CNN —A US official with knowledge of American intelligence says Hamas has a command node under the Al-Shifa hospital, uses fuel intended for it and its fighters regularly cluster in and around Gaza’s largest hospital. The information comes after comments made Sunday by a top White House official that Hamas is using hospitals and civilian facilities. Hamas and hospital officials have denied the accusation that the hospital is being used as a command center. But Israel has insisted that patients can be evacuated from the hospital. “Regrettably, the hospital is not functioning as a hospital anymore,” it said.

Glenn Youngkin isn’t on the ballot this year, but his push for a new conservative direction for the Republican Party is. The discipline extended beyond the 10 candidates Youngkin endorsed in competitive primaries, so as to keep distractions at bay. Virginia Democrats, who would normally use such a post to put the entire GOP in an awkward position, did not apparently even notice. Still, there isn’t a lot of evidence that the Virginia Democratic Party sees Youngkin as any sort of liability for the GOP — he isn’t featured negatively in any of their ads, for example. “What we have found out over the last two years is that that vest-wearing, affable, basketball playing dad is really a MAGA Extremist,” said Virginia Democratic Party Chair Susan Swecker.

The failed full-court press to install Republican Rep. Jim Jordan as House Speaker revealed ugly examples of how violent threats are becoming normalized inside Trump’s GOP. According to Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas, the strategy behind the threats is to “Attack, attack, attack. In the run-up to that attack, members of the Proud Boys even bragged that they could dress up as Antifa. In the next breath, however, he says that the war in Israel creates moral urgency to push through a Jim Jordan speakership. Any sense that this was a random unhinged person without a partisan political agenda was demolished by his demand that the congressman vote for “Jim Jordan or more conservative.” This caller has explicit right-wing ideological demands.

CNN —House Republicans picked Rep. Steve Scalise as their nominee for speaker on Wednesday, but the Louisiana Republican lacks the votes needed to win the gavel and it remains unclear whether he will be able to win over holdouts. Scalise won out over Rep. Jim Jordan in a closed-door vote by the House GOP conference to pick their speaker nominee on Wednesday. House Republicans hold a narrow majority and Scalise can only afford to lose four GOP votes on the floor and still win the speakership. McCarthy’s ouster, which was driven by a group of hardline conservatives, has intensified deep divisions within the House GOP conference and escalated tensions. Two candidates, GOP Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio, have already launched campaigns. He’s not the first GOP speaker to think so. But in this political climate, any Republican speaker who has to rely on Democratic votes is critically weakened and probably can’t last long. But the only way a Republican speaker will be able to pass aide to Ukraine will be to do so with Democratic help. The lack of such flexibility has been a fatal flaw of GOP speakers for years.

More importantly Tuesday’s political regicide showed that the majority in the House is inoperable and that the Republican Party is unmanageable. But far from ejecting Biden from office, McCarthy himself was gone in less than a month of launching that inquiry. But a Republican speaker who needs Democratic votes is on borrowed time, although no one could have know that the end would come so soon. For the transgression of trying to fashion some, albeit erratic, governance, McCarthy joined predecessors such as GOP Speaker John Boehner and Paul Ryan in being driven out of office. McCarthy bitterly criticized Democrats for allowing eight GOP rebels to drive him out of office by not providing sufficient votes to save him.
