Democratic victory.

Other than day one," Trump said when asked to deny he would become a "dictator" if he wins the November election. Trump, seeking a second White House term in a likely election re-match with Democratic President Joe Biden, has frequently promised "retribution" on political opponents if he gains power again. Trump was U.S. president between 2017 and 2021, and has refused to concede that he lost to Biden in the 2020 election. Trump will skip the event, as he has done for the three previous Republican debates. Biden has repeatedly warned that Trump is a threat to democracy, and that a second Trump term could usher in an unprecedented and dangerous age of American autocracy.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump declined to rule out abusing power if he wins the presidency again after Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity asked him Tuesday to respond to growing Democratic criticism of his rhetoric. The GOP presidential front-runner has talked about targeting his rivals — referring to them as “vermin” — and seeking retribution if he returns to the Oval Office for what he argues are politically motivated prosecutions against him. We’re closing the border and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. The interview before a live audience was taped in Davenport, Iowa, Tuesday and aired later in the night. Trump had tried to turn the tables on Biden during a Saturday speech in Iowa, arguing that the man whose election victory Trump tried to overturn is “the destroyer of American democracy.”

watch nowHigh schools have been buzzing about financial education. They earned an "A" because in those states, high school graduates in the class of 2023 were required to have taken a personal finance course before graduation. Studies show personal finance education can make a significant difference in young adults' financial behaviors, from improving credit scores and lowering loan delinquency rates to reducing payday lending and helping students make better decisions about college loans. A few states still have 'virtually no requirements'Meanwhile, four states — California, Connecticut, Massachusetts and South Dakota — as well as Washington, D.C., got failing grades, receiving "F"s in this report because they have "virtually no requirements" for personal finance education in high school. Still, advocates in "failing" states, such as California, are working to change the laws to ensure students are guaranteed financial education.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst//File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLITTLETON, Colorado, Dec 5 (Reuters) - U.S. electricity generation from wind power is on course to surpass coal-fired electricity generation, potentially by 2026, as wind supply growth expands at a record pace just as coal-fired generation is cut across the country. U.S. wind power generation on track to surpass coal-fired generationBut with wind power generation rapidly rising in most regions while utilities steadily cut coal capacity, wind output is on track to eventually overtake coal output within the U.S. electricity generation mix, which will mark a significant milestone in U.S. energy transition efforts. In 2015 - before U.S. power producers accelerated renewable power development - coal-fired electricity generation was nearly 700% greater than electricity output from U.S. wind farms. PEAKS AND TROUGHSU.S. wind generation already briefly surpassed total coal-fired power output in April this year, when wind electricity generation totalled 42.85 terawatt hours compared to the 39.8 TWh generated by coal plants, according to Ember. That means that within the current decade U.S. wind power will be able to surpass coal-fired power in the electricity generation mix, and help accomplish a major U.S. energy transition target.

Young voters could be pivotal in an election year where the race is expected to be very close between presumptive nominees Biden and Republican front-runner Donald Trump. While young voters tend to favor Democrats, even a small drop in turnout among those voters – or a shift toward Republicans – could make a dispositive difference in battleground states. Biden has a dramatic disadvantage, compared with Trump, on the economy, even as young voters report overwhelmingly that their own financial situations are solid. That's on track with Biden's performance among young voters in 2020, when exit polls showed Biden took 60% of the youth vote, compared to 36% of young voters who voted for Trump. The data on young voters reflects a trend other polling has shown throughout the campaign season: Americans are unhappy with the ways things are going and don't want a Biden-Trump rematch.

CNN —Donald Trump is underscoring the profound choice that voters could face next year with expansive claims of unchecked presidential power alongside increasingly unapologetic anti-democratic rhetoric. This has huge consequences not simply for the courtroom accounting that is yet to take place over his first turbulent term. If the twice-impeached former president wins the Republican nomination and the presidency, it is already clear that a second term would risk destroying the principle that presidents do not hold monarchial power. “Joe Biden is not the defender of American democracy,” Trump said during a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday. And if he succeeds in 2024, his legal arguments will have been a warning of a second term that he envisions with almost no guardrails.

REUTERS/Carlos Barria Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking permission to appeal a decision reinstating gag orders in his New York civil fraud case to the state's highest court, a court filing showed on Monday. A mid-level state appeals court last week reinstated the gag orders, which barred Trump and his lawyers from making public statements about court staff. Justice Arthur Engoron imposed the gag order on Trump on Oct. 3 after Trump accused Engoron's top clerk of political bias in a post on his Truth Social platform. The post left the court "inundated" with hundreds of threats from Trump supporters, Engoron said in a court filing. In Monday's filing, Trump lawyer Clifford Robert asked the mid-level appeals court, known as the Appellate Division, to allow Trump to appeal its reinstatement of the orders to the Albany-based Court of Appeals.
