A handful of states, including Texas and Nevada, have set up dedicated systems designed to restore tenants to their homes after an illegal lockout. She and her family still don't have a new apartment, she said, and the eviction cases on her record don't help. BI reviewed two years' worth of lockout cases from the department and found city lawyers routinely dismissed tickets, often without documenting why. Bridget Bennett for Business InsiderThat afternoon, Brown had three cases on his docket in which tenants were alleging they'd been illegally locked out and dozens of cases in which landlords were seeking formal evictions. In 2022, Miami-Dade County passed a tenant's bill of rights that underlines the illegality of lockouts and limits a landlord's ability to harass tenants.

Read previewVice President Kamala Harris is in a difficult position. My guess is some fairly unsophisticated people are calling up Kamala Harris saying: 'Can I do this? Al Sharpton told The New York Times of Harris' dual roles of supporting Biden while also proving her own ability to lead. "But that is complicated by the fact that she is the vice president and is also running for elective office as the vice president," Atkeson added. Atkeson then explained that Harris' decision to support Biden despite growing doubts about his physical and mental capacity puts her in a compromising position.

When comparing personal wealth data with homeownership, a curious pattern emerges: Many states with high homeownership rates have lower income levels and vice versa. According to Federal Reserve data, West Virginia’s average personal income of $52,585 per capita is the second-lowest in the US. However, despite its relatively low personal income levels, it has the highest homeownership rate of all 50 states, at 77%, according to US census data. Mississippi—the only state with a lower average personal income than West Virginia—has the third-highest homeownership rate in the country. Even West Virginia, which counts three out of every four housing units in the state as owner-occupied, isn’t insulated, Sansalone said.

At The Wall Street Journal's Global Food Forum in June, Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald's US, detailed the company's missteps in meatless burgers and salads. Over the years, McDonald's has been able to fold in some noncore items — namely, coffee and chicken. It's not just consumer demand that's keeping McDonald's menu limited to the more-traditional, less-than-body-boosting items — it's its franchisees, too. Rather than sparking typical cheer on Wall Street, Elliott's campaign, spelled out in a 50-page presentation, led to confusion and concern among investors and customers. Several activism experts pointed to two of Elliott's past targets for insight into the hedge fund's strategy for Southwest: Suncor Energy in 2022 and Marathon Petroleum in 2019. Elliott partner John Pike, who is now leading the Southwest campaign, was involved in the firm's actions at both energy companies. Pike and portfolio manager Bobby Xu are leading Elliott's Southwest campaign. But in 2018, a few months after reaching an agreement with Elliott, Marathon announced it was only getting bigger.

Around 8 in 10 people infected with West Nile virus don’t show symptoms. These symptoms can often be confused with those of other viruses, so the majority of West Nile cases are never diagnosed. The CDC’s tally for West Nile cases this year is likely an undercount, since several states have reported additional human cases in recent weeks. Raman said he’s worried about more West Nile transmission during monsoon season in the Las Vegas area, which is expected to start soon. Southwest Airlines said Wednesday that it has adopted a shareholder rights plan, more commonly known as a "poison pill," in response to activist Elliott Management's investment in the airline and push to oust CEO Bob Jordan and Chairman Gary Kelly. The poison pill will only activate if Elliott — or another investor — acquires at least 12.5% of the company. "Southwest Airlines has made a good faith effort to engage constructively with Elliott Investment Management since its initial investment and remains open to any ideas for lasting value creation," Kelly said in a statement. Elliott and Southwest management met in person just two weeks ago, according to people familiar with the matter. Companies often adopt shareholder rights plans in response to an activist threat; rental car company Hertz adopted a poison pill in 2013 in response to "unusual" trading activity that management thought presaged an activist.

The tabletop simulation presented a hypothetical scenario in which cities like Dallas, Washington, DC, and Madrid were at risk of a large asteroid impact. "A large asteroid impact is potentially the only natural disaster humanity has the technology to predict years in advance and take action to prevent," Lindley Johnson, a NASA planetary defense officer emeritus, said in a press release. That's because they didn't think Congress would approve funding for a critical space mission to study the asteroid "unless impact became certain," NASA's summary said. Options for preventing an asteroid impact include shooting the asteroid with lasers, launching a nuclear bomb at it, or simply smacking a space probe into it to nudge it away from Earth. Participants weren't sure Congress would fund the mission unless the asteroid was a certain threat — not a 72% chance of threat.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

Southwest Airlines cuts revenue forecast

A Southwest Airlines jet is parked Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Kehole awaiting passengers on January 20, 2024 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Southwest Airlines shares fell roughly 4% in premarket trading Wednesday after the carrier cut its second-quarter revenue forecast, citing changing booking patterns. Southwest still expects record quarterly operating revenue in the second quarter. Airlines are raking in record numbers of passengers but higher costs and growth in capacity have weighed on fares and profits. "The reduction in the Company's RASM [revenue per available seat mile] expectations was driven primarily by complexities in adapting its revenue management to current booking patterns in this dynamic environment," Southwest said in a filing.
