Trump in liberal San Francisco for high-dollar tech fundraiser
  + stars: | 2024-06-06 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
(Photo by Eva Marie Uzcategui/Getty Images)Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will attend a fundraiser hosted by two tech venture capitalists in San Francisco on Thursday, a high-dollar event expected to draw Silicon Valley investors turned off by the Biden administration's policies. Trevor Traina, a San Francisco-based tech executive and former Trump ambassador to Austria, said business regulations implemented during Biden's presidency had alienated some people in the tech industry. Trump's campaign raked in record amounts after the guilty verdict last week, and the San Francisco event will add to his coffers. Vance, a potential running mate for Trump who previously lived in San Francisco and worked in venture capital, will attend the event, according to a source familiar with his plans. San Francisco remains a fertile fundraising ground for Democrats.

The next wave of Disney theme park expansion in the U.S. is primed to be in California rather than Florida. The decision requires Disney to put a minimum of $1.9 billion in theme parks, lodging, entertainment, shopping and dining within 10 years. In Florida, Disney has had a more difficult time navigating the political landscape — leading to Disney World development tie-ups. In its fiscal 2024 second quarter , Disney's Parks & Experience division, which includes theme parks, resorts, cruises, hotels, and consumer products grew sales by nearly 10% to $8.93 billion and operating income by more than 12% to $2.29 billion. "Comcast's exposure to, and reliance on the Theme Parks segment is about to expand dramatically," according to MoffettNathanson.

An article in the school's student paper that included Coughlin's purported remarks. Coughlin, first elected student body president in 1989, had the power to appoint a new senator. That led another student senator to accuse Coughlin of discriminating against the student on the basis of his sexuality, at which point the student paper quoted Coughlin in February as saying he was "homophobic." In the guest column he wrote two weeks later, Coughlin sought to straighten things out, saying he had appoint another student because of his previous service in student government. The future state lawmaker would go on to lose reelection as student body president that spring, owing in part to the controversy.

AdvertisementHomosexuality isn't illegal in Egypt, but the country is famous for its discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. "Not all states have equal protection laws, especially for transgender and gender-diverse individuals," John Tanzella, president and CEO of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, told Business Insider. Airbnb hosts can indicate they're LGBTQ-friendly in their listings, and there are companies and entire cruise lines dedicated to gay travel. Perhaps the most comprehensive is the IGLTA, which has been helping members of the community travel safely since 1983. "The future of LGBTQ+ travel is bright," Tanzella said, though he cautioned significant hurdles still remain.

Americans didn’t need a reason to feel more cynical about politics. But New York Gov. She said she had become concerned that the program could hurt Manhattan’s economic recovery from the pandemic. But Hochul is the one who has been issuing glowing news releases about how New York State has already achieved “full economic recovery,” including Manhattan, and any economic effects of the pricing plan are nothing new, having been hashed out for years. The more likely reason, as Politico reported, is that Democratic officials, including the House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, are worried that starting the program now could hurt Democratic chances in competitive House races this November.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the former government scientist both celebrated and despised for his work on Covid, is set to return to Capitol Hill on Monday for a reunion with some of his fiercest antagonists: members of a Republican-led House panel who accuse him of helping to set off the worst pandemic in a century. Republicans on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic have spent 15 months rooting through emails, Slack messages and research proposals for evidence against Dr. Fauci. In half a million pages of documents and more than 100 hours of closed-door testimony, the panel has so far found nothing linking the 83-year-old immunologist to the beginnings of the Covid outbreak in China. But the panel has turned up emails suggesting that Dr. Fauci’s former aides were trying to evade public records laws at the medical research agency he ran for 38 years until his retirement in December 2022. Some of those emails paint Dr. Fauci as being preoccupied with his public image; one April 2021 message from an aide said that while Dr. Fauci “prides himself on being like teflon,” he appeared to be “getting worried about the brown stuff hitting the fan” over questions about research funded by his agency, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

In “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” he is brooding, combative and ambitious, sure — but we are equally encouraged to root for him. Despite Dietrich’s protestations, the creators of “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” seem to side with their muse. Parisian fashion in the 1970s was, “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” suggests, a scene broadly gatekept by a handful of squabbling men. "Becoming Karl Lagerfeld" intends to plunge the viewer into the heart of 1970s Paris, Monaco and Rome, to "follow the formidable blossoming of this complex and iconic personality," say the show notes. “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” is, stylistically, a luxurious tribute to ‘70s flair: gorgeous to look at and offering an aggressively humanized look at some of fashion’s biggest names.

In fact, for him at least, one is not about the other; Seinfeld openly disdains politics. Like Seinfeld, Carolla imagines parts of the 20th century as a better time. Women got more jobs and power (despite, Carolla writes, being “better at home with the kids than in the workplace”) and men became metrosexuals. The masculinity they defend is adamantly heterosexual, threatened not just by women but also by gay men and gender non-confirming people. In fact, the call for a return to 1950s-style masculinity has found a number of high-profile political supporters in recent years.

The glue pizza search result was traced back to a comment from a Redditor who went by "fucksmith" making an obvious joke on the subreddit r/Pizza. Because I'm both brave and a genius, naturally, I had to try to make the glue pizza myself. Was Google's response to tamp down its big AI search ambitions just because a few jokesters on X made silly queries? The ridiculousness of those AI answers does call into question the entire concept of using AI for Google search results. And I like to convince myself that my eating glue pizza was part of the noise that prompted Google to act.

CNN —CNN Opinion asked our contributors to weigh in on Trump’s conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Are there really that many voters whose view of Trump as a man, or politician, could be altered by bookkeeping irregularities? How many would-be Trump voters will be swayed against him because of miscategorized business expenses? Instead of validating Trump’s narcissism, Democrats should turn the camera away from Trump and toward the American people. Democrats should make the case that Trump’s policies would decimate the middle class and that ought to be a (metaphorical) crime.

CNN —Pope Francis has apologized for using an anti-gay slur during a meeting with bishops. The 87-year-old pontiff reportedly made the homophobic remark in a closed-door meeting last week as he told Italian bishops that gay men shouldn’t be allowed to train for the priesthood. “As he (Pope Francis) has said on several occasions, ‘in the Church there is room for everyone, everyone! Francis’ comments were made in the context of proposals from the Italian bishops to amend guidelines on candidates to seminaries. The Vatican said on Tuesday that Pope Francis “extends his apologies” after reports that he had used an offensive slang word referring to gay men at what was intended to be a private meeting with 250 Italian bishops last week. Francis had been taking questions from Italian bishops meeting for their annual assembly on a number of issues when the question of whether or not to admit openly gay men into seminaries, or priesthood colleges, came up. According to several people present at the meeting, who spoke anonymously to Italian media, Francis stated a firm no, saying that seminaries were already too full of “frociaggine,” an offensive slang term referring to gay men. “Pope Francis is aware of articles that recently came out about a conversation, behind closed doors,” said Matteo Bruni, the press office director for the Holy See, in response to questions from reporters. “The pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who were offended by the use of a term, reported by others.”
