WASHINGTON — Billie Jean King will become the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey announced Tuesday that their bipartisan legislation had passed the House of Representatives and would be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature. The bill to honor King, the tennis Hall of Famer and activist, had already passed unanimously in the Senate. The medal, awarded by Congress for distinguished achievements and contributions to society, has previously been given to athletes including baseball players Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, and golfers Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson and Arnold Palmer. King had already been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

The program had marked a shift in Denver’s strategy of housing migrants in massive temporary shelters to providing individual resources. About 860 people are currently part of the program, which offers six months of housing, job training, language instruction and legal support in filing asylum claims, according to city officials. In addition to ending the program, the city is closing its remaining migrant shelter at the end of the month, Jon Ewing, a city spokesperson who manages communications for Denver’s newcomer response, said Tuesday. Denver, Chicago and New York have had to adapt over the past two years as their migrant populations have grown since Texas Gov. Ewing said Denver is “enormously proud” of its asylum-seeker resource program and its broader migrant response.

“There’s no one that can organize quite like labor,” Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said. All together, labor leaders predict thousands of union members will deploy to battleground states to knock on doors or work phone banks. “It will be determinative,” Butler said of the Sun Belt labor groups' role in the November election. “Arizona is going to be a state that, at the end of the day, will elect the president — President Harris — I truly believe that,” McLaughlin said. “Momentum will carry Vice President Harris and Governor [Tim] Walz through.

WASHINGTON — House Republicans on Wednesday are expected to derail their own plan to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, with the party divided over the length of a short-term funding bill and what, if anything, should be attached to it. Democrats, who want a “clean” three-month funding patch with nothing attached, and nearly all plan to vote no. But the overwhelming majority of rank-and-file Republicans back Johnson’s move, saying holding the vote will put lawmakers on record. Everyone.”Davidson, who was ousted in July from the far-right House Freedom Caucus, lamented that Republicans have failed to unify behind a plan weeks before the election. That would buy time for bipartisan negotiators to strike a longer-term funding deal during the lame-duck session for fiscal year 2025 — if a short-term bill can pass the House.

That cleared the way for counties to start preparing, printing and distributing mail ballots to those who request them. Most rejected ballots are tossed out for arriving after Election Day, but thousands have been rejected for missing signatures and similar paperwork errors. Pennsylvania's mail ballots have once again been the subject of a major election-year legal battle. The state Supreme Court ruled last week that mail ballots with improper dates can't be counted. Looking ahead to November, clerks in Pennsylvania still won’t be able to process any mail ballots before Election Day, meaning it could again take days to count them.

Harris responded that she’d cap child care costs at 7% of working families’ income, following the Biden administration playbook that she was heavily involved in writing. “My plan is that no family, no working family, should pay more than 7% of their household income in child care,” Harris said Tuesday at a National Association of Black Journalists event, noting that steep child care expenses make it difficult for many parents to work. Child care advocates were buoyed by Harris’ answer on Tuesday. Parents with two kids in a child care center paid on average at least twice as much for that care as they did for the typical rent in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, according to a Child Care Aware of America report released in May. That equates to 10% of median household income for a married couple with children and 32% of median income for a single parent with children, Child Care Aware found.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, DC, next week, according to three sources familiar with the planning. Asked Wednesday whether Harris will meet with Zelensky next week, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby suggested she might if the opportunity presented itself. “I know she has met with President Zelensky face-to-face on a couple of occasions, and I know she’s spoken to him on the phone. Earlier Wednesday, former President Donald Trump said he’ll “probably” meet with Zelensky when he travels to the US next week. Ben Higgins tried to parlay his Bachelor success into a political career, but the campaign didn't last long. The focus on Bachelor Nation also makes sense given the franchise's viewership is dominated by one of the most crucial swing votes of recent elections: white women. In the past two presidential elections, white women were the most closely split demographic subgroup tracked by major exit polls. In 2016, Donald Trump won over 52% of white women against Hillary Clinton's 43%, exit polls found, while Trump bested Joe Biden in 2020 among white women 55% to 44%. The overlap between the swingiest demographic and the "Bachelor" audience suggests Bachelor Nation has value to those who seek to lead our nation.

