Just weeks after becoming Poland’s culture minister, in 2015, Piotr Glinski began a yearslong effort to shift his country’s cultural life toward the political right. He ousted liberal museum directors, replacing them with conservatives. He created new institutions to celebrate traditional culture and nationalist heroes. Many artists and cultural leaders opposed Glinski’s actions, and there were protests throughout his term, including outside Poland’s National Museum after a leader he had appointed removed sexually suggestive artworks from the walls. Pawel Sztarbowski, the deputy director at the Powszechny Theater, in Warsaw, said that Glinski had tried to “return Poland to an imaginary past.”

Polish President Andrzej Duda speaks as he attends the military parade on Armed Forces Day, celebrated annually on August 15 to commemorate Poland's victory over the Soviet Union's Red Army in 1920, in Warsaw, Poland, August 15, 2023. President Andrzej Duda, an ally of PiS, said before the election he would give the first shot at forming a government to the largest single party. "After consultations and deep consideration, President Andrzej Duda has made a decision regarding the so-called first step (of appointing a government). Despite all the other parties in parliament ruling out a coalition with PiS, Morawiecki has said he still intends to try and form a government. If Morawiecki were tasked by Duda with forming a government but proved unable to win a vote of confidence in parliament, the chamber would then appoint another prime minister.

A senior Haitian police official was shopping at his local supermarket on a recent weekday when someone caught his eye: the country’s most wanted man. The official, Ernst Dorfeuille, recognized Joseph Félix Badio, a former military officer who had focused on drug and corruption cases at the interior and justice ministries, immediately because he had once worked with him. Now Mr. Badio was a fugitive, the target of a warrant seeking to question him about the key role the police say he played in an infamous crime: the assassination of Haiti’s president, Jovenel Moïse, in July 2021. Mr. Dorfeuille summoned help, and within minutes, four police officers armed with assault rifles arrived and detained Mr. Badio as he was about to drive away from the supermarket outside Haiti’s capital.

CNN —As Israel continues its fourth week of intense bombardment of the besieged Gaza strip, huge crowds of protesters have gathered to call for a ceasefire in Washington, D.C. as well as in other capital cities around the globe. In addition to an “immediate ceasefire,” the protesters are also calling for an end to US military aid to Israel and an end to the blockade on Gaza. Israeli authorities have rebuffed calls for a ceasefire, saying no ceasefire would be possible until all hostages are freed. Since the trial began in late September, Trump has been fined twice by Judge Arthur Engoron for breaking a gag order that bars him from making public comments about the judge’s staff, stormed out of the courtroom and been made to watch as two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, testified this week. His daughter Ivanka Trump is slated to testify on Tuesday. Both sons held the title of executive vice president after their father was elected president. Eric Trump, who maintained more direct involvement in the company, provided more detailed testimony and was at times chippy in his responses to prosecutors who sought to tease out his specific role. During testimony on Friday, he acknowledged he was aware of the Trump Organization's statements of financial condition as far back as 2013 after repeatedly denying knowledge of them.

Many civil society leaders told CNBC the order does not go far enough to recognize and address real-world harms that stem from AI models — especially those affecting marginalized communities. "One of the thrusts of the executive order is definitely that 'AI can improve governmental administration, make our lives better and we don't want to stand in way of innovation,'" Venzke told CNBC. Mitchell wished she had seen "foresight" approaches highlighted in the executive order, such as disaggregated evaluation approaches, which can analyze a model as data is scaled up. Even experts who praised the executive order's scope believe the work will be incomplete without action from Congress. For example, it seeks to work within existing immigration law to make it easier to retain high-skilled AI workers in the U.S.

