Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap, is nearly 50% off its all-time high. The ETH/BTC ratio, a sentiment indicator reflecting the relative value of ether compared with bitcoin, is at its lowest level since April 2021. "Bitcoin has a very well established use case, which is a store-of-value currency," said Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant. Some investors had hoped ether could compete with bitcoin, whose rate of supply growth slows every four years after the halving. However, ether supply has been rising at a fast pace this year, and is on track to resume its pre-Merge levels in the next three months, according to CryptoQuant.

You could theoretically defer capital gains taxes indefinitely if you continued exchanging for what the IRS calls "like-kind properties." That's what part-time real estate investor Steve Lewis, who bought his first property in 2000 and expanded to three rentals before selling in 2024, found when he attempted a 1031 exchange. Then, you must close on the replacement property within 180 days of your initial property sale. While his failed 1031 experience may be "rare," he noted, "there are so many things that could delay a closing." Lewis says he'd consider a 1031 exchange in the future if the 180-day rule were extended to a year.

Bitcoin ATMs are a rapidly growing presence in the United States and, some experts say, a rapidly growing cybercrime menace. So, while a cash ATM tucked away between the snack cakes and energy drinks at a gas station may not draw much attention, a bitcoin ATM gets more scrutiny from bad actors. But in addition to old tricks, there are newer threats bitcoin ATMs introduce that cash ATMs do not face. Although the bitcoin ATM isn't exactly drawing crowds, Patel says a surprising number of senior citizens show up at the kiosk, alarming given the rise of bitcoin ATM scams targeting seniors. Basic steps to avoid bitcoin ATM scamsTo protect against these scams, users should be cautious and skeptical of any request to pay through a bitcoin ATM.

Pavel Durov, chief executive officer of Telegram, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016. The boss of messaging platform Telegram said late Thursday that charges against him by France are "misguided," in his first public comments since being detained in the country nearly two weeks ago. He cannot leave French territory and has to report twice weekly to a police station, prosecutors said last week. In his first public comments on the situation, Durov said Thursday that France's decision to detain and charge him was based on a "misguided approach. "Using laws from the pre-smartphone era to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages is a misguided approach."

Hong Kong CNN —The operator of 7-Eleven has rejected an opening offer from the owner of convenience store rival Circle K, indicating the bid was too low and that its global business was worth more. In a statement Friday, Tokyo-based Seven & I Holdings, which owns 7-Eleven, said it was “open” to “sincerely consider” any proposal that is in the best interests of its shareholders. The Financial Times reported on Thursday that Seven & I was open to the possibility of a higher offer from its suitor. Shares in Seven & I have rallied since the news of the offer broke last month, pushing its market value above $38 billion. Although 7-Eleven traces its origins to Dallas, Texas, it was the late Japanese entrepreneur Masatoshi Ito who is credited with turning it into a ubiquitous global brand.

Stern told KABC the "odd" order did raise suspicion, largely because her bakery primarily specializes in occasion cakes and cookies with edible flowers, not cupcakes. Stern told the outlet the bank informed her that if the funds cleared, which they later did, the check was probably legitimate. Airlines flooded the U.S. with flights this year, driving down fares particularly in the domestic market, where low-cost carriers concentrate, and weighing on carriers' revenue while costs have gone up. Spirit Airlines , JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines last posted annual profits in 2019, while larger carriers have returned to profitability. Now, some of those same airlines are dialing back their growth plans and deferring deliveries of new aircraft. Some airlines, like Frontier, have been active in sale-leasebacks, in which they sell planes to generate cash and lease them back.

That's because the National Flood Insurance Program — the government-sponsored public insurance program that is the largest flood insurer in the U.S. — needs to be reauthorized by Sept. 30 to continue to issue new policies or increase coverage on existing policies. "There are very few private insurers that offer any type of flood insurance," said Daniel Schwarcz, a professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School who focuses on insurance law and regulation. In that report, from 2011, it estimated a one-month NFIP lapse could affect about 40,000 closings. "There is no need to take the risk that the flood insurance program will lapse when you could close ahead of Sept. Then in 2021, FEMA implemented Risk Rating 2.0, a new pricing system that would accurately reflect the cost of an area's risk.
