The financial health of Social Security and Medicare, two of the nation’s most crucial safety net programs, has improved this year as a stronger-than-expected U.S. economy attracted more workers to the labor market, buttressing funding for the critical programs. Annual reports released on Monday by trustees of the old age and retirement programs showed that while both still face long-term shortfalls that could ultimately result in reduced retirement and medical benefits, lawmakers will have slightly more time before they begin to fray. About 70 million people receive Social Security benefits, and more than 66 million participate in Medicare. The fate of the popular programs continues to be a contentious political issue, one that is expected to intensify as the November presidential election draws near. President Biden has pledged to block any cuts to Social Security and Medicare and has called for shoring up the programs with higher taxes on the rich.

Full Social Security benefits are expected to run out in 2035, per the program's trustees. AdvertisementAs more Americans fear being unprepared for retirement — and rely solely on Social Security — those full benefits might not be long-lived. Meanwhile, among the income that typical retirees do receive, just under 80% see income from Social Security. The latest estimates on Social Security also come as the US economy braces for a "peak boomer" wave of new retirees. That's the biggest group of boomers retiring yet, and, per that analysis, many will end up having to rely on Social Security benefits to stay afloat.

Valerie Macon | Afp | Getty ImagesThe trust funds the Social Security Administration relies on to pay benefits are now projected to run out in 2035, one year later than previously projected, according to the annual trustees' report released on Monday. The Social Security trustees credited the slightly improved outlook to more people contributing to the program amid a strong economy, low unemployment and higher job and wage growth. "This year's report is a measure of good news for the millions of Americans who depend on Social Security, including the roughly 50% of seniors for whom Social Security is the difference between poverty and living in dignity — any potential benefit reduction event has been pushed off from 2034 to 2035," Social Security Commissioner Martin O'Malley said in a statement. What reports reveal about Social Security, MedicareSocial Security's new 2035 depletion date applies to its combined trust funds. The Medicare Hospital Insurance trust fund — used to fund Part A benefits — saw the biggest improvement in this year's trustees report.

For the first time in the history of the United States, billionaires had a lower effective tax rate than working-class Americans. Opinion Guest Essay Make Billionaires Pay (Their Taxes)Until recently, it was hard to know just how good the superrich are at avoiding taxes. Let’s agree that billionaires should pay income taxes equivalent to a small portion — say, 2 percent — of their wealth each year. Billionaires who already pay the baseline amount of income tax would have no extra tax to pay. The idea that billionaires should pay a minimum amount of income tax is not a radical idea.

CVS Health on Wednesday reported first-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that missed expectations and slashed its full-year profit outlook, citing higher medical costs that are dogging the U.S. insurance industry. The drugstore chain expects 2024 adjusted earnings of at least $7 per share, down from a previous guidance of at least $8.30 per share. The company said its new outlook assumes that higher medical costs in its insurance business during the first quarter will persist throughout the year. Medicare Advantage, a privately run health insurance plan contracted by Medicare, has long been a key source of growth and profits for the insurance industry. Excluding certain items, such as amortization of intangible assets and capital losses, adjusted earnings per share were $1.31 for the quarter.

CNN —Not long ago, senior citizens got the two biggest annual increases in their monthly Social Security checks that most had ever seen. While inflation has afflicted Americans of every age, senior citizens are often in a more difficult predicament because many live off fixed incomes. Many depend heavily on Social Security – some 42% of elderly women and 37% of elderly men rely on the monthly payments for at least half their income, according to the Social Security Administration. They aren’t wrong: Inflation has eaten away at 36% of Social Security benefits’ buying power since 2000, according to an analysis last year from The Senior Citizens League. The president needs these senior voters since polls also show his support among younger Americans has eroded since 2020.

Andrew Cuomo, after being subpoenaed last month, has agreed to testify to Congress about his controversial nursing home advisory from the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Rep. Brad Wenstrup told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Friday. Cuomo has insisted that advisory was consistent with guidance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, his upcoming appearance before lawmakers is a sign of continuing scrutiny over his handling of long-term care facilities during the pandemic. The voluntary agreement means that Cuomo will participate with a transcribed interview rather than a deposition. "As important as these drugs are, they will not do any good for the millions of patients who cannot afford them," wrote Sanders. Wegovy, which is even more expensive than Ozempic, is subject to similarly disparate pricing overseas, wrote Sanders. The powerful progressive senator also made a simple request of the drug company CEO: "Will Novo Nordisk substantially reduce both the list price and the net price of both Ozempic and Wegovy?" The court’s far-right wing, perhaps in an attempt to keep those two justices on their side, framed the case as a federal overreach into state power. Turner, Idaho’s attorney, shot back that mental health could essentially open a loophole. Conservatives have long opposed allowing exceptions to strict abortion bans for mental health. Justice Samuel Alito, a fellow conservative, picked up on that same theme, repeatedly pressing Prelogar to explain whether the Justice Department views mental health as a way around Idaho’s abortion ban. That is exactly the kind of political influence that the Supreme Court, especially under Roberts, has generally tried to avoid.

But some eligible beneficiaries could still face out-of-pocket costs for the highly popular and expensive drug, KFF said. Certain Medicare prescription drug plans may also wait until 2025 to cover Wegovy. Medicare's budget could be strained as more plans cover the costs of Wegovy. Among the Medicare beneficiaries who are obese or overweight and have a history of heart disease, 1.9 million also have diabetes, according to KFF. That makes them already eligible for Medicare coverage of other GLP-1 drugs approved for that condition.

Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical has several growth opportunities ahead that could lead its share price to boom over the next year, according to RBC Capital Markets. Analyst Luca Issi initiated research coverage of the pharmaceutical company, which develops treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases, with an outperform rating and $77 price target. Ultragenyx is forecasting between $500 million and $530 million in revenue for 2024, driven by rare bone disease drug Crysvita, long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorder drug Dojolvi, as well as therapies Mepsevii and Evkeeza. The analyst is also looking ahead to Ultragenyx's treatments for Angelman syndrome, Glycogen storage disease type 1, or GSD1a, plus Wilson's disease as potential opportunities to drive up the stock. Wilson's disease is a rare genetic disorder that prevents the body from eliminating copper, which then leads it to accumulate in the liver, brain and other organs.

Mammograms can miss tumors in women with dense breast tissue. So for these patients, doctors often include a second scan — ultrasound, for example, or an M.R.I. Though many women see the extra scan as a routine form of prevention, Medicare won’t pay for it, and some patients are left to pick up a hefty tab. But the clinic’s staff said that while her mammogram would be fully covered by Medicare, a so-called supplemental ultrasound was not. “I just don’t understand how something that has been the recommended diagnostic test for years is suddenly not covered by Medicare,” she said.

Small businesses are seeing labor growth this year, but hospitals still have staffing shortages. Healthcare worker numbers are steadily growing but remain below pre-pandemic trends, according to a Bank of America report published in April. Outpatient care centers are 9.4% behind on growth, while the hospital labor force has seen small gains at 0.3%. In fact, healthcare workers made up a significant portion of the people leaving their jobs during the Great Resignation.
