Democrats, who represent most of those areas, fiercely objected at the time, accusing the GOP of using tax policy to wage a culture war. Schumer has vowed that if he’s still majority leader next year he will ensure the SALT cap expires at the end of 2025. I am glad to hear that former President Trump now feels the same way,” Lawler wrote on X. “Donald Trump and Mike Lawler, who helped elect him, are the reason we even have a limitation on the SALT deduction. The anti-debt Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projected that eliminating the SALT cap would raise the cost of extending the 2017 tax law by $1.2 trillion.

Russian disinformation peddlers are producing videos targeting the Harris-Walz campaign with false and disparaging claims, Microsoft said Tuesday. At least three Russian disinformation actors have been working to denigrate the Harris-Walz campaign, Microsoft said. Some of the disinformation comes in the form of two videos that have been disseminated since late August, Microsoft said. NBC News has viewed an upload of that video posted to X, which Microsoft confirmed is the alleged Russian disinformation. The report comes after the U.S. accused the Kremlin of running a multifaceted disinformation campaign to boost former President Donald Trump and disparage Harris.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center will stop accepting unclaimed bodies following an NBC News investigation that documented how the Fort Worth program cut up and leased out the remains of poor people for training and research without consent from the dead or their families. The move was prompted, she said, by documents uncovered while responding to reporters’ public-records requests about the center’s Willed Body Program. Among the revelations were “a lack of sufficient controls and oversight” of how outside companies handled and used corpses provided by the Health Science Center. Trent-Adams said leadership had been unaware that the body program was routinely shipping unclaimed remains — including those of U.S. military veterans — across state lines. The NBC News investigation published Monday found the center had received about 2,350 unclaimed bodies from Tarrant and Dallas counties in the past five years.

The vote was 51-44, falling short of the 60 needed to break a filibuster, with Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine again voting with Democrats in favor of the bill. Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., dismissed it as “another show vote” and vowed that “Republicans support IVF, full stop.”“This is not an attempt to make law. She predicted that Democrats would “lift the filibuster” to get around the 60-vote requirement, which would require 50 senators to vote to change the rules. But a series of data points showing worsening economic conditions has made some analysts believe a 0.5% cut is more likely — and perhaps even necessary. “We do not seek or welcome further cooling in labor market conditions,” Fed Chair Jay Powell said in a speech last month. “A (0.5%) cut is usually done in emergencies,” like the Covid-19 pandemic, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s financial group. Mortgage interest rates have hit their lowest level since February 2023, while auto loan rates are also falling. A 0.5% cut would more directly affect rates tied to the fed funds rate, including credit cards, home equity lines of credit and small-business loans.

GLAAD, the LGBTQ media advocacy organization, has released its 12th annual Studio Responsibility Index tracking films released during 2023. Despite “a huge increase in LGBTQ characters who were front and center in their own narratives,” the study found the number of films with LGBTQ characters dropped in 2023. The survey looked at 256 films from 10 major distributors and their subsidiaries and streaming services. Those 70 films included 170 LGBTQ characters, of which 46% were characters of color, representing an increase of 6% from the 2022 study. If LGBTQ representation continues to decline in major releases, these companies will lose relevance with a crucial buying audience.

WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson said the House will vote Wednesday on a six-month stopgap funding bill linked to legislation requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote — the same package he abruptly pulled off the floor last week amid growing GOP opposition. Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, spent the weekend calling members and trying to flip GOP defections to the yes column. "Mr. Speaker Johnson, you know as well as everyone else that your plan is a no-go as currently written. A six-month CR with poison pills is not going to fly in a narrowly divided government," Schumer said. "If the hard right thinks that we will willingly give them leverage to ram Project 2025 down the American people's throats early next year by agreeing to a six-month CR, they are dreaming," he added.

Israel has a new war goal, adding to mounting signs that the conflict could soon expand to the country's north as it warned the U.S. that “military action” would likely be the only way to addressing mounting hostilities with Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Noam Galai / Getty Images fileIt added that the defense minister and a number of other senior Israel Defense Forces officials "presented the IDF's operations against Hezbollah forces" to Hochstein. The U.S. and others have voiced fears that an expanded military operation from its ally could spark a broader regional war. Third-party candidates have played a big role in deciding key presidential battleground states in the last few years — meaning which (and how many) candidates will actually be on the ballot state by state could matter a lot in a close election. After spending millions to get on state ballots, Kennedy has attempted to pull back since endorsing former President Donald Trump. And there are still other third-party candidates, including some familiar faces and some new ones, whose presence on key state ballots could affect the November results. In 2016, 6% of all voters cast votes for third-party candidates, a dynamic that helped to lower the share of the vote Trump needed to win in key battleground states. But this is where third-party candidates’ battleground ballot access efforts stand at the moment.

The revelations about Ryan Wesley Routh emerged Monday, a day after a Secret Service agent rousted him from a hiding place at the West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course where Trump had been playing. Trump was on the fifth fairway and not in Routh’s line of sight when the agent “engaged” the suspect, said Ronald Rowe, acting director of the Secret Service. In 2002, court records show, Routh was convicted of illegally possessing a machine gun. Court records for a person named Ryan Routh also show a 2003 divorce, along with multiple civil judgments after contractors and individuals sued a roofing company he helped run. Routh disparaged Trump as a “fool” and a “buffoon,” but he credited him for reaching out to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

WASHINGTON — Congress is considering boosting funding for the Secret Service after what the FBI called an apparent second attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life in 10 weeks. "Nobody's going to want to deny the Secret Service the funding that it needs as long as it justifies it." And Sen. The National Hurricane Center calls it Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 and said in forecast updates that the front will weaken as it travels over terrain overnight. Similar volunteer weather stations at other coastal locations, including at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point in Southport, reported more than 14 inches of rain, the weather service said. A National Weather Service forecaster said that it was too soon to say whether the amounts were record breakers but that the weather service office in Wilmington is likely to have that answer late Tuesday morning. A flash flood event was confirmed in the community of Kelly, about 38 miles inland from Wilmington, the weather service said. The disturbance was 45 miles west of Cape Fear and traveling north-northwest at 7 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory.

Washington CNN —Joe Biden’s national security advisers have no imminent plans to present the president with an updated proposal in the Israel-Hamas war ceasefire negotiations, two senior administration officials told CNN – the latest indication that talks to end the conflict have seriously stalled. Some US officials had indicated in recent weeks that a so-called bridging proposal was being finalized for Biden’s approval before being shared with the other mediators involved in the ceasefire talks, such as Qatar and Egypt. The recent execution of six hostages in Gaza – including one Israeli American – infuriated administration officials who have been intimately involved in the talks. Meanwhile, there has also been growing skepticism in Washington about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political willingness to end the war. Facilitating an end to the Israel-Hamas war before he leaves office is one of the most important foreign policy priorities for Biden.
