The aromatic vineyards of Würzburg and the city’s architectural masterpieces hardly registered with Tyrell Terry as he journeyed to the Franconia region of Germany in December. His life in basketball, once a source of joy to him, had collapsed into a debilitating and lonely loop, and he could see little beyond his own misery. If anything could renew his desire to play basketball, Terry reasoned, it would be joining up with his buddy Nico Carvacho, who now played in a professional league in Germany. In the mornings, he dashed to the bathroom, fell to his knees by the toilet and threw up. The cycle had come for him again, the same relentless anguish that had drained the enjoyment from his life and stripped away his N.B.A.

Wes Anderson’s Best Needle Drops

Dear listeners,One day when I was 14, I stayed home sick from school and watched a weird little movie called “Rushmore” on Comedy Central. The filmmaker Wes Anderson had created his own alternate reality, with its own color scheme, its own vernacular, and — perhaps most crucially — its own killer music. For aspiring aesthetes, Anderson’s movies can be gateway drugs. Eager to catch all of his cinematic references and influences, his films led me to the work of directors like François Truffaut, Yasujiro Ozu and Satyajit Ray. The needle drops in most of Anderson’s films are the result of his longtime working relationship with the music supervisor Randall Poster.

More Than Likes is a series about social media personalities who are trying to do positive things for their communities. Before he was New York Nico (handle: @newyorknico), the popular social-media documentarian of New York’s quirks and characters, Nicolas Heller was the “mayor of 16th Street” — at age 3. On his walk home from nursery school, Mr. Heller would check in with all the friendly faces on the block: the manager at Steak Frites who kept a tub of ice cream with the boy’s name on it; the security guard at the tile store who tipped his cap and made funny faces at him; the antique-clothing salespeople who would turn their standing mirror around so he could see his reflection.

Apple unveiled a bunch of new features at its WWDC on Monday. That included "Live Voicemail" which delivers a transcript so users can decide if they want to pick up a call. One example of the tech featured a man preparing to bathe some raccoons he discovered in the basement. While most people were focused on the Vision Pro headset and its enormous pricetag, Apple unveiled a host of updates to its existing products. But it definitely suits the advertised tone of an urgent phone call, and one imaginative copywriter has brought more eyes to this feature that might've otherwise gone under the radar.

[Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that Nico Vergara worked at Zeds Real Fruit Ice Cream before launching his business. And it all started with a small New Zealand-style "real fruit" ice cream cart in Portland, Oregon. Vergara helped manage a business, Zed's Real Fruit Ice Cream, that used the machine before starting his own in 2021. Most of that revenue — $473,000 — came solely from Nico's Ice Cream. One piece of equipment was particularly important: the ice cream blender, made by a Hope, New Zealand-based company called Little Jem.

"That was a real Monaco," Verstappen said after a 78-lap race that lasted an hour and 48 minutes. CLOSEST RIVALThe win was Verstappen's fourth of the season, second in Monaco and 39th of his career. Mexican team mate Sergio Perez, his closest title rival, started in last position after a qualifying crash and finished two laps down in 16th. Alpine's Pierre Gasly, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, McLaren's Lando Norris and team mate Oscar Piastri completed the points positions. While Alonso celebrated his fifth podium of the season, and best result yet for Aston Martin, Canadian team mate Lance Stroll retired after repeated tangles with rivals.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who had been hoping for his third home pole in a row, had to settle for third while Verstappen's team mate and closest title rival Sergio Perez crashed and will start last. "I think that is one of the best laps he’s ever driven in qualifying," said Horner of his champion's 23rd career pole. Last year's winner Perez, 14 points behind Verstappen after five races, crashed at the Sainte Devote first corner in the opening session. The Mexican crashed in the final phase of qualifying last year but started third, and ahead of Verstappen. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll was only 14th on the grid and behind the Williams of Alex Albon in 13th.

Google’s and Apple’s tools were clearly the most sophisticated when it came to image analysis. And Apple, with technology that performed similarly to Google’s in our test, appeared to disable the ability to look for monkeys and apes as well. Mr. Alciné was dismayed to learn that Google has still not fully solved the problem and said society puts too much trust in technology. Computer vision products are now used for tasks as mundane as sending an alert when there is a package on the doorstep, and as weighty as navigating cars and finding perpetrators in law enforcement investigations. As a result, the technology was not familiar enough with darker-skinned people and confused them for gorillas.

Red Bull's double world champion Max Verstappen had spent much of the hot and steamy practice at the top of the charts but ended the session fourth fastest behind the two Mercedes and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz was fifth fastest followed by Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Hamilton was just 0.212 seconds back while Verstappen, the winner in the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, was nearly a half-second off the pace. MIAMI, May 5 (Reuters) - Formula One teams often have to deal with in-house divisions but Sergio Perez insists all is quiet on the Red Bull home front with the drivers championship shaping up as an epic tussle between the cool Mexican and fiery team mate Max Verstappen. Red Bull have won every grand prix this season, with three of the four races producing one-two finishes. Since joining Red Bull in 2021 Perez has been the clear number two. He has played the part of consummate team mate dutifully following orders but there are signs this season things are different. "I do believe the team will give me as much support as they do with Max in that regard we have to appreciate that from Red Bull."
In October 2021, Google promised to stop placing ads alongside content that denied the existence and causes of climate change, so that purveyors of the false claims could no longer make money on its platforms, including YouTube. And yet if you recently clicked on a YouTube video titled “who is Leonardo DiCaprio,” you might have found a ramble of claims that climate change is a hoax and the world is cooling after a Paramount+ ad for the film “80 for Brady,” starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Sally Field and Rita Moreno. Before another video that purported to detail “how climate activists distort the evidence,” some users saw an ad for Alaska Airlines. These are not aberrations, according to a coalition of environmental organizations and the Center for Countering Digital Hate. In a report released on Tuesday, researchers from the organizations accused YouTube of continuing to profit from videos that portrayed the changing climate as a hoax or exaggeration.
