Insider recently revealed that prominent bankruptcy judge David Jones was in a romantic relationship with a bankruptcy attorney. Both Jones and the attorney had involvement with the bankruptcy case of the prison healthcare company Corizon. Jones oversaw the settlement talks in Tehum's bankruptcy; Freeman represented YesCare — and signed off on Jones' appointment as mediator in May. "Judge Jones did not disclose his relationship with Ms. Freeman to the parties, to their counsel or to the bankruptcy judge who appointed Judge Jones," the misconduct complaint says. Already, the disclosure of Jones' relationship has encouraged the US Trustee to intervene.

CNN —The Biden administration will restart deporting Venezuelans directly to Venezuela in an attempt to curb the record influx of crossings at the US-Mexico border, according to senior administration officials, marking a major shift in policy. “Repatriations are a key piece to this balanced approach.”Thursday’s announcement is the latest effort by the Biden administration to try to discourage migration to the US-Mexico border, while highlighting other lawful pathways available to certain migrants who want to migrate to the US. It’s also a recognition of the complicated – and unique – challenge for the Biden administration as it faces a historic wave of Venezuelan migrants. Mexico has agreed to take some, but it remains a difficult issue for administration and for cities receiving migrants. Venezuela was among the topics of discussion between President Joe Biden and Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva last month.

But the move comes at a time when a new surge of migrants is straining federal and local resources and placing heavy political pressure on the Biden administration to address a sprawling crisis. Border Patrol reported nearly 300,000 encounters in the Rio Grande Valley sector between last October and August, according to federal data. Last month, Border Patrol apprehended more than 200,000 migrants crossing the US-Mexico border, the highest total this year. Over the last two years, his administration has continued to face fierce pushback from Republicans – and at times, Democrats – over his immigration policies. Senior administration officials maintain that the US has been in regular touch with Mexico over the situation at the US southern border, including commitments to shore up enforcement.

Latinas stand to lose more than $1.2 million over their careers due to the pay gap — and for Latinas with college degrees, that gap is even wider. That pay gap translates to a staggering loss of $30,450 per year. In 1989, Latinas working full-time were paid just $0.52 for every dollar paid to white men — which means that the Latina pay gap has only narrowed by pennies every decade since. How salary negotiations can exacerbate the wage gapFor many Latinas, the wage gap starts as early as the job search. "It's important to have mentors but to ensure that Latinas get these stepping-stone jobs and break the pay gap, they need sponsors, too," says Guasso.

“The border wall – the money was appropriated for the border wall,” Biden told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday. JB Pritzker sent a letter to the White House demanding federal coordination to deal with people crossing the border. Pritzker and Johnson both gave White House officials an earful in a hastily arranged conference call late Sunday, according to CNN’s report. CNN reported back in September on the breakdown in the relationship between the White House and New York’s mayor. Earlier this month, CNN spent the night in the Roosevelt Hotel, which closed as a commercial enterprise during the pandemic and now is used to temporarily house migrants.

Durable goods are seen on sale in a store in Los Angeles, California, U.S., March 24, 2017. Part of the surprise increase in durable goods orders reported by the Commerce Department on Wednesday, however, likely reflected higher prices as inflation picked up last month. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast durable goods orders falling 0.5% last month. These so-called core capital goods orders were previously reported to have edged up 0.1% in July. Core capital goods shipments rebounded 0.7% after falling 0.3% in July.

CNN —US Border Patrol separated some migrant children from their parents while the families were in custody amid overcrowding in facilities, according to a Friday court filing. The filing, which is part of a years-long court case, underscores the humanitarian and logistical challenges facing the Biden administration following an increase in migrant families crossing the US-Mexico border. Over the course of site visits this summer, Dr. Paul Wise, a pediatrician, found that authorities at a border facility in Donna, Texas, separated children from parents while in custody. “Separated children included girls separated from mothers and boys separated from their fathers. Still, circumstances in which children are separated from their parents in government custody remain troubling for advocates.

CNN —A federal judge in Texas ruled Wednesday that a regulation intended to preserve the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is unlawful, delivering a major blow to the Biden administration. The Biden administration released a rule last year to “preserve and fortify” DACA, largely maintaining the criteria for the program. Hanen’s ruling comes after a federal appeals court largely upheld his previous ruling finding DACA unlawful. In his Wednesday ruling, Hanen cited the ongoing legal fight over the program and put the onus on Congress. Democrats and Republicans have been sympathetic to the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children, many of whom were under the age of 10.

ROME (AP) — “Poor Things,” a film about Victorian-era female empowerment, won the Golden Lion on Saturday at a Venice Film Festival largely deprived of Hollywood glamour because of the writers and actors strikes. The film, starring Emma Stone, won the top prize at the 80th edition of the festival, which is often a predictor of Oscar glory. The film tells the story of two young boys’ odyssey from Dakar, Senegal, to the detention camps in Libya and finally across the Mediterranean to Europe. Peter Sarsgaard won best actor for “Memory,” in which he co-stars with Jessica Chastain in a film about high schoolers reuniting. Actors went on strike in July, joining writers who had walked off the job in May, to demand that streaming sites and film studios improve their contracts and impose curbs on the use of artificial intelligence. SOLIDARITYVenice's artistic director Alberto Barbera had predicted that the actors of just three of the 23 films in competition would not be able to come to the festival because of the strike. No official reason was given, but one festival insider said she believed it was out of solidarity. Without their actors, the directors did most of the talking and were regularly quizzed about the dispute. Some of the actors who did make it to the festival wore T-shirts promoting the strike, as did the president of the main jury, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle.
