New York CNN —American Airlines and JetBlue Airways have to break up their alliance on Northeast US flight routes, a US District Court judge ordered Friday. US District Judge Leo Sorokin ruled in favor of the the Justice Department, giving the Biden administration a victory in its years-long lawsuit against the airlines’ collaboration. The airlines have 30 days to end their partnership, Sorokin ruled – just as the busy summer travel season kicks off. The Justice Department also alleged the two airlines shared revenues earned at these airports, eliminating their incentives to compete with one another. CNN has reached out to American Airlines, JetBlue and the Justice Department for comment.

Over $14.4 million worth of US-made aircraft parts illegally entered Russia in 2022. Millions of dollars worth of aircraft parts entered Russia in 2022 despite Western sanctions preventing exports — suggesting the strategy isn't as bulletproof as governments had hoped. The aviation sector was expected to take a big hit as Russian carriers — including Rossiya Airlines, Aeroflot, Ural Airlines, S7 Airlines, Utair Aviation, and Pobeda Airlines — mostly fly Boeing and Airbus planes. With the influx of parts, Russian carriers have been able to better maintain their fleets — a reality that was not initially anticipated by experts, Bloomberg reported. Even so, Russian airlines have scheduled over 10,000 flights between Russia and Central Asia in May, per the NYT.

Photo: richard a. brooks/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesNearly 78 years ago, around a Hiroshima bridge not far from where President Biden is scheduled to meet world leaders this week, a 4-year-old boy named Eiji Kishida was walking with his mother. On Sunday the IDF said Islamic Jihad had launched nearly 1,500 rockets towards Israel between Wednesday and Saturday. A rocket launched from Gaza killed a Palestinian man working in Israel and seriously wounded another, Israel medical authorities said. In a separate incident, clashes also took place on Saturday morning in the occupied West Bank and at least two Palestinian men were killed, Palestinian officials said. The latest flare-up began on Tuesday, with the IDF launching strikes on Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian militant group it accuses of planning attacks against Israel. It is the third conflict in as many years between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, including Hamas, the largest armed group in the enclave, and Islamic Jihad, the second largest.
The al Quds Brigades of Islamic Jihad said in a statement shortly after the rocket fire: “The launching towards Jerusalem is a message, and everyone should understand its purpose. Talks to bring about a ceasefire between Israel and Islamic Jihad in Gaza are “on ice right now,” a diplomatic source familiar with the negotiations told CNN Friday. One command center was used by senior Islamic Jihad operative Muhammad Abu Al Ata for “the planning and command of terrorist activity against Israel,” the IDF said. The Israel Defense Forces said that IDF fighter jets also struck four military posts belonging to Islamic Jihad. ‘Shield and Arrow’The IDF began unleashing waves of airstrikes on Tuesday on what it says are Islamic Jihad operatives and infrastructure along the strip.
A Republican law has slashed the average tax rates of big pharmaceutical companies by more than 40% since it was enacted in 2017, Senate Finance Committee Democrats said in a report Thursday. That provision allowed U.S.-based pharmaceutical companies to access lower tax rates on their foreign income, the report said. Pharmaceutical companies report 75% of their taxable income overseas, the report said. The report said the average rate fell to 11.6% in 2019 and 2020, which resulted in billions of dollars in tax savings for pharmaceutical companies. Wyden also obtained similar information about other U.S. pharmaceutical companies, including Abbott Laboratories , Amgen , Bristol Myers Squibb and Merck .

After Mr. Bernstein’s death in 1990 (Mrs. Bernstein died in 1978), the three children inherited the property. As when their parents were alive, the compound is a gathering spot for birthdays and holidays, and for fiercely contested rounds of Anagrams. Lately, it has also served as a set for the upcoming film “Maestro,” a portrait of the Bernsteins’ complicated marriage directed by and starring Bradley Cooper. “He wanted an authenticity about how he was evoking our dad and his world,” Ms. Bernstein said of Mr. Cooper. “He was very curious to come up here and visit, and that’s when he decided he wanted to come back and shoot in and around the house.

Hong Kong CNN —You cannot carry heavy things. Chan is a “pui yuet,” also called a confinement nanny, who lives with families after a baby is born. Richard, a content creator from Canada, traveled to Hong Kong to become a model and fell in love with her husband, Tom, there. During that time, the pui yuet makes dishes catering to the mother’s physical needs and helps her with milk production and other concerns. Few entities track the pricing of nannies in Hong Kong on a consistent basis because most negotiations are directly between clients and the nannies.
Jerusalem CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told CNN Sunday his country would remain a “robust democracy” despite controversial plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system. With the Israeli parliament starting its summer session on Sunday the proposals could be back in play. “Israel has been thrown off balance,” Netanyahu argued, as he often does when defending the judicial overhaul program. “The onus is on all of us” – Israel, the United States and our Arab neighbors – “to stop Iran from becoming a military nuclear power,” he said. Netanyahu also rejected Zakaria’s suggestion that the flare-up of violence between Israel and the Palestinians could torpedo Israel’s warming relations with its Arab neighbors.

[1/4] Actor and Director Adjoa Andoh performs on stage in the play "Richard III" in Liverpool, Britain in this handout picture taken in April, 2023. Manuel Harlan/Handout via REUTERSLONDON, April 26 (Reuters) - When actor Adjoa Andoh read William Shakespeare's "Richard III" as a child, she was struck by how he was treated. "As a child growing up in the Cotswolds in the 1960s, it was something I resonated with." Decades later, Andoh is starring in the lead role and directing her iteration of the play, set in the Cotswolds and in which Richard's "otherness" is race rather than disability. She emphasised she was not changing the language or the text of the play or playing Richard as a woman, but "doing it in this frame and through this lens".
Fires are breaking out on Navy ships in port more often than they are reported, a government watchdog found. The GAO flagged multiple problems with the reporting system, as well as how lessons are learned from fires. It said the incomplete picture has "given the Navy a false sense of security." Fires when a ship is in port, particularly when it is undergoing repairs and maintenance, are not uncommon. "As a result," the GAO assessed, "the Navy has lost lessons learned over time—such as steps that a ship can take to improve fire safety."

Why they abandoned a successful settlement is a mystery that historians never have been able to fully explain. The idea that sea levels would have been rising as temperatures fell is a little counterintuitive, according to the researchers. However, Earth’s oceans aren’t like a bathtub, and the study noted that changes in sea level don’t affect all areas equally. The Greenland Ice Sheet readvanced during Viking occupation of the eastern settlement and peaked in the Little Ice Age. That advance caused sea level rise near the ice margins because of the sinking of Earth’s crust, according to the study.
These include the MAX 7, MAX 8, and the MAX 8200, which is a high-capacity version of the MAX 8 variant. American has 42 MAX planes in its fleet and 88 on order. The carrier has 137 MAX planes in its fleet with firm orders for 417, plus another 147 as options. Though Boeing and its partners are still assessing the impact of the most recent delivery stoppage, delivery delays have become a serious trend for the planemaker. And, Boeing said despite its recent 787 delivery pause, it didn't "anticipate a change to our production and delivery outlook for the year."

The problem is related to two of several brackets in the aft fuselage of some 737 Max planes, including the most popular model, the Max 8. Boeing has a backlog of 4,196 Max planes, according to a tally on its website. "Boeing contacted us regarding an issue with a supplier's manufacturing process that will affect the delivery of Boeing 737 MAX planes to Southwest," the company said in a statement Thursday. A worldwide grounding and production pause of the 737 Max followed two fatal crashes of the Max.
