(CNN) Around 200 whales have died and just 35 remain alive following a mass stranding in Australia this week, rescue teams say. The pilot whales were found Wednesday stranded on an exposed beach along the coast of Tasmania. Rescue efforts are ongoing to save the remaining whales. "We are primarily focused this morning on really getting into that rescue operation and getting [the whales] released," Brendon Clark of the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service told the Australia Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday. "We are conscious that some of them may re-beach themselves and so we'll be monitoring that."
According to a new study, there are estimated to be 2.5 million times more ants on this planet than people. In total, that's 20 quadrillion — or 20,000,000,000,000,000 — ants. Taken together, the total mass of ants on the planet would actually outweigh all of the world’s wild birds and mammals, he added. Jorge Villalba / Getty Images / iStockphotoAnts can be found in nearly all habitats except for polar regions, according to the study. A separate study published in April 2020 in the journal Science found that the planet has lost more than one-quarter of its land-dwelling insects in the past 30 years.
Many UK media companies pulled advertising after the Queen's death and during her funeral. Analysts estimate the ad blackouts could cost media companies more than $100 million in lost revenue. Experts also said media companies could benefit from extra print sales and pent-up advertiser demand. Douglas McCabe, CEO and director of publishing and tech at Enders Analysis, estimated the lost advertising could equate to around 15 million pounds ($17 million) a day for TV companies, 2 million pounds ($2.3 million) for radio, 2 million pounds for billboard owners, and 1 million pounds ($1.1 million) for newspapers. But even when advertising returns, UK media companies remain in a tight spot due to soaring inflation and a gloomy economic outlook.

MEXICO CITY — In a trendy part of Mexico City, in a park surrounded by hipster coffeeshops and restaurants, stands a figure dressed in white with hands in prayer like a Catholic statuette: the so-called patron saint against gentrification. Nearly two million foreigners touched down at the Mexico City International Airport in the first half of 2022, inching toward the record 2.5 million arrivals in the first half of 2019. The gap between American and Mexican salaries means even affluent Mexico City residents can get priced out, in a city that is already home to wide wealth disparities. According to Mexico’s statistics agency, the top 10% of Mexico City households earned more than 13 times as much as the bottom 10% of households in 2020. Coronado, an architect and interior designer who lives between Los Angeles and Mexico City, said he understands locals are resentful.
Commercial property is a bright spot in Chinese real estate, in contrast with the doom and gloom of the residential housing market. Likewise, property group CIFI Holdings posted a 23% year-on-year drop in home sales in China for the first half, but reported a 69.5% lift in its property investment revenue. A judge let New York ban guns in 'sensitive' locations, but called the underlying law legally 'doomed.' Gun lobbies are fighting the NY law, enacted after a June Supreme Court decision expanded gun rights. The law bans guns in "sensitive" places like Times Square, parks, theaters, and houses of worship, and re-tightens concealed carry permit restrictions that had been loosened by the Supreme Court in June. Germany and Denmark have struck a deal to boost offshore wind power capacity in the Baltic Sea. The wind parks are expected to generate three gigawatts — enough for up to 4.5 million households. The deal also includes a 292-mile subsea cable that links Bornholm's wind parks to the German grid in a bid to reduce the region's reliance on Russian gas and oil. The infrastructure to connect the wind parks will cost $3 billion, while $6 billion would be needed to bolster the wind parks, Bloomberg reported, citing the Danish government. China holds the largest share in the world's offshore wind market, having raised its offshore wind capacity to 27.7 gigawatts in 2021, per the GWEC.