After eight years of pumping out vitriol against opponents of Poland’s governing party, state-controlled television has rallied to an unlikely new cause: a free media and fair play. Unsettled by the election this month of a new Parliament controlled by political forces it previously vilified, Poland’s main public broadcaster last week set up a telephone hotline as part of what it described as a “special campaign to defend media pluralism” and counter “increasingly frequent attacks on journalists.”The abrupt about face by a public broadcaster notorious for its often vicious, one-sided coverage reflected Poland’s febrile political atmosphere as loyalists of the defeated Law and Justice party scramble to keep their jobs by presenting themselves as victims of persecution and of a compromised election. That loyalists have much to lose as a result of the Oct. 15 vote was made clear last week when Gazeta Wyborcza, a liberal newspaper, published a long list of journalists and other Law and Justice supporters who “will have to say goodbye to their positions” in media, state corporations and other state-controlled entities. The list has since been expanded as readers send in the names of more people they want gone, too.

Israel's name is omitted on digital maps by Chinese tech companies, the Wall Street Journal reported. AdvertisementAdvertisementIsrael's name is conspicuously absent from maps on the Chinese internet, according to the Wall Street Journal. Internet users in China observed that Chinese tech companies Alibaba and Baidu removed the name Israel from their online maps despite still showing its internationally recognized borders, the report said. But in a statement to The Telegraph, Baidu spokesman Jing Meng denied deliberately omitting Israel from the platform's maps. "Users can find corresponding countries or areas on Baidu Maps by simply using the map's search function," he added.

Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey had a problem — and, prosecutors say, an opportunity. And as New Jersey’s senior senator, Mr. Menendez was in a position to help, by recommending the next leader of the office overseeing the case. In early 2021, Mr. Menendez urged President Biden to nominate a lawyer he knew well as the state’s next U.S. attorney: Esther Suarez, a politically connected prosecutor in his home county. When White House and Justice Department officials interviewed Ms. Suarez, they found her knowledge of federal law lacking, and they had substantial concerns about her qualifications, according to four people familiar with the sessions. Mr. Menendez pushed for Ms. Suarez to be given another chance, the people said.

Late last month, a federal appeals court granted the Alliance’s motion to temporarily block the Fearless Fund from awarding grants exclusively to Black women entrepreneurs. Black business leaders told CNN the lawsuits, if successful, could stand to undo decades of progress toward leveling the playing field for Black and brown people in the workplace and small business sector. According to a 2019 report from American Express, Black women are the fastest growing demographic of entrepreneurs in the country. NEW YORK (AP) — Tens of thousands of books are being banned or restricted by U.S. prisons, according to a new report from PEN America. In its report, PEN found parallels between the frequency of prison bans and book bannings in schools and libraries. Texas, another frequent site of library bannings, had more than 10,000 prison book bans, second only to Florida. "Prison book programs have mostly tried to raise awareness locally when prisons implement new censorship restrictions for communities they serve," the report reads. There are two pivotal events that seem to have ignited the new era of solidarity between some young American activists and the people of Palestine. The first came in the form of Palestinian activists expressing support on social media for the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Mo., which activists describe as an uprising, not just a series of protests. Around that time, a small delegation of Palestinians even traveled to Ferguson and St. Louis to meet with American activists. It called back to a time when an American figure as notable as Malcolm X spoke out for the Palestinian cause. Even activists who didn’t make these journeys describe coming to this cause in part through personal connections with Palestinians and Palestinian Americans.

First, the ride-hailing pay calculations used by researchers, drivers, and companies can vary considerably — some don't fully account for the expenses and hours that impact a driver's profits. Second, drivers' pay can fluctuate based on how often they drive, their vehicle's expenses, and how well their customers tip. Haiti and the Dominican Republic together make up the island of Hispaniola. Theirs has been a history splintered with xenophobia, colorism and violence that has seethed into the present day. Haiti’s government said its farmers need the water to grow crops, while Mr. Abinader claims it will divert water needed by Dominican farmers. The border closures reinforced the dangerous nativist Dominican rhetoric Mr. Abinader and his government have deployed in their efforts to contain Haitian immigration.