Vice President Kamala Harris called the rate cut “welcome news,” while former President Donald Trump suggested, without evidence, that the decision could be politically motivated. With less than 50 days until Election Day, another question has emerged: Will the rate cut matter to voters? In fact, they already have – mortgages are based on bond yields, which have fallen in recent weeks in anticipation of a rate cut. Harris responded to the rate cut by saying she’s focused on bringing down prices. This story has been updated with reaction to the Fed’s rate cut announcement.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Wednesday announced it will not formally endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, ending months of speculation about whether the labor union would back Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris. With 1.3 million members, the Teamsters union is one of the largest labor groups in the country. "As the strongest and most democratic labor union in America, it was vital for our members to drive this endorsement process. In a national survey of Teamsters members conducted after the Sept. 10 presidential debate, union members overwhelmingly backed Trump over Harris, 58% to 31%, according to results published by the union ahead of its formal endorsement. CNN —The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign highlighted that support from “rank-and-file” Teamsters members following the union’s announcement that it would not be endorsing. CNN previously reported that rank-and-file union membership had large pockets of Trump support, even as major labor leaders endorsed Harris. That survey also included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who garnered about 6% of members’ support. While union members are thought of as a traditionally Democratic voting bloc, Trump has been working to make inroads among rank-and-file members.

Washington CNN —The House failed on Wednesday to pass a six-month GOP government funding plan that included a controversial measure targeting noncitizen voting, an effort pushed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The House vote was 202 to 220, with 14 Republicans voting against it, two Republicans voting present and three Democrats voting for it. Johnson would not reveal on Wednesday ahead of the planned vote what he would do if the GOP government funding plan fails and said he has spoken to Trump “a lot” about government funding after the former president floated a government shutdown. Trump had previously said that if Republicans don’t receive “absolute assurances” about election security, they should not pass a funding extension. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would have extended government funding until March 2025.

And an expert in political violence and terrorism is worried the worst is yet to come. The justification of political violence online is getting worse, too, with increasingly high-profile people laughing off violent incidents. The visit came just days after Shoigu traveled to North Korea for talks with leader Kim Jong Un, and after he met Monday with Syrian leader Bashar Assad. This would mark an escalation in Iran's support for Russia, with the Islamic Republic previously sending aerial drones used by Russia to attack Ukrainian towns and infrastructure. AdvertisementIn recent months, North Korea has reportedly sent millions of shells to Russia, as well as ballistic missiles. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said last week that the delivery of Iranian missiles to Russia had changed the debate about Ukraine using Western long-range missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia. Russia is currently making incremental but important advances in its campaign to seize more territory in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine has occupied parts of Russia's Kursk province, after a surprise attack last month.

Alaska Airlines completes acquisition of Hawaiian

Alaska Airlines said on Wednesday it had completed its $1.9 billion acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines after reaching an agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airlines on Tuesday agreed to maintain key Hawaiian routes and adopt consumer protections under an agreement that will last six years. The Justice Department in August chose not to block the deal that was announced in December by Alaska, the fifth-largest domestic U.S. airline, to merge with Hawaiian, the 10th-largest carrier. Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci said in an interview that the deal would be good for competition and consumers and would expand access for consumers to both networks and give Alaska access to Hawaiian’s fleet of wide-body airplanes. Hawaiian Airlines’ stock will be de-listed and will cease trading on the Nasdaq on Wednesday, Alaska said in a statement.

President Joe Biden, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris have all voiced opposition to the deal. The United Steelworkers union, which has endorsed Harris for president, has also been a leading opponent of the acquisition. Earlier this month, US Steel said it would be forced to lay off workers and shutter mills without Nippon’s backing. US Steel put itself up for sale in 2023 after receiving an unsolicited $7 billion takeover offer from Ohio-based Cleveland Cliffs. CNN —Iranian hackers sent unsolicited information they stole from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to people who were affiliated with Joe Biden’s campaign over the summer, federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday. The law enforcement statement Wednesday said that the hackers’ efforts to send information to US media outlets have continued. Law enforcement officials have previously said that those efforts also included an unsuccessful attempt to hack the Biden-Harris campaign. The Iranian hackers did breach the email account of longtime Trump ally Roger Stone to target campaign staff in June, CNN has reported. Investigators believe the suspected Iranian hackers breached Stone’s account and then used that email account to try to break into the account of a senior Trump campaign official as part of a persistent effort to access campaign networks.
