CNN —The USA Basketball Men’s National Team survived a late Australia fightback in an underwhelming 98-92 victory in an Olympic warmup game on Monday. But when Australia missed chances to reduce the deficit further, back-to-back three-pointers from Tyrese Haliburton sealed the USA win. Not that it’s often mattered, though, with Team USA winning seven of the eight men’s basketball gold medals on offer since professionals were able to participate for the first time at Barcelona 1992. “We stopped playing mid third quarter and started turning the ball over,” Team USA coach Steve Kerr said, per the NBA. For Australia, the defending Olympic bronze medalist, Jock Landale scored a game high 20 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists in a standout performance.

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff will lead the delegation to the closing ceremony on August 11, the White House said in a statement. Biden is also expected to attend some Olympics events during her trip to Paris, a White House official said. Jill Biden remains the president’s closest adviser and fiercest protector, wielding influence in the White House and campaign. However, USA Basketball has made a “terrible decision,” according to CNN Sport analyst Christine Brennan, by omitting a phenomenon like Clark from the roster. Breanna Stewart, a two-time WNBA champion, Brittney Griner, a nine-time All Star and A’ja Wilson, a two-time MVP, have all represented Team USA at an Olympic Games before. “She’s the biggest thing in sports, not just women’s basketball in the United States,” Brennan said of why Clark should be included. CNN —Three-time Olympic champion Gabby Douglas has ended her bid to represent Team USA in Paris this summer after withdrawing from this week’s Xfinity US Gymnastics Championships in Texas. In an interview with ESPN, Douglas said despite the setback, she wasn’t planning on giving up on a future Summer Games run. Before that, she had last competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Douglas kept a low profile after the Games in Rio, taking a break from social media to do some “soul searching,” CNN has previously reported. Douglas won two golds during her Olympic debut in 2012, including in the all-around event, and added a team gold at the Rio Games in 2016.
