A man wearing a Diego Maradona t-shirt walks by the Argentine Central Bank on November 30, 2023 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Data published Tuesday by the country's statistical office showed that Argentina's 12-month inflation rate through February rose to 276.2%, reaffirming Argentina's position as having the world's worst inflation. Hanke said that in 1999 he had drafted a law at the request of former President Carlos Menem that would have dollarized Argentina's economy. Advocates of dollarizing Argentina's economy say the switch could help the country tame skyrocketing inflation and bring an end to its boom-and-bust cycle. Ecuador and Panama are two notable examples of countries that have previously dollarized their economies, but no country of Argentina's size has previously shifted to the U.S. dollar.

A startup backed by Peter Thiel has released the "first AI software engineer." A little-known startup called Cognition Labs stunned software engineers this week when its team of coding whizzes unveiled what it calls "the first AI software engineer." AdvertisementHowever, Cognition's AI software engineer appears to have an aptitude that's a notch above. Of course, the startup has been pretty careful with how it presents its AI software engineer. These reactions are understandable at a time when software engineers are feeling the heat.

The Daily Hunt for Food in GazaFor two million hungry Gazans, most days bring a difficult search for something to eat. Amany Mteir, 52, scours the streets north of Gaza City, where people sell or trade what food they have. The war, including Israel’s bombardment and siege, has choked food imports and destroyed agriculture, and nearly the entire population of Gaza relies on scant humanitarian aid to eat. Most food shops in northern Gaza are damaged or closed, so vendors set up informal street markets to sell food and other items. An average of just six commercial trucks carrying food and other supplies have been allowed to enter Gaza each day since early December.

Johannes Vermeer's painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" was targeted by climate activists in October 2022. Given the length of time that the demonstrators spent in pre-trial detention, the court said, a prison sentence would have been excessive. To punish these activists severely might have a “chilling effect” on others, the court said in a media statement. I made Ina Garten's chicken pot pie soup, a recipe she came up with after seeing it in an airport. Garten's chicken pot pie soup is rich, comforting, and one of the best soups I've made this winter. I've warmed my family and friends' souls with Ina Garten's chicken chili, winter minestrone, and ravioli en brodo. I'm also now a champion of her homemade chicken stock (truly liquid gold). I'm trying to whip up as many soups as possible before this season ends, and nothing sounded more comforting than her chicken pot pie soup.

Companies are downsizing products without downsizing prices, and consumer posts from Reddit to TikTok to the New York Times comments section drip with indignation at the trend, widely known as “shrinkflation.”The practice isn’t new. President Biden tapped into the angst in a recent video. (“What makes me the most angry is that ice cream cartons have actually shrunk in size, but not in price,” he lamented.) One Canadian chain unveiled a growflation pizza. (“In pizza terms,” the company’s news release quipped, “a larger slice of the pie.”)

Read previewAmericans are increasingly relying on unorthodox cost-cutting measures to ensure they continue to eat amid ongoing inflation and rising food prices. Recently, US consumers are spending more money on food than they have in the past 30 years, The Wall Street Journal reported last week, citing data from the US Department of Agriculture. AdvertisementThe Journal collected hundreds of reader responses and compiled several cost-saving tips into a Tuesday story about how Americans are responding to rising prices. Buying in bulk can keep prices low, as well as purchasing non-spoilable food, people told the outlet. Other respondents said they combat rising prices by maximizing senior discounts and making a spreadsheet of their groceries and meals.

AdvertisementFollowing a diet that mimics fasting for five days a month appeared to reverse people's biological age by two and a half years on average in a study. These factors can be used to measure biological age, the authors of the study published January 20 in Nature Communications, said. While chronological age refers to how many years someone has been alive, biological age is a measure of how well cells and tissues are functioning. On day one of the FMD, participants ate around 1,100 calories, and around 720 on days two to five. Cultivating a sensible exercise habit could achieve the same or even better results, Clancy said, and is maintainable into older age.

Homelessness is highest in cities with exorbitant rents, but small cities and rural communities are not shielded from the housing crisis. Because rural America lacks many social services, like free clinics, soup kitchens and shelters, the rural homeless often make their way to places like the Water Street Mission. Is electric vehicle ownership bipartisan?
  + stars: | 2024-02-21 | by ( Alex | Leeds Matthews | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The data doesn’t include each voter with an electric vehicle, but it does offer some insight into political attitudes among consumers. Currently, the most widely available electric vehicles options are luxury brands, while mainstream consumers have more limited options. “We’re also seeing that things are really changing over time… That speaks to the fact that the economic and pollution benefits of electric vehicles don’t obey political boundaries.”Still, public opinion research suggests interest in electric vehicles has some partisan roots, even if the landscape may be changing. A 2023 Gallup poll found that 71% of Republicans would not consider buying an electric vehicle, compared with 17% of Democrats. More than one-third of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles were registered in California, according to data from the US Department of Energy in 2022.
