Then union members will get additional $4-per-hour raises every year during the life of the six-year tentative deal. The union had been willing to consider the $4-an-hour deal before the strike, union boss Harold Daggett said on the picket line outside the Port of New York and New Jersey early Tuesday, soon after the start of the strike. Thursday’s deal likely is the end of the strike, but it doesn’t close the door on a new strike in the future. Should the members vote against the deal, the strike might start once again. But union members voted nearly unanimously to reject it and have remained on strike since September 13.

Shares of Moller-Maersk slumped more than 8% on the Friday market open as European shipping companies fell on the conclusion of a U.S. port strike. Maersk shares pared losses slightly to trade down 7.05% by 9:05 a.m. London time. “It also makes you a lot nicer to be around.”Cutting out social media and screen time altogether may be too much to ask. And because social media algorithms are designed to hold your attention, negative content that grabs you will keep getting pushed to you, Armitage said. On the other hand, if you are getting sucked into email, social media or news, you are getting rolling before you’ve had a chance to plan your day mentally, Rutledge said. By starting the day without social media, you might also get a boost from increasing your sense of agency over the kinds of content you are consuming — rather than letting social media pull you into a mindless scroll, Rutledge said. “By doing these things you are taking control of your phone rather than your phone controlling you,” Armitage added.

In a speech to Congress, also on Tuesday, with López Obrador sitting a few steps from her, the promises seemed more tangible. Experts said Mexico would not be able to increase oil production using traditional methods, because its fields are getting tapped out. Carroll had little interest in cruises, but a writing retreat aboard the Queen Mary 2 intrigued her. The solo travel part wasn't out of character — I'd spent most of my 20s backpacking alone. It was this writing retreat — with its promise of expert instruction plus time to focus — that enticed me to get on board a ship. I was hoping that a writing retreat would reignite that spark. Laura Gio CarrollAs it turned out, the writing cruise went swimmingly (despite my never once going swimming while aboard).

Liverpool, ENGLAND — British defense officials are vying to secure more funding as Finance Minister Rachel Reeves' upcoming Autumn budget risks exacerbating already beleaguered efforts to boost military investment. Maria Eagle, the U.K.'s minister of defense procurement, joined a chorus of voices that called on the sector to prove that it could be more efficient under the new government, as the Treasury grapples with allocating its stretched finances. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has cast a spotlight on deep inefficiencies within Britain's defense sectors, provoking calls for reform. A 72-page House of Lords report published Thursday last week warned of "burdensome bureaucracy" in military recruitment and "cumbersome" procurement processes. Unless "laser-sharp priorities" are set, even 2.5% might not be enough to meet the country's defense needs, it said, adding that the government must acknowledge the essential need for higher defense spending and communicate that to the public.

Researchers have now used DNA analysis to uncover just how long ants have been farming fungi, now described in a study published Thursday in the journal Science. To trace the evolution of this relationship between ants and fungi, Schultz and his colleagues built complex family trees. Using the DNA from 475 species of fungi, including 288 species known to be cultivated by ants, the researchers pieced together how all these organisms are related. The study team did the same thing for 276 species of ants, including 208 species of fungus farmers. Ants began farming fungi 66 million years ago after an asteroid hit Earth, according to a new study.

The widening conflict in the Middle East threatens to crimp growth and stoke inflation, experts say.
