Agriculture is responsible for more than 10% of global carbon emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. But while agriculture is a massive carbon offender, it could now be part of a solution, as startups are trying new ways of using nature to save itself. Startups like Lithos, UNDO Carbon and California-based Eion are experimenting with several types of carbon-absorbing rocks that can accomplish what lime does while permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere at the same time. "We apply a rock dust onto farms, and that helps farmers condition the soil or make the soil better for improvements," said Anastasia Pavlovic, CEO of Eion. "Then over time, that manages to secure and sequester carbon, permanently removing it from the atmosphere."

The international poverty line, which the U.N. uses to measure global poverty, is very low. The international poverty line is valuable because it has succeeded in drawing the world’s attention to the extreme poverty of the world’s very poorest people. But to end poverty in all its forms everywhere, studying this poverty line alone is not enough. One way to see whether this higher poverty line is reasonable is to check whether it aligns with established national poverty assessments. For this, we need an appropriately ambitious poverty line that receives the same attention as the low international poverty line.

U.S. home buyers are gaining tens of thousands in purchasing power as mortgage rates drop. The findings are based on the monthly payment for a median-priced home in the U.S., a 20% down payment and a 6.2% mortgage rate. The analysis applied the same method to each of the 100 largest cities, calculating how much extra buying power homebuyers have in each local market compared with last year. Here are the 15 metro areas where buying power has increased the most based on 6.2% and 6% mortgage rates. The Australian dollar hovered close to its highest level of the year on Tuesday, with the central bank set to hold policy steady later and traders focused on any hints of potential near-term easing. The yen edged up to 143.45 per dollar, but remained close to the center of its September range of 147.20 to 139.58, a more than one-year peak reached on Sept. 16. The yen has retreated amid waning bets for aggressive tightening by the BOJ, particularly after governor Ueda struck a cautious tone of Friday, saying the central bank would spend some time monitoring global growth risks. The relatively rare high-level press conference was scheduled after the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates last week. That kicked off an easing cycle that theoretically gives China's central bank further room to cut its rates and boost growth in the face of deflationary pressure. Pan became PBOC governor in July 2023. He then told reporters in March, alongside China's annual parliamentary meeting, there was room to cut the RRR further. China's government system also means that policy is set at a far higher level than that of the financial regulators speaking Tuesday.

The funds target distributions equal to six times the dividend payouts on the Nasdaq-100 Index and four times the S & P 500 dividend, respectively. The idea behind the Pacer funds is that the funds will capture more of that upside during market rallies, according to Sean O'Hara, president at Pacer ETF Distributors. The QDPL's website currently shows a distribution yield of 5.79%, or more than four-times the roughly 1.3% dividend yield on the S & P 500, according to YCharts.com. The dividend futures could also see bigger gains if more companies in the index decide to start paying dividends. To be sure, the dividend futures contracts could also decrease in value during times of economic stress.

New York CNN —Coca-Cola is discontinuing the production of its new Spiced flavor just six months after the soda hit shelves, marking the end of a disappointing attempt to attract younger drinkers. “As part of this strategy, we’re planning to phase out Coca-Cola Spiced to introduce an exciting new flavor in 2025,” a spokesperson said. The short lifespan of Spiced Coke is surprising, because the company promoted it as a permanent flavor. Coca-Cola introduced Spiced Coke in February with a splashy ad campaign. The beverage blended the traditional Coke flavor with raspberry notes.

That was obviously a bad idea, and since then, we've spent a century and a half honing the art and science of promotions. To study promotions, the researchers conducted a series of clever experiments. But in other groups, managers were selected based on their own preferences. What did much better at predicting good managers was intelligence, as measured by a common IQ test. "Don't think, well, they like to talk, and therefore they're going to be a good manager."

CNN —New York Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, one of the GOP’s most endangered House incumbents, reportedly gave both his lover and his fiancée’s daughter part-time jobs in his district office on Long Island, a potential violation of House ethics rules. D’Esposito is locked in a tight rematch with Democrat Laura Gillen, whom he defeated by fewer than 10,000 votes two years ago. D’Esposito maintained he will “absolutely” continue his race for reelection “and win.”Both his fiancée and lover, in brief conversations with the New York Times, confirmed the reporting. GOP Rep. New York CNN —A year ago, Caroline Ellison was preparing to testify against her former boss and ex-boyfriend in one of the biggest fraud trials in US history. Ellison, who ran Alameda, pleaded guilty to seven federal counts of fraud and conspiracy shortly after FTX’s collapse. A jury last year convicted former crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried on multiple counts of federal fraud and conspiracy. Over three days on the stand, Ellison, who is 29, repeatedly reinforced that throughout her years at Alameda, the buck stopped with Bankman-Fried. While sentencing is entirely up to Judge Kaplan’s discretion, legal experts say it’s highly unlikely Ellison will end up in prison.

New York CNN —The US Justice Department filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing Visa of illegally monopolizing the debit card market. The antitrust suit is one of several major actions taken by the Justice Department recently. It also comes just three years after the Justice Department sued to block Visa from merging with financial technology startup Plaid. According to the new complaint against Visa, which was filed in federal court in New York, more than 60% of debit transactions in the country take place on Visa’s debit network. Visa, in turn, is able to charge more than $7 billion in processing fees on those transactions, the department says.

Rare earth elements, such as lanthanum, neodymium and terbium, are critical for helping the world break its long, destructive relationship with planet-heating fossil fuels. These materials — so-called rare earths — are not actually that rare but can be challenging to extract as they are often found in low concentrations. They wanted to understand whether this was “a geological accident, or is there something inherent about those iron-rich volcanoes that makes them rich in rare earth elements?” Anenburg told CNN. Pilot Knob National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri, a former iron-ore mine, could also hold rare earth elements. Some experts have suggested there should be more of a focus on recycling rare earth elements rather than mining.

September consumer confidence falls the most in three years
  + stars: | 2024-09-24 | by ( Jeff Cox | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The board's Consumer Confidence Index slid to 98.7, down from 105.6 in August, the biggest one-month decline since August 2021. By contrast, the index had a reading of 132.6 in February 2020, a month before the Covid pandemic hit. "Consumers' assessments of current business conditions turned negative while views of the current labor market situation softened further. Consumers were also more pessimistic about future labor market conditions and less positive about future business conditions and future income," said Dana Peterson, chief economist at The Conference Board. The last time the confidence index dropped more came as inflation was just beginning a climb to what ultimately was the highest level in more than 40 years.
