In the year since a teenage gunman strode into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde and killed 19 fourth graders and two teachers, the building has stood empty, its windows boarded over, its students dispersed to other campuses with little chance to maintain the bonds they once shared. That was poised to change on Saturday, as residents of the small town in South Texas prepared to break ground for a new elementary school in place of the one that became the scene of one of the worst school mass shootings in American history. “The new school, it’s a symbol of moving forward. The silver was Canada's first medal in women's beach volleyball at a Pan Am Games. A silver medal came with a bonus prize with every fighter in the finals having secured a quota spot for the Paris Olympics. In the women's 75-kilogram Canada's Tammara Thibeault added Pan Am gold to her world and Commonwealth Games titles with a unanimous 5-0 decision over Panama's Atheyna Bylon. "Out of all the tournaments I've been to, I've been able to capture gold and I was missing Pan Ams," said Thibeault. That contribution helped power Mexico into second place on the medal table with 35 gold and 80 total medals.

Meanwhile, House Republicans are pushing for a full plate of 12 separate funding bills to keep agencies running until Sept. 30, 2024, the end of the fiscal year. This rare feat requires close negotiation between the narrowly Republican-controlled House and the Senate, which has a two-vote Democratic majority. But the fiscal warfare between the Senate and conservative House Republicans that has raged since January is unlikely to end soon. Significant changes by Congress to Biden's request for aid to Ukraine and more money for border security were anticipated. Republicans attack Biden's border security spending, saying it falls far short in shutting down illegal border crossings and the flow of drugs such as fentanyl.

The suspect, Pedro Argote, 49, was wanted for murder in the death of Judge Andrew Wilkinson of the Maryland Circuit Courts, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland said in a statement. Mr. Argote was found during “an expanded evidentiary search” around Williamsport, Md., less than 10 miles from the state’s northern border. It was not immediately clear how Mr. Argote had died. Spain to create emergency accommodation for 3,000 migrants

REUTERS/Borja Suarez/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMADRID, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Spain said on Thursday it would create additional emergency accommodation for 3,000 undocumented migrants in military barracks, hotels and hostels amid a 55% jump in arrivals by sea this year, which has triggered political tension. Escriva declined to disclose how many additional beds will be created, but a ministry source told Reuters it would be around 3,000 in total. But this time the central government's approach has been to expand emergency accommodations across the country, hoping to ease pressure on the Canaries. Following police screenings, migrants will be placed in the military barracks, hotels, hostels and other types of accommodations on a voluntary basis, the ministry source said. Escriva argued the situation was well-handled and manageable, and said some conservative politicians were whipping up what he called xenophobic rhetoric.

On Tuesday morning, few meteorologists were talking about Tropical Storm Otis. At that time, forecast computer models didn’t show much to be concerned about. By Sunday evening, the computer forecast models were still not showing much. This is why meteorologists often preach that a computer model isn’t a forecast — forecasters create forecasts, they like to say. On Monday evening, with Otis still a tropical storm, satellite images revealed a little feature that could mean that the storm was about to intensify very quickly.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A low-key lawmaker in Congress for less than a decade, new House Speaker Mike Johnson isn’t recognizable to most Americans. But the social conservative and devoted ally of former President Donald Trump has been a quiet force within the Republican conference he now unexpectedly leads. “A friend to all and an enemy to none,” Republican conference chairwoman Elise Stefanik said when nominating Johnson ahead of the speaker vote Wednesday. A constitutional lawyer and former member of the Louisiana state House, Johnson was first elected to the U.S. House in 2016. Among the more conservative members of the GOP conference, Johnson has consistently opposed a woman’s right to abortion — “we will get the number of abortions to ZERO!

The agreement came after acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with Sumar leader and acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz on Monday. Sanchez requires the support from Sumar's 33 lower-house lawmakers - as well as from other parties, including some advocating for Catalan and Basque independence - in his bid to renew his term as premier. While Sumar's support is crucial, it is not enough to secure Sanchez's investiture in the lower house. He still needs the backing of Catalan separatists, who are demanding an amnesty law to mass pardon people involved in the region's failed independence bid of 2017. MADRID (AP) — The parties forming Spain’s acting government said Tuesday that they will push for a 37½-hour workweek as part of an agreement the coalition partners struck as they try to remain in power following an inconclusive election in July. Now, the government wants to move toward a shorter workweek like in neighboring France, where the workweek is 35 hours. The proposal is for Spain to have a 38½-hour workweek next year and for that to fall to 37½ hours in 2025. Spain’s Socialist Party and its junior coalition partner, the leftist Sumar (Joining Forces), have until Nov. 27 to earn the backing of the majority of Spain’s Parliament to form a new government. ___This story has been corrected to show that Spain’s governing party and its junior coalition partner have until Nov. 27 to try to form a government, not Nov. 21.

An off-duty pilot who was in a jump seat in the cockpit of an Alaska Airlines flight on Sunday has been charged with more than 80 counts of attempted murder after he tried to disrupt the engines, prompting the plane to divert to Portland, Ore., the authorities said. Flight 2059, operated by Horizon Airlines, an Alaska Airlines regional subsidiary, left Everett, Wash., around 5:23 p.m. and was headed to San Francisco when it reported “a credible security threat related to an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot who was traveling in the flight deck jump seat,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement on Monday. “The jump seat occupant unsuccessfully attempted to disrupt the operation of the engines,” Alaska Airlines said in the statement, adding that the captain and first officer “quickly responded, engine power was not lost and the crew secured the aircraft without incident.”A pilot told an air traffic controller that the man had tried to cut the plane’s engines, according to an audio recording posted on LiveATC.net, which shares live and archived recordings of air-traffic-control radio transmissions.

Representative Jim Jordan was brought down by the revolt of the rule followers. They believed that installing Mr. Jordan, a hard-right Ohioan and political brawler, would reward colleagues who had played dirty in unseating Speaker Kevin McCarthy and undermining the candidacy of Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana. It particularly galled them that Mr. Scalise, the No. 2 Republican, defeated Mr. Jordan, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, in the initial party vote to choose a replacement for Mr. McCarthy only to then watch Mr. Jordan’s allies immediately pivot to denying Mr. Scalise the speakership on the floor. The anti-Jordan lawmakers then found themselves under a withering social media attack from the right and confronting violent threats against them and their families for balking at voting for Mr. Jordan.

Aside from McCarthy and Jordan, Republicans have also rejected their No. That plan would give more authority to Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, who is filling the speaker's chair on a temporary basis.
