CNN —French authorities have recorded more than 50 physical assaults on candidates and campaigners on the campaign trail, the country’s Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said Friday as concerns mount about political violence ahead of France’s high-stakes parliamentary elections. However, we have counted 51 candidates, deputies, or campaigners who have been physically assaulted. The attacks have ranged from the less severe to “extremely serious,” Darmanin said, adding that some candidates have been hospitalised for their injuries. Roughly thirty or so people have been taken in for questioning in relation to the attacks, Darmanin added. In Cherbourg, a center-right candidate from The Republicans party, Nicolas Conquer, made a formal complaint after he claimed he was assaulted by left-wing campaigners on Monday.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer took office after his center-left Labour Party won a landslide election victory that decisively swept the Conservatives out of power. It was the worst defeat for the party in its nearly 200-year history. Labour’s more than 410 seats in Parliament ensured the party a robust majority. Reform U.K., the new anti-immigration party led by Nigel Farage, who is a Trump ally and Brexit champion, won just five Parliament seats but became the third-biggest party by vote share, with about 14 percent. A veteran political disrupter, Farage could try to poach the remnants of the debilitated Conservatives.

One of the biggest surprises of Britain's election night so far has been the gains seen by the right-wing Reform UK party, which is forecast to win numerous parliamentary seats and has logged a strong showing in early results. Early results also pointed toward strong gains. Six constituencies had been called as of 1 a.m. London time, with Reform in second place with 23.8% of the vote. In a video posted on X titled: "The revolt against the establishment is underway," Farage said the gains his party has seen so far are "almost unbelievable." The win by the infamous Brexiteer follows seven failed attempts to become a member of British parliament, although he has served as a (pro-Brexit) member of the European Parliament. The result comes amid a surprisingly strong election performance by Reform UK, which has a hardline stance on immigration and was born out of the Brexit Party. Voters go to the polls in Britain on Thursday in a dyspeptic mood, many of them frustrated with the Conservative government but skeptical that any replacement can unravel the tangle of problems hobbling the country. Their skepticism is warranted, according to analysts. Even if the Labour Party wins a robust majority in Parliament, as polls suggest, it will confront a raft of challenges, from a torpid economy to a corroded National Health Service, without having many tools to fix them. The Labour leader, Keir Starmer, would inherit a “legacy of ashes,” said Robert Ford, a professor of political science at the University of Manchester. And voters, who less than five years ago elected the Conservatives in a landslide, are not likely to give Mr. Starmer much slack to turn things around.

It could be a disastrous night for the Conservatives, with the exit poll predicting the lowest-ever total number of seats in the party’s history. Because of its electoral system, Britain can see large discrepancies between the share of seats won by a party and its share of the popular vote. The exit poll suggests one of the largest swings in British political history, with Labour expected to win 410 seats and the Conservatives on 131. Britain’s traditional third party, the Liberal Democrats, also enjoyed a huge bump, going from just 11 seats won at the 2019 general election to a projected 61. Reform UK, a right-wing populist party, was projected to win 13 seats, also a lot more than many polls had suggested.

CNN —Concerns are growing about political violence ahead of high-stakes parliamentary elections in France after a series of lawmakers were attacked on the campaign trail this week. French government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot and her team came under attack while canvassing on Wednesday night, the latest in a string of violent incidents involving French lawmakers contesting Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Four people have been taken in for questioning regarding the incident, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told French television station France 2 on Thursday morning. Acknowledging that violence has been linked to both the far-right and far-left camps, Bardella vowed, if appointed, to be a prime minister who “re-establishes order” in France. An additional 30,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed across France on Sunday night in the event of public disorder, Darmanin said Thursday.
