New York CNN —Univision will not fact check Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump on stage during their respective town halls, the Spanish language network confirmed to CNN. A TelevisaUnivision spokesperson told CNN the fact checking decision was not a condition for any candidate’s participation. Fact checking has become a major sticking point during the 2024 election, with both Trump and his running-mate Sen. J.D. Acevedo’s interview with Trump in November stunned many inside and outside the network for its softer approach and lack of fact checks. “These town halls are offering Latino voters an unprecedented opportunity to talk to the candidates.

Delta reports a profit despite service meltdown

That was partly offset from a $50 million fuel savings due to the grounded flights. Delta said it earned adjusted income of $971 million in the quarter, down 26% from a year earlier, on adjusted revenue of $14.6 billion in the quarter, essentially unchanged from a year ago, despite the hit to revenue from the service meltdown. But that was offset by a 3% increase in miles flown by passengers, as passengers soon returned to travel on Delta despite the service problems. And it reported a 9% drop in average fuel prices paid, the second largest cost at the airline behind labor costs. “I think you’re going to see it across consumer discretionary purchases as a whole,” “People want to find out what happens.

The Nobel committee just entered the AI chat
  + stars: | 2024-10-10 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
When asked by a reporter whether the committee took the AI connection into consideration when judging the nominees, one member on the chemistry committee basically brushed off the question and insisted the decisions were made purely on the science. The Nobel committee letting politics or PR weigh on their decisions? At first glance, it could seem like the Nobel committee has been gulping down Big Tech’s AI Kool-Aid. While gesturing to generative AI, Wong noticed that no one mentioned ChatGPT or Gemini or any other consumer-facing AI tools that companies are peddling. Similarly, in announcing the chemistry prize on Wednesday, committee members talked a lot about amino acid sequences and structural biochemistry.

Ikea revenue falls after it lowered prices
  + stars: | 2024-10-10 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
New York CNN —Last year, Ikea slashed prices on roughly 2,000 products to give inflation-weary customers a break. Ikea, the world’s largest furniture retailer, said that it doesn’t have any regrets about prioritizing “lowering the prices” in a $2 billion discount initiative at all of its stores globally. Like its rivals, Ikea gradually hiked prices since the peak of Covid-19 in 2020 as the costs of materials and transport rose. The company’s major discount program last year cut prices on several of its most popular items, like its Billy bookcase. Ikea sold 1.2 billion meatballs for the year, with a company spokesperson telling CNN that it also sold more meals at its cafés.

The event featured models of the robotaxi as well as a Robovan, a driverless vehicle designed to carry a larger group of people or items. TeslaBut the delay seemed to matter little to the in-person crowd waiting for the chance to ride in the 50 self-driving vehicles that were cruising around the studio lot. Tesla has long offered what it calls Full Self-Driving or FSD, currently priced at $8,000, as an option on its cars. Musk has insisted that the company’s data shows that FSD is already safer than cars driven by humans. ‘Overly optimistic’This is certainly not the first time that Musk has laid out ambitious time frames for his plans for self-driving cars.

New York CNN —Federal Communications Commission chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel denounced former President Donald Trump’s “threats against free speech” Thursday after he attacked CBS and called for the network to “lose its license” over a recent “60 Minutes” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. In recent days, the former president has lambasted the Harris interview, accusing CBS News of editing the sit-down with correspondent Bill Whitaker. “As I’ve said before, the First Amendment is a cornerstone of our democracy.”Trump’s attacks on CBS comes after he backed out of his own “60 Minutes” interview last week and has repeatedly fended off invitations from television networks, including CNN and Fox News, for additional debates, instead opting for sit-downs with right-wing media outlets. Following ABC’s Trump-Harris debate in September, Trump dialed into “Fox & Friends,” where he called for the Disney-owned network to have its license “take[n] away.”Rosenworcel’s statement is the second time this week she has spoken out in support of broadcasters. On Tuesday, the FCC chairwoman issued a statement calling threats from Florida’s Health Department to prosecute local TV stations over an abortion rights ad “dangerous,” and emphasizing that pressure from the state government “undermines the fundamental principle of free speech.”

New York CNN —Elon Musk and Tesla have pledged a game-changing moment in the company’s history Thursday night. For the last decade, the electric vehicle maker’s CEO has vowed that true self-driving cars from Tesla were right around the corner. The network said the town halls will take place before a live audience of persuadable and undecided voters from Pennsylvania. Harris quickly accepted the invite, but Trump repeatedly shrugged it off, despite the Harris campaign’s attempts to goad him into participating. In reality, the data — no matter how bad or good — probably won’t make an ounce of difference for most voters. Most voters likely don’t even follow the overall economic trends, let alone one month’s data, he said. Instead, their views on the economy are shaped by how far their dollars are stretching today compared to recent times. I think he handled himself and showed the world and modeled what civil discourse is. New York CNN —The cost of a Mega Millions ticket is more than doubling, but the multi-state lottery game is promising that the bigger price comes with better odds. It’s the second time the price of a ticket has increased in Mega Millions’ 22-year history: In 2017, the price jumped from $1 to $2 — the same cost of a Powerball ticket. That’s also when Mega Millions adopted its current format of choosing six total numbers from two different pools – and when all the numbers match, including the gold Mega Ball, the player wins the jackpot. Mega Millions said that the increased ticket price will cause larger-starting jackpots, as well as faster-growing jackpots. That’s hurting french fry suppliers like Lamb Weston. This shift has taken a toll on Lamb Weston because people are less likely to cook french fries at home. Around 80% of french fries consumed in the United States come from fast-food chains, according to Lamb Weston. McDonald’s has launched a $5 meal, which includes a McDouble cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, small french fries, 4-piece chicken nuggets and small soft drink. “Many of these promotional meal deals have consumers trading down from a medium fry to a small fry,” Lamb Weston CEO Thomas Werner said last week on an earnings call.

Google’s search dominance is unwinding

New York CNN —Google is so synonymous with its core product that its name is a verb that means “search.” Yet Google’s dominance of that market is shrinking. For the first time in decades, Google next year will not control a majority of the US search market, according to a forecast by advertising research firm eMarketer. Google will remain the biggest search player, maintaining a 48% share of American search advertising revenue. That ruling could result in the eventual breakup of the company’s search business. But as we wind down 2024, one thing appears clear: The naysayers on Team Hard Landing got it wrong. The “soft landing” versus “hard landing” metaphor — perhaps overused but visually handy — refers to the economy as an airplane and the Fed as the pilot. Pull the right levers at the right time, and you get a nice comfortable soft landing, with inflation cooling and the labor market thriving. He was far from alone in thinking that a soft landing was little more than a fantasy. “We should just drop the soft landing versus hard landing discourse and start talking about a robust expansion at mid-cycle,” Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, told Schwab Network in an interview.
