The toll of confirmed storm-related deaths climbed to 27 in Buffalo and the rest of Erie County on Monday, from 13 the night before. The fatalities included cases of people found in snow banks and in cars or who had died from cardiac stress while plowing or blowing snow, county executive Mark Poloncarz said. The greater Buffalo region, on the edge of Lake Erie near the Canadian border, was hardest hit. "It doesn't make a lot of economic and business sense for them to acquire a battery...which would almost double the cost of the bike," said Steve Juma, the co-founder of electric bike company Ecobodaa. EXPANSION PLANSEcobodaa is just one of several Nairobi-based electric motorcycle startups working to prove themselves in Kenya before eventually expanding in East Africa. "We're putting over 200 swapping stations in Nairobi and expanding to Dar es Salaam and Kampala," said Hurst-Croft.

Some 65,000 people died of starvation and disease or in the gas chamber at the camp in Stutthof, near Gdansk in today's Poland. Furchner was wheeled into court wearing a cream-coloured winter coat and beret, and with a blanket over her lap. "Only a secretary, you might say, but the role that even a secretary had back then in the bureaucracy of a (concentration camp) is a significant one," Wantzen said.
Russia's Transneft receives Polish and German requests for oil

The EU has pledged to stop buying Russian oil via maritime routes from Dec. 5, with Western nations also imposing price caps on Russian crude oil, but the Druzhba pipeline remains exempt from sanctions. And now we have received requests from Polish consumers: give us 3 million tonnes next year, and 360,000 tonnes for December, and Germany has already submitted a request for the first quarter," Transneft head Nikolay Tokarev said on Tuesday. Transneft, which handles more than 80% of total oil produced in Russia, has cranked up oil exports by a fifth this year, he added. Tokarev also said that oil supplies via the southern spur of Druzhba, which transports oil through Ukraine to Slovakia and the Czech Republic, will remain unchanged next year thanks to a ssanctions exception. Exports via the far eastern port of Kozmino are expected to total 42 million tonnes this year, exceeding usual annual capacity of 30 million tonnes, Tokarev said.
EU countries vote to weaken law on methane emissions

