Washington CNN —Homeowners in America aren’t the only ones struggling with an unaffordable housing market. A report from Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies released last week showed that both homeowners and renters in recent years have become increasingly burdened by climbing housing costs. That’s all part of a broader struggle in the US housing market, and recent data shows that it hasn’t gotten any better. But there’s a problem: ChatGPT — soon to be integrated into Siri — is banned in China, reports my colleague Samantha Murphy Kelly. The Chicago Fed releases its National Activity Index for May.

For the first time, used EVs are less expensive than their traditional gas counterparts. Not only are prices lower, they're also plummeting at a much steeper clip, a recent report from iSeeCars said. In the 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. Friday, 36 Chinese military aircraft crossed into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry says. That's according to "The State of the Nation's Housing 2024" report published by Harvard University this week. Only 6.6 million — fewer than 15% — of the 45 million renter households in the US make enough to afford the median payment. Indeed, the Harvard study found that 23% of homeowner households were "stretched worryingly thin," and more than a quarter of renters were paying at least half their incomes toward housing and utilities in 2022. Many homeowners are seeing their incomes squeezed by steeper prices and interest payments, and many renters have given up on buying a home.

CNN —Riley Strain, a Missouri college student who went missing after leaving a downtown Nashville bar and whose body was later found in a river, died of accidental drowning and alcohol poisoning, the medical examiner’s office said Tuesday. Strain’s body was found in the Cumberland River in West Nashville on the morning of March 22, several miles from where he had gone missing. The autopsy report said Strain’s blood alcohol level was 0.228, which is almost three times the legal driving limit. CNN obtained a copy of the autopsy report from CNN affiliate WTVF and has reached out to the Strain family’s attorney for comment. If the international expansion of Japanese companies is any guide, Chinese companies still have significant potential left in the global market. The company did not break out overseas revenue for the first quarter, but said overall revenue grew by 14% from a year ago to 3.8 billion yuan. When compared to Japanese companies, the contribution of overseas revenue to the total for Chinese businesses is low across industries. ☆ Investigation underway into rare, unsafe airliner roll experienced by a Boeing 737 Max

CNN —Federal authorities and Boeing are trying to figure out why a 737 Max 8 experienced a rare, unsafe back-and-forth roll during flight. There were no injuries onboard Southwest Airlines flight 746 on May 25, according to the airline and a preliminary report by the FAA. It is unclear if the damaged unit led to or was a result of the roll. The plane has not flown since landing in Oakland, California after the incident, except to move it to a Boeing facility in Washington state. Southwest told CNN it referred the incident to the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board and is participating in and supporting the investigation.

By the time intelligence collected on overseas ISIS targets connected the men to the terror group, they had already been vetted by immigration authorities and allowed into the country, officials said. The men remain in federal custody on immigration charges and will eventually be deported following the counterterror investigation into them. US officials and analysts who closely track Islamist terror groups do know that ISIS-K has dramatically ramped up its online propaganda machine. But that’s not necessarily a reliable gauge of the number of actual terrorists who may be trying to enter the United States, US officials argue. Or they could belong to a legacy terror group — like the FARC — that isn’t known for conducting attacks on US soil.

China needs bond market reforms as soaring debt poses significant longer-term risk to the country, according to S&P Global. Despite the government's efforts, debt levels remain very high even as nominal GDP growth has slowed, the rating agency said in a report on Thursday. "Policymakers understand the need to simultaneously control leverage and sustain economic growth" to manage systemic risks over the long-term, the analysts noted. But market reforms appear to have "taken a back seat," with authorities focused on addressing pressing issues such as the real estate crisis, stimulating economic growth, as well as keeping local government debt under control, S&P said. Pushing ahead with bond market reforms may be necessary to "concurrently" tackle those challenges, as it could lower debt levels over the long term, the report said.
