New York CNN —A day after an E. coli outbreak tied to Quarter Pounders in the western part of the United States left one dead and 10 hospitalized, McDonald’s entered full damage-control mode. “We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC’s “Today” Wednesday. Most of the illnesses are in Colorado and Nebraska, and most of the people who fell ill ate Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s. “If there has been contaminated product within our supply chain, it’s very likely worked itself through that supply chain already.”McDonald’s (MCD) stock fell more than 5% at Wednesday — its worst day since the March 2020 Covid lockdown. Chipotle’s outbreak is the worst-case scenario for any restaurant chain, and McDonald’s E. coli situation appears to be limited, at least for now, to a supply issue.

WASHINGTON — A Donald Trump supporter who federal authorities say built a giant pro-Trump billboard that the mob of Trump supporters used as a battering ram against police officers during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was arrested on Tuesday. Israel had a right to retaliate, and the fact that Hamas refuses to stop fighting gives Israel the right to continue fighting. The nightmare of Gaza was started by Hamas and can be finished by Hamas. The nightmare of the West Bank is another story, and there is much blame to be placed on Israel. The politics of the United States is in the middle of this problem, and there is no easy way to deal with it.

The Vessel, the honeycomb-shaped tower in Manhattan which closed in 2021 after a series of suicides, reopened Monday with added safety features. The U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who built a powerful Islamic movement in Turkey and beyond but spent his later years mired in accusations of orchestrating an attempted coup against Turkish leader Reccep Tayyip Erdogan, has died. Since the failed coup, his movement has been systematically dismantled in Turkey and its influence has declined internationally. (Applicants must first exhaust their state unemployment benefits.) Plus, disaster jobless benefits are available to many types of workers who don’t qualify for state unemployment insurance, such as gig workers, farmers and the self-employed. Still, it can be difficult for the newly jobless to secure either state or disaster unemployment benefits, particularly those whose homes and businesses have been heavily damaged or destroyed by storms. It took Miranda Escalante five days to apply for unemployment assistance.
