UnitedHealth Group provided a 2025 profit forecast below Wall Street estimates on Tuesday, saying it expects pressure across its government-supported health insurance businesses, and its shares fell 9%. The largest U.S. health insurer forecast a profit of as much as $30 per share. UnitedHealth's third-quarter medical costs also exceeded Wall Street estimates as the insurer paid out more due to persistently high demand for healthcare services while receiving lower reimbursements on government-backed plans. The company also trimmed the higher end of its 2024 adjusted profit forecast by 25 cents to $27.75 per share. Despite the rise in medical costs, UnitedHealth beat Wall Street estimates for adjusted profit by 15 cents due to increased memberships across its businesses.

Philip Esformes, whose 20-year prison sentence for a massive, $1.3 billion Medicare fraud scheme was commuted in 2020 by then-President Donald Trump, was arrested over the weekend in Florida on domestic-violence related charges. Esformes is at least the seventh person who received executive clemency from Trump, and has since been charged with new crimes, according to The New York Times, which first reported this latest arrest. Court records show that Esformes was arrested Saturday and then charged with tampering with a victim or witness, and with criminal mischief involving property damage. CNBC also has requested comment from a lawyer for Esformes' ex-wife, Sherri Beth Esformes, whose divorce from him was finalized in July 2020. On Tuesday, a judge in Miami federal court set a deadline of Nov. 4 for Philip Esformes to respond to his ex-wife's filing.

Pearsall was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco’s Union Square area and was hospitalized overnight. Those working-class White women loom as a critical, potentially even decisive, factor in Trump’s third White House bid. But while White women with a college degree have trended toward the Democrats in the presidential campaigns since then, the White women without a college degree have moved sharply in the opposite direction. She acknowledges that Trump’s alarms have resonated among working-class White women, especially older ones. Not only college-educated White women, but also the equivalent White men were much more likely than the blue-collar White women to express positive views about Harris and negative ones about Trump, Gallup found. “I think there is a lot of implicit [gender] bias with” these working-class White women, Lake said.

As has been the case for previous Woodward books, those who don’t come out well from his reporting publicly dismiss it. Woodward notes that neither Biden nor Trump spoke to him for this book, but he still got great access. It’s clear from a close reading of “War” that almost every top national security official in the Biden administration spoke with him. The Biden administration has halted the shipment of massive 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, but otherwise, the large flow of American weapons to the Jewish state continues. CNN —Kamala Harris is responding to Democratic panic about her White House prospects by turning up the heat on Donald Trump. The vice president warned Monday that the ex-president was “unstable,” “unhinged” and out for “unchecked power” as she sent a jolt of urgency though her campaign with 21 days to go. Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, meanwhile, went even further, suggesting the ex-president’s musings about using the military against domestic foes he branded “the enemy from within” could even amount to treason. An image of former President Donald Trump appears on screen as Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 2024. A new Pew study says nearly 70% of adults agree that schools should ban phones during class. But the broader topic of social media and its effects on teen mental health is still being debated. The US Surgeon General recently suggested social media should come with a warning label for teens. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florida wildlife experts are warning locals in areas battered by Hurricanes Helene and Milton to avoid dark floodwaters for a hair-raising reason: alligators and snakes. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission wrote on X after Milton hit: “Some wildlife, such as alligators, snakes, and bears are more likely to be seen after a storm. She warned that alligators don’t want to be near people, but if someone tries to grab them, they will snap at them. Also ahead of Milton, the Florida Health department urged people to avoid floodwaters due to exposure to Vibrio, a flesh-eating bacteria commonly found in warm coastal waters. It stirred up colonies of yellow jackets in western North Carolina, likely due to their underground nests being destroyed from rain, flood water and toppled trees.