The law will be negotiated next year by EU countries, who approved their negotiating position on Monday, and the European Parliament. EU countries said companies should check their infrastructure 12 months after the law takes effect, and then carry out checks on numerous timelines. Alongside the United States, the EU leads the Global Methane Pledge of 150 countries aiming to cut methane emissions 30% by 2030. The EU law would not apply to infrastructure abroad that transports gas into Europe. The EU imports more than 80% of its gas, and most methane emissions associated with that consumption occur abroad.
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday identified three industrial stocks that he believes are worth owning next year, saying he expects them to outperform the sector's top performers in 2022. The best-performing industrial stocks in the S&P 500 so far this year have been Northrop Grumman , Lockheed Martin and Deere — up 36.9%, 35.6% and 25.7%, respectively. Looking ahead, though, Cramer said he'd prefer to own the likes of Caterpillar , Illinois Tool Works and railroad operator CSX . Illinois Tool Works shares are down more than 12% in 2022 because fears of an economic slowdown have trumped the company's actual results, Cramer contended. Transports such as CSX — down nearly 16% year to date — are "totally hated" on Wall Street, Cramer acknowledged.
CVS Health's director of organized retail crime investigations testified to Congress in 2021 about the topic. According to the National Retail Federation, organized retail crime incidents jumped 26.5% on average in 2021. In congressional testimony, he said organized retail crime-related events are reported in a CVS Pharmacy store every three minutes. He had personally investigated organized retail crime for over 30 years. "Let me just be clear about what organized retail crime is not.
LIMA, Peru — A judge ordered ousted Peruvian President Pedro Castillo to remain in custody on Tuesday, denying his appeal as authorities build a rebellion case against him. The judge said evidence suggests Castillo was intercepted as he tried to reach the Mexican embassy to seek asylum. He was taken into custody shortly after he was ousted by lawmakers when he sought to dissolve Congress ahead of an impeachment vote. Regional governments have also refused to recognize her as Peru’s president. Peru’s prime minister, Pedro Angulo, in a statement rejected the four governments’ position, which he attributed to an “ignorance of reality.”
Human composting — or, as it’s sometimes referred to, natural organic reduction — fulfills many people’s desire to nurture the earth after dying. In its place, Ms. Spade founded Recompose, a new for-profit company designed to bring human composting to the public. I have no stake in Recompose or any other human composting company.) Human composting, by Recompose’s reckoning, uses just an eighth of this energy and falls in total price between cremation and conventional burial at around $7,000. Human composting reframes the dead body: not something to be protected from nature and the elements, but something meant to return to them.
US rail workers are preparing to strike over their latest negotiations with management. Three years of rail workers' negotiations with management over this issue could soon culminate in an economy-disrupting strike, after the latest tentative agreement included just one paid personal day off a year. That's too far from the 15 days of paid sick leave that rail workers pushed for, and which railroads argue would cost them $688 million a year. While praise for essential workers has faded, rail workers still hold a lot of power in the economy. "The stockholders would go absolutely crazy if we were able to strike for one day."
Brenntag’s U.S. swoop is both logical and risky
  + stars: | 2022-11-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Nov 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - German chemical distributor Brenntag (BNRGn.DE) is eyeing $5 billion U.S. rival Univar Solutions (UNVR.N). A deal would offer the $10 billion group scale in a fragmented market, and greater exposure to North America. A deal would offer synergies and scale, and give Brenntag more exposure to North America. That market may be more resilient to Europe’s energy crunch, and it made up nearly 70% of Univar sales in 2021. And given the healthier U.S. market, there’s a risk Brenntag gets stuck in a bidding war – or ends up overpaying.
The interest rate on her operating note doubled this year and will be higher in 2023. Now, his interest rate is 7.35%, and he expects it could reach 8% by year’s end – a 142% increase in eight months. "It's easier to get financing when interest rates are cheap because [banks] are willing to take more risk," said a CNH Industrial dealer representative, who declined to be named. In separate statements, Deere and AGCO said interest rates they offer depend on loan terms, borrower creditworthiness and equipment type. CNH Industrial said interest rates for larger equipment are lower than rates for smaller machinery.
A letter signed by Airlines for America, Boeing (BA.N) Airbus (AIR.PA), Embraer (EMBR3.SA), aviation unions and others backed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) request to mandate an extension of mitigation by wireless carriers as airlines retrofit radio altimeters. FAA acting Administrator Billy Nolen urged a delay in some 5G C-Band transmissions from smaller operators over aviation safety concerns. The aviation industry letter said that since January "the FAA has documented over 100 FAA incidents of potential 5G interference ... The FAA and White House did not immediately comment. The aviation letter Tuesday said "inter-agency government progress appears to be at a stalemate, while stakeholders are doing their part to address these issue."
The delivery and quality of the live broadcast experience are now more vital than ever. Broadcast connectivity partner Tata Communications leveraged its substantial expertise to rise to the challenge. "The brilliance of the F1 broadcast is that the viewer never has to think about the technology. Aside from F1, Tata Communications also partners with numerous other sports and entertainment franchises. Tata Communications' new broadcast model has delivered around a 34% reduction in the organization's travelling freight, which has lessened the environmental impact.
Beyond Catastrophe A New Climate Reality Is Coming Into View By David Wallace-WellsYou can never really see the future, only imagine it, then try to make sense of the new world when it arrives. (A United Nations report released this week ahead of the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, confirmed that range.) A little lower is possible, with much more concerted action; a little higher, too, with slower action and bad climate luck. There were climate-change skeptics in some very conspicuous positions of global power. New emissions peaks are expected both this year and next, which means that more damage is being done to the future climate of the planet right now than at any previous point in history.
Every inpatient bed at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago has been full for more than six weeks. Many of the patients at Comer Children’s have RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, which can cause lung infections. Some hospitals are sending ICU patients directly home once their cases are no longer acute, rather than to another floor. Dr. Kevin Messacar, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said his hospital is accepting patients from five nearby states. But suctioning can be tricky for parents, according to Dr. Elizabeth Schlaudecker, an infectious disease specialist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

The walkouts over wage increases as Europe's cost-of-living crisis deepens have caused thousands of fuel stations to run dry. Workers at TotalEnergies' Donges refinery voted to end their strike on Wednesday. But one in five fuel stations face supply difficulties, with the number higher in the Paris region. Drivers are running out of diesel as they search for open fuel stations. Delays have resulted in a small number of contracts being cancelled, she said, speaking at her office in Mitry-Mory, east of Paris.
