TAIPEI — The U.S. Coast Guard is watching an “uptick” in Chinese and Russian navy activity around Alaska and the northern Pacific but encounters to date have been very professional, a senior commander said on Friday. “Russian naval vessels, certainly we’ve seen an uptick in their presence in that particular region. And then what we also see is an uptick in PLAN, the PRC Navy, and the Russian navy working together in that region,” he said, referring to the People’s Republic of China. Tiongson said the U.S. Coast Guard had not been asked to provide escort to Philippine vessels, but had been advising and assisting in other ways. “So when I say advise and assist, we provide to the Philippine coast guard and to others is what we would do in this situation.

Gold and silver prices retreated on Friday from record highs, but were positioned for weekly gains on growing anticipation of another bumper U.S. interest rate cut this year, as markets awaited a key inflation report for additional guidance. Gold and silver prices retreated on Friday from record highs, but were positioned for weekly gains on growing anticipation of another bumper U.S. interest rate cut this year, as markets awaited a key inflation report for additional guidance. Silver prices surged due to bullion's strong performance and China's stimulus measures, though some analysts warn that the rally may fade due to concerns over industrial demand. The Federal Reserve's larger-than-usual half-percentage-point reduction last week ignited a rally in gold, which hit consecutive record highs and has gained about 1.8% so far this week. Gold prices are currently supported by anticipated U.S. Fed interest rate cuts and China's stimulus measures, both of them are weakening the dollar, said Kyle Rodda, financial market analyst at Capital.com.

The strike in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the U.N., vowing that Israel's campaign against Hezbollah would continue. The Israeli army spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said it targeted the main Hezbollah headquarters, located beneath residential buildings. Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said four buildings were reduced to rubble in the blast, so powerful it rattled windows and shook houses some 30 kilometers north of Beirut. Israel has moved thousands of troops toward the border in preparation. At the U.N., Netanyahu vowed to "continue degrading Hezbollah" until Israel achieves its goals, further dimming hopes for an internationally backed cease-fire.
