Amid the flurry of Democrats’ questioning whether President Biden should or will remain his party’s presidential nominee, former President Donald J. Trump has stayed unusually quiet on the issue publicly. Mr. Trump, rarely one to shy away from sharing his opinion, has not been fully silent since last week’s debate, giving a handful of radio interviews and keeping up a steady stream of posts and videos on his social media platform, Truth Social. But Mr. Trump has largely sat back and allowed the Democratic Party to dominate the debate over Mr. Biden’s political future, in a signal of his preferred opponent. After months of relentlessly attacking Mr. Biden as too physically and mentally weak to lead the country, the former president has been content to let the news coverage of Democrats’ doubting their party’s leader take hold, according to two advisers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss strategy. His relative lack of public comments on the issue also to some extent reflects his desire for Mr. Biden to stay in the race and his confidence that he can easily beat the president in November, one of the advisers said.

Former President Donald J. Trump’s silence to some extent reflects his desire for President Biden to stay in the race. But Mr. Trump has largely sat back and allowed the Democratic Party to dominate the debate over Mr. Biden’s political future, in a signal of his preferred opponent. Mr. Trump did appear to delight in mocking his rival in a raw video first reported by The Daily Beast on Wednesday and later shared by Mr. Trump. If Mr. Biden stepped aside, Mr. Trump would lose two lines of attack that have been central to his campaign. That message would be hamstrung if another candidate replaced Mr. Biden on the ticket.

‘MaXXXine’ Review: Fame Monster
  + stars: | 2024-07-04 | by ( Jeannette Catsoulis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A psychosexual thriller imagined in blood red and cocaine white, “MaXXXine,” the third installment in Ti West’s nostalgia-soaked slasher saga, is part grungy homage to 1980s Hollywood and part sleazy feminist manifesto. Darker, moodier and altogether nastier than its predecessors — “X” (2022) and, later that same year, “Pearl” — this hyperconfident feature is also funny, occasionally wistful and deeply empathetic toward its damaged, driven heroine. That would be Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), the sole survivor of the dirty-movie cast massacred in “X.” Now a successful porn star, Maxine, eager to break into mainstream movies, has relocated to a Hollywood of spectacular seediness. It is 1985 and, as in real life, a killer known as the Night Stalker is terrorizing the city, the so-called Moral Majority is hyperventilating on the sidelines and rock musicians are fighting accusations of satanic intent. In one pungent shot of Maxine’s boot grinding her cigarette stub into the silent film sex symbol Theda Bara’s star on the Walk of Fame, West underscores the transience of the celebrity status that Maxine so desperately seeks.

ARFID: the eating disorder you haven’t heard of

Now 8 years old, Hannah is being treated for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, or ARFID. Unlike eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia nervosa, this diagnosis isn’t concerned with body shape or size, said Kate Dansie, clinical director of the Eating Disorder Center in Rockville, Maryland. Instead, people with ARFID are very limited in the foods they feel safe and comfortable eating, Dansie said. While an estimated 9% of the US population will have an eating disorder at some point, studies suggest that somewhere between 0.5% and 5% of the population has ARFID, according to the National Eating Disorders Association. One way to spot the difference is the level of impairment and anxiety that comes with facing a new food, Murray said.

Millennials are poised to be the wealthiest generation in history, but are they ready to handle the large inflow of money? A vast $90 trillion wealth transfer over the next 20 years will likely make millennials "the richest generation in history," according to estimates from global real estate consultancy Knight Frank. "The millennials are very ill prepared … they're not as well prepared as the wealth creating generation," Salvatore Buscemi, co-founder and managing partner of multi-family office Brahmin Partners told CNBC. "They don't have the skill sets earlier on to be able to do that because they never had to - they were never pushed," he said. "And the problem is - are they going to be motivated later in life to push themselves to acquire these skill sets?"

CNN —On Friday, Marina Abramović staged a collective seven minute silence at the UK’s biggest music festival. In case her messaging was unclear, the Serbian artist wore a white sculptural column dress that, when her arms were outstretched, opened out into a peace sign. The dress, designed by her friend and former Burberry creative director Riccardo Tisci, was inspired by the Japanese kimono. Except for the fraying posters of Iran’s presidential candidates plastered on highway overpasses, there were few signs this weekend that the country had held a presidential election on Friday and was heading to a runoff. There were scarcely any rallies to applaud the two top vote-getters who are from opposite ends of the political spectrum and whom Iranians will decide between on July 5. Even from the government’s official numbers, it was evident that the real winner of Friday’s election was Iran’s silent majority that either left their ballot blank or cast no vote at all. Some 60 percent of eligible voters did not cast a vote or opted to cast a blank one. That was because there was no point in voting, said Bita Irani, 40, a housewife in Tehran, Iran’s capital: “We had a choice between bad and worse,” she said.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden’s debate performance has set off alarm bells among top Democrats, leaving some to openly question whether Biden can stay atop of the Democratic ticket. Pressed by Cooper on Biden’s performance, Harris offered a defense of her boss. Austin Steele/CNNBiden brushed off concerns about his debate performance, telling reporters that he thought he performed well while visiting patrons at a Waffle House after the debate. When asked about calls for him to drop out and if he had any concerns about his debate performance, Biden attacked former president Donald Trump. Democratic Party officials questioned why Biden missed other opportunities to slam Trump’s comments, particularly on the issue of abortion.

They started the night hoping that President Biden would use the first debate of 2024 to his advantage, that he would finally quash fears about his age and give the impression of a determined statesman compared with former President Donald J. Trump. But for the roughly 40 Democrats who gathered Thursday night at a union hall in Sacramento, it did not take long for the mood to descend into something between grim despair and mild panic. Within minutes, even ardent supporters in the capital of California fell silent, exchanging glances and acknowledging quietly that Mr. Biden, his virtues aside, seemed less forceful than Mr. Trump, and weary. Toward the end, some of the younger attendees left before the debate was over. “Neither of them inspires confidence,” said Dubrea Sanders, 25.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Friday significantly weakened the power of federal agencies to approve regulations in a major decision that could have sweeping implications for the environment, public health and the workplace. But the decision will net a far wider swath of federal regulations affecting many facets of American life. The decision overturns the Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council precedent that required courts to give deference to federal agencies when creating regulations based on an ambiguous law. The justices have been incrementally diminishing federal power for years, but the new case gave the court an opportunity to take a much broader stride. The Supreme Court had been trending in that direction for years, knocking back attempts by federal agencies in other contexts to approve regulations on their own.

As Mr. Biden fielded the opening question, Mr. Trump remained silent behind his lectern for the full two minutes of his opponent’s answer. A few minutes later, Mr. Trump’s restraint was apparent when Mr. Biden jabbed at him over the number of troops who died on his watch. Instead of shouting or interrupting, Mr. Trump puckered his lips and waited until Mr. Biden finished. Do We Need Language to Think?
  + stars: | 2024-06-19 | by ( Carl Zimmer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For thousands of years, philosophers have argued about the purpose of language. Starting in the 1960s, Noam Chomsky, a linguist at M.I.T., argued that we use language for reasoning and other forms of thought. “If there is a severe deficit of language, there will be severe deficit of thought,” he wrote. Dr. Fedorenko went on to become a cognitive neuroscientist at M.I.T., using brain scanning to investigate how the brain produces language. And after 15 years, her research has led her to a startling conclusion: We don’t need language to think.
