Deutsche Bank shrugs off basket-case mantle

Some alighted on Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), the erstwhile whipping boy of European banking. True, the bank’s total deposits fell by 29 billion euros, or roughly 5%, between Dec. 31 and March 31. In Banco Santander’s (SAN.MC) European business, customer deposits also fell roughly 5% over the same period. Meanwhile, three-quarters of corporate banking deposits either have a fixed term or are used as part of the customers’ operations, making them stickier. Deutsche, previously the basket-case of European banking, was always a likely target for investors hunting for the next weak link.
Stubborn Germans leave EU budget reform in a fix
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BRUSSELS, April 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The European Commission’s efforts to appease fiscal hardliners have not yet opened doors for a badly needed reform of the bloc’s fiscal rules. Specifically, Germany does not like a proposal to allow the Commission new flexibility to negotiate budget targets with European Union countries. Although current debt rules have never been enforced – because required cuts would be too punitive to work – Berlin likes their semblance of objectivity. But in the absence of a new system, it will have to go through the motions for 2024, and possibly beyond. Even though that’s less stringent than the current system, France already says it’s too rigid, and Italy wants more exceptions for green investment.
Eli Lilly races rising obesity expectations
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, April 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The race is on between Mounjaro’s growth and investors’ burgeoning hopes. The drug made by Eli Lilly (LLY.N), which was approved in May to treat diabetes, reaped an astonishing $569 million of revenue in the first quarter less than a year after it was approved for sale. The results encouraged Lilly to raise its annual profit guidance by 3.5%. The pharmaceutical firm also unveiled alongside its earnings release on Thursday that the drug had its second successful large clinical trial against obesity. With another successful trial under Lilly’s belt, Mounjaro is likely to receive an official green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in obesity, and more insurers will subsidize the cost.
Kirin investors find vitamin deal hard to swallow

The $15 billion Japanese company is best known as a brewer, but sources more than half its top line from other businesses. Kirin, led by CEO Yoshinori Isozaki, also reckons the deal will be accretive to earnings per share in the first year. Yet investors immediately wiped some $450 million off the purchaser’s market value on Thursday, almost double the premium it agreed to pay Blackmores’ shareholders. Blackmores may yet show Kirin has adopted a better dealmaking regimen, but investors aren’t holding their breath. NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand, April 25 (Reuters) - Four times a day, Thai conservationist Watchiradol Phangpanya puts on a black, long-sleeved shirt, red gloves, and a red balaclava, hoping to imitate an endangered red-headed vulture feeding its baby. [1/3] A new born red-headed vulture is pictured at Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo, Thailand, April 15, 2023. As a scavenger, the red-headed vulture used to play a crucial role in the ecosystem by consuming animal carcasses. After nearly two decades of trying to increase the red-headed vulture population, the zoo is starting to see results, with another egg being incubated by its parents in conservation. "We would like to see the Asian king vulture soar once again through the skies of Thailand," he said.
CNN —Testing of over two dozen melatonin “gummies” sold as sleep aids found some had potentially dangerous amounts of the hormone that helps regulate sleep, according to a new study. “Four of the tested products contained levels of CBD that were between 4% and 18% higher than on the label,” Cohen said. “We choose gummies over other products because we thought parents would chose edibles to give to their children,” Cohen said. Gummies sold as sleep aids had much higher levels of melatonin than stated on the label, as well as CBD, according to the study. “However, that doesn’t mean melatonin products are going to work or they’re a good idea to take.
As emergency doctors, here are seven longevity snacks we eat to stay healthy, full and energized all day:1. HummusChickpeas, the main ingredient in hummus, are high in fiber and a great source of plant-based protein. Studies have found that adding it to your diet can help protect against heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. A 2016 study found that eating more monounsaturated fat reduced the risk of premature death due to disease, compared with eating more carbohydrates. Olives are often soaked in brine, and over time, snacks high in salt can lead to increased blood pressure.

Scientists said on Tuesday they detected uracil and niacin in rocks obtained by the Japanese Space Agency's Hayabusa2 spacecraft from two sites on Ryugu in 2019. Scientists long have pondered about the conditions necessary for life to arise after Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago. "It was directly sampled on the asteroid Ryugu and returned to Earth, and finally to laboratories without any contact with terrestrial contaminants." The U.S. space agency NASA during its OSIRIS-REx mission collected samples in 2020 from the asteroid Bennu.

