On a humid morning in mid-July, John Grisham was lounging under a candy-striped awning at Cove Creek Park, a multimillion-dollar youth baseball complex outside Charlottesville, Virginia. He looked comfortable and sweatless in the heat, wearing a crisp white button-down with the sleeves rolled up, slate-colored chinos, understated sneakers and a wristwatch with a slice of an MLB baseball mounted onto its dial. He was surrounded by 40 or so acres of cow pasture that, in the 1990s, he’d transformed into a ballpark with money earned from his greatest talent: imagining stories and selling them.

It's worth noting the difference in phrasing I'm using here: bad managers vs. great leaders. They may have the title, but all the best work gets done when everyone works together — themselves included. The best leaders make everything all about the objective — not about titles and rank, not about you or me, but about the shared goal. Great leaders work hard to make the whole greater than the sum of the parts. Here, too, great leaders recognize the power of their positions.

Copy, which calls itself the world's first AI fashion magazine, was created by Carl-Axel Wahlström. One of the spreads in Copy magazine places AI-generated models on the runway at fashion week. Another spread in Copy magazine portrayed AI-generated female race-car drivers. AI technology is a reflection of the images and information we give it, he said. In most years, there is a very specific climate pattern at the U.S. Open. The tournament starts at the end of the dog days of August, in the lingering heat and humidity of a New York summer. By the final matches, at the end of the first full week of September, it’s a good idea to bring a light sweater or a windbreaker to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Not this year. It is heat and humidity so oppressive that it parks itself in the brain, sparks fear and makes it difficult to focus on anything else, especially returning serves of 130 miles per hour and chasing forehands and backhands around the court for as many as five hours.

The Hunt for the Ideal Bánh Mì

In the 1950s, bánh mì skewed further from French tastes and closer to the distinctly Vietnamese iterations that are ubiquitous today. Since the 1970s, when the Vietnamese diaspora became a global presence, bánh mì have proliferated as well. Their bánh mì crunched like a symphony, accompanied by what was likely the best chile crisp I’ve ever had. Ideally, you’ll pick up the baguettes and butter from a Vietnamese bakery or bánh mì shop. But it’s always worth going extra on the pork shoulder; leftovers hold the promise of future bánh mì.

When it comes to chocolate chip cookies, I prefer a chewy texture and balanced sweetness. The chocolate chip cookies my mom made will always reign supreme in my mind. A growing number of bakeries are offering their own takes on the classic chocolate chip cookie. I decided to visit both chains to see how their hero chocolate chip cookies stacked up. The Insomnia chocolate chip cookie was smaller and thinner than the Crumbl cookie, and much flatter.

An Easy, Summery Tomato Pasta That’s Ready for Fall
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( Alexa Weibel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The recipe involves, essentially, three simple steps: Boiling the pasta, roasting ingredients on sheet pans, then tossing them all together. Because deliciousness often hinges on attention to detail, you’ll collect some of the starchy pasta water to scrape up the caramelized bits, or sucs, on the bottom of your baking sheets. Finally, you’ll toss the sauce with the pasta, vigorously dispersing the tomatoes and coating the crisp beans and filling your noodles’ nooks. You may be tempted to cut down on the precious pool of olive oil that this recipe requires, but do try to resist. Built with budget in mind, this simple pasta wouldn’t taste quite so lavish without it.

“DNA has been really extremely helpful for us, with the Rapid DNA,” said Alison Galloway, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of California-Santa Cruz, who helped identify remains during the Camp Fire. “If you don’t have that … then it’s a lot more difficult.”In general, forensic experts rely on DNA, dental analysis, fingerprints, medical hardware or circumstantial evidence to try to identify remains. “We’re still diligently working trying to make sure that we can identify (remains), and that’s why that DNA is so important, because we got fingerprints from three,” he said. Galloway, the forensics professor, said one of the advantages of the Rapid DNA technology is in quickly determining whether a DNA swab is usable. Maui asks for family members to come forwardFor Rapid DNA to work, family members of the missing have to willingly submit to DNA swabs.

As Starbucks celebrates the 20th anniversary of its pumpkin spice latte, the coffee chain is adding a third pumpkin drink to its fall menu. Starting Thursday, the iced pumpkin cream chai latte joins the company's existing pumpkin lineup, which also includes the pumpkin cream cold brew, returning for its fifth year. The seasonal menu addition comes as Starbucks customers increasingly choose cold drinks over hot options, no matter the temperature outside. Starbucks' more upscale Reserve locations, which also serve alcohol, will serve special pumpkin spice drinks for the first time, too. The Reserve fall menu includes a pumpkin spice espresso martini, playing off the espresso martini craze, and a pumpkin spice whiskey barrel-aged iced latte.

has a bumper crop!” — AmyIf you find eggplant inedible, either because of its texture or taste, you want recipes that use up as much produce as possible while making it largely undetectable. In Kay Chun’s eggplant and bean chili, eggplant is simmered in a garlicky tomato sauce until it collapses into a chile-spiced ragù. Pairing stewed eggplant with aromatics and protein-packed legumes is a solid strategy: Kay does it again in her recipe for eggplant dal, in which cumin, coriander, garlic, ginger and fresh chile season lentils and eggplant. Bitter eggplant is often undercooked eggplant. And if you’re frustrated with the results of sautéing and baking, try steaming: In about 10 minutes, strips of eggplant are rendered silky in Hetty Lui McKinnon’s recipe for liang ban qie zi, eggplant with garlic, ginger and scallions.
