[1/5] CEO Ryo Yoshida poses for a photograph with ARCHAX, a giant human-piloted robot developed by his start-up Tsubame Industries Co., in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, Japan September 27, 2023. REUTERS/Issei Kato Acquire Licensing RightsYOKOHAMA, Japan, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Tokyo-based start-up Tsubame Industries has developed a 4.5-metre-tall (14.8-feet), four-wheeled robot that looks like "Mobile Suit Gundam" from the wildly popular Japanese animation series, and it can be yours for $3 million. The 3.5-ton robot, which will be unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show later this month, has two modes: the upright 'robot mode' and a 'vehicle mode' in which it can travel up to 10 km (6 miles) per hour. "Japan is very good at animation, games, robots and automobiles so I thought it would be great if I could create a product that compressed all these elements into one," said Ryo Yoshida, the 25-year-old chief executive of Tsubame Industries. Yoshida plans to build and sell five of the machines for the well-heeled robot fan, but hopes the robot could one day be used for disaster relief or in the space industry.

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — European captain Luke Donald was delivering his Ryder Cup victory speech in front of a giddy crowd at Marco Simone when his celebrating players standing beside him started a chant that quickly swept through the grandstands. He is already a multiple winner on the European tour. Cars drive along a flooded street on Church Avenue amid a coastal storm on September 29, 2023 in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn borough New York City. And more than a decade after Hurricane Sandy forced officials to rethink the meaning of climate resilience in New York City, it appears there's still much to be done. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley, calling the storm a "life-threatening rainfall event." The storm caused about $19 billion in damage to New York City. In densely populated cities like New York, flooding risks are heightened because of the built environment and lack of green spaces.

Many Americans, even once-ardent proponents of globalization, have soured on trade with China. But there is a growing danger that as the United States tries to address its difficulties with China, it will pull back too far, severing economic ties that benefit American families and contribute to global peace and prosperity. Soybean farmers in the Upper Midwest sold a record $16.4 billion of their beans to China, mostly for pig feed. Hundreds of millions of Chinese have come out of poverty thanks to global trade, and have become consumers of U.S. goods and services. Amid the harsh talk, the dollar value of American trade with China — Americans buying Chinese products and the Chinese buying American products — rose to a record in 2022.

A house is fully engulfed by flames at the Dixie Fire, a wildfire near the town of Greenville, California, U.S. August 5, 2021. REUTERS/Fred Greaves/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Liberty Mutual Group Inc FollowSept 21 (Reuters) - California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara took steps on Thursday to allow property insurers to factor in climate risks including wildfires in rate prices, if they increase underwriting in at-risk areas to wean consumers off state-funded coverage. The measures by the state's insurance regulator follow an executive order by Governor Gavin Newsom urging regulatory action to expand coverage in underserved areas, account for catastrophe risks in rates, and keep the FAIR Plan solvent. The continued retreat of larger insurance carriers from the California residential property insurance market signals ongoing regulatory constraints, rising cost inflation, and higher catastrophe losses, credit rating agency Fitch said in a note earlier this year. REUTERS/Florence Lo/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 19 (Reuters) - A senior Republican in Congress asked Tesla (TSLA.O) Tuesday to detail its relationship with Chinese battery manufacturer CATL (300750.SZ) amid concerns electric vehicle subsidies are flowing to foreign entities raising security concerns. Smith said the committee is concerned CATL "may be trying to negotiate other agreements like the agreement with Ford." The question is how what precisely constitutes a "foreign entity of concern", and so far no foreign battery supplier has been labeled as such. In July, Smith and Mike Gallagher, Republican chair of the Select Committee on China, demanded Ford answer questions about the CATL deal. Ford told Reuters Tuesday it agrees that "U.S. taxpayer dollars should support American manufacturers, not foreign entities of concern."

REUTERS/Nathan Howard/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 19 (Reuters) - The chair of the U.S. House of Representatives' committee on China is planning to meet with a semiconductor industry group to express concerns over U.S. investments in China's chip industry, according to a source familiar with the matter. The group represents major chip firms such as Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Intel (INTC.O), whose sales to China have been affected by recent changes in U.S. export rules. The source added that Gallagher also aims to talk with the group about reducing the number of semiconductor manufacturing machines that could be sent to China. WASHINGTON — Members of a bipartisan House committee examining economic competition between the U.S. and China said Tuesday that Congress needs to legislate barriers for American investment in Chinese companies, including artificial intelligence. Gallagher, R-Wisc., said during the hearing that American companies continuing to invest in blacklisted Chinese firms are helping to fund the Chinese government's push to invade Taiwan. Government employee pension funds are also at play. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., ranking member of the committee, cited a May Newsweek report stating that at least 115 mutual funds offered under the federal government's Thrift Savings Plan contain one or more of 30 sanctioned or watch-listed Chinese companies that threaten national security. "By investing in these companies we risk supporting the CCP's military aggression and their human rights abuses," Krishnamoorthi said.