A luxury trailer in the Montauk Shores community sold for a record-breaking $3.75 million, which is $5,000 per square foot. In 2022, there weren't any properties for sale in the Montauk Shores community of the Hamptons, New York, but that didn't stop one mystery buyer from making a record-breaking purchase. The trailer is located in Montauk Shores, an oceanfront community in the Hamptons. Since the trailer is in the Montauk Shores residential community, the sale includes access to swimming pools, a recreational center, a playground, and a basketball court. This unit is 150 square feet smaller than the one that sold for $3.75 million.
According to the vending entrepreneur Marcus Gram, younger people use vending machines more than other age groups. "Students have access to the vending machines in their dorms 24/7 and even late at night for classes," he said. "Breaks aren't typically long enough for people to go to the store, so they turn to the vending machine." "If you have lashes inside of the vending machine at a hotel, it doesn't necessarily mean that that's going to sell," she said. AirportsAirports have a lot of foot traffic and therefore more opportunity for your vending machine to be visited by travelers.

While imitation crab is more affordable than real crab, it doesn't have as much nutritional value. Once imitation crab hit the markets in the late '70s, it became wildly popular as an affordable alternative to crab meat. Yet while real crab packs a major protein punch, imitation crab doesn't have quite as much nutritional value. Imitation crab contains little or no real crab. Brian Vander Brug / Contributor / Getty ImagesThe rising costs of crab have made imitation crab a more appealing option for many shoppers.
Eskom's former CEO plans to "lay low" and go abroad for a while after cyanide poisoning. De Ruyter alleged corruption in South Africa's government in an explosive interview last week. He described the incident in greater detail in his TV interview, saying his personal assistant had served him instant coffee because the coffee machine at Eskom's headquarter was being repaired. Since De Ruyter was appointed as CEO in 2019, he has tried to clamp down on corruption in the energy sector. He also pointed to South Africa's governing party, the African National Congress, for the power shortages saying "it's a little bit like a Venn Diagram."
Vending machines can be a lucrative side hustle for entrepreneurs looking to earn passive income, especially as economic experts warn of a recession this year. According to the vending entrepreneur Marcus Gram, younger people use vending machines more than other age groups. "Students have access to the vending machines in their dorms 24/7 and even late at night for classes," he said. "Breaks aren't typically long enough for people to go to the store, so they turn to the vending machine." Kohl's shares sink after big holiday-quarter losses
  + stars: | 2023-03-01 | by ( Melissa Repko | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Kohl's shares sunk on Wednesday after the retailer posted a big loss and a sales decline of about 7% in the holiday quarter. Kohl's is not the only retailer that has felt a pullback as consumers spend more on food, housing and other necessities. During that same three-year period, spending at Kohl's fell by 15.4% and profit at the company plummeted by 203%. Kohl's inventory remains elevated, up 4% year over year as of the end of the fourth quarter, the company said. As of Tuesday's close, Kohl's stock is up about 11% this year, outperforming the approximately 3% gain of the S&P 500.
Survivors could farm mushrooms on dead trees, or eat rats and insects. In order to survive, he says, people would need to adopt sunlight-free agriculture — cultivating mushrooms, rats, and insects. Vincent Kessler/ReutersWhile we're using the wood to grow mushrooms, we could use the dead trees' leaves, too, he said. Dead trees can feed other life forms, like rats and insectsRats, much like mushrooms, can digest cellulose, the sugar that makes up 50% of wood. So anything the mushrooms leave behind could be fed to the rats, Walsh suggests.
Almond milk and other plant-based drinks can be labeled "milk," the Food and Drug Administration said. But if they do, they should explain the nutritional differences between their plant-based milk and cow's milk, the FDA said. It also recommends that plant-based milk makers include a statement on their label clarifying the differences between their product and cow's milk. "We applaud FDA's recognition that consumers understand the difference between plant-based milk and cow's milk and that shoppers choose to purchase plant-based milk specifically because it is not cow's milk," Madeline Cohen, senior regulatory attorney at the Good Food Institute, which advocates for plant-based brands, said in a statement. The National Milk Producers Federation, which represents the US animal milk industry, said the proposed guidance would allow plant-based companies "to continue inappropriately using dairy terminology."
A property in the Hamptons' famed Montauk Shores trailer park is poised to sell for $3.75 million. The current most expensive trailer in Montauk Shores sold for $1.85 million in 2022. Montauk Shores counts hedge-fund manager Dan Loeb and Vitamin Water cofounder Darius Bikoff as residents. If the $3.75 million deal goes through, it would beat the park's sales record by nearly $2 million — surpassing the record set by a $1.85 million sale in 2022. Gold currently reps another property in Montauk Shores, a neighboring trailer pictured here that's on the market for $2 million.

Autism rates tripled among children in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area from 2000 to 2016, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Pediatrics. Although there is no medical test for autism, the CDC has established a network of 17 sites across the country that estimate autism rates based on a combination of formal medical diagnoses and records from schools and health care providers. Nationally, the rise in autism rates has been similar to the trend in New York and New Jersey, according to a 2021 CDC report. But there’s probably more to the story: Genetic factors, and perhaps some environmental ones, too, might also be contributing to the trend. Beyond the improvements in diagnostics, genetic factors could be driving up autism cases on their own, experts said.
