The first round of Medicare drug price negotiations has come to an end – but we still don't know the final prices that the U.S. government and pharmaceutical companies have agreed on. They all maintain that Medicare drug price negotiations are a long-term threat to the pharmaceutical industry's drug innovation and profits, but the immediate dust has somewhat settled. That's based on executive commentary during the recent quarterly earnings calls of Bristol Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson , among other companies. Novartis CEO Vasant Narasimhan said on July 18 that the short-term impact from Medicare drug price negotiations "might be manageable on our first set of drugs." Executives at each of the drugmakers similarly emphasized their opposition to Medicare drug price negotiations on their respective earnings calls.

The landmark case from the government, filed in 2020, alleged that Google has kept its share of the general search market by creating strong barriers to entry and a feedback loop that sustained its dominance. Last summer the hot-pink feminism of “Barbie” took more than $1 billion at box offices worldwide. In Italy, however, “Barbie” was beaten by another film, a feminist dramedy with a clear nod to Italian neorealism set in postwar Rome. The film presents a monolithic patriarchy which the women bear stoically and symbolically counter, at the end — spoiler alert — by voting. At least part of the answer lies in the fact that “There’s Still Tomorrow” is a safe film set in a very binary world. The plot follows Delia, a woman devoted to her family and dominated by her violent, sexist husband, Ivano, himself the son of a violent, sexist father.

The same Chinese brokers who were laundering fentanyl proceeds were now heavily involved in marijuana trafficking across the U.S. as well. Since 2023, federal prosecutors have charged at least 31 people linked to Chinese groups accused of laundering cartel drug money. In the ensuing months, the team began to understand for the first time how the Chinese became the Mexican cartels’ go-to money launderers. The Chinese money brokers then arrange for the cartels to receive the equivalent amount in pesos or cryptocurrency in Mexico.
