DETROIT – United Auto Workers has unexpectedly expanded its U.S. strikes at Ford Motor to a highly profitable SUV and truck plant for the automaker in Kentucky. ET at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, where the automaker produces Ford Super Duty pickups as well as the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator. The union's decision to strike the plant, which is Ford's largest in terms of employment and revenue, is a major escalation in its targeted, or "stand up," strikes. Fain said the union expects Stellantis and Ford Motor to follow suit, including battery plant workers in eventual contract agreements. Only 25,200 workers, or roughly 17% of UAW members covered by the expired contracts with the Detroit automakers, are currently on strike.

Advocates for comprehensive sex education say the restrictions in early education may prevent kids from getting age-appropriate foundational knowledge that they build on each year, said Alison Macklin, director of policy and advocacy at the progressive sex education organization SIECUS. To comply with the new law in Kentucky, for example, the state’s education agency advised schools eliminate fifth-grade lessons on puberty and reproductive body parts. Twenty-eight states require sex education, and 35 require HIV education, according to tracking by the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights. Massachusetts, for example, recently announced new sexual health education guidelines, which were last updated in 1999. She remembers just one optional day of sex education in middle school.

It’s not that simple, though, and some researchers argue that the labor savings of electric vehicles have been greatly overstated. These were among several research reports that found little total difference in the labor hour requirements of EV manufacturing compared to gas-powered cars. Boston Consulting estimates that making battery cells takes up about 8% of the total labor to produce an entire automobile. That’s slightly higher than the percentage of labor needed to produce a gasoline engine, he said. Ford also expects to train 5,000 people to work at a joint-venture battery manufacturing facility currently under construction in Kentucky.

CNN —The Powerball jackpot soared to an estimated $1.4 billion for Saturday – which would be the third largest jackpot in the game’s history – after Wednesday night’s drawing turned up no grand prize winner. The prize up for grabs Saturday would also be the fifth largest US lottery jackpot, Powerball says. Powerball has had no grand prize winner since July 19, when a single ticket sold in California won a jackpot worth $1.08 billion. Odds of winning a Powerball prize of any amount are 1 in 24.9, the lottery says. CNN —Ford is pausing work on a new, $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan, even as the transition to electric vehicles has become a major sticking point in a United Auto Workers strike against automakers Ford, GM and Stellantis. No final decision has been made on whether the plant will, ultimately, become operational, said Ford spokesman T.R. If completed, the plant will be located on a 950-acre site in southern Michigan near the town of Marshall. The battery plant was planned to operate in addition to plants in Kentucky and Tennessee that Ford announced in 2021. Ford has said it plans to be able to produce 2 million electric vehicles globally by late 2026.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration announced Monday that it has awarded more than $1.4 billion to projects that improve railway safety and boost capacity, with much of the money coming from the 2021 infrastructure law. The projects include track upgrades and bridge repairs, in addition to improving the connectivity among railways and making routes less vulnerable to extreme weather. “We’ve been fighting to return passenger trains to the Gulf Coast since it was knocked offline by Hurricane Katrina. A project in Kentucky will receive $29.5 million to make improvements to 280 miles of track and other infrastructure along the Paducah and Louisville Railway. And in Tennessee, $23.7 million will go to helping upgrade about 42 bridges on 10 different short-line railroads.

All three states lean heavily Republican in federal elections, yet Democrats currently control the governorship in two out of the three. As usual, we are rating these races on the following scale: Safe Republican, Likely Republican, Lean Republican, Toss-Up, Lean Democratic, Likely Democratic and Safe Democratic. The race moving in the Republican direction is Louisiana, which we’re shifting from Likely Republican to Safe Republican. But for now, we’ll keep it at Likely Republican. New York CNN —Looming over the United Auto Workers strike: Automakers’ continued migration to the anti-union South. Jobs at nonunion EV battery facilities pay less than the roughly $32 an hour that veteran UAW workers make. Since 1990, the South’s share of auto jobs has doubled from around 15% to 30% today, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Mostly nonunion EV jobs and manufacturing investments are surging in Southern states led by Republicans. The South has picked up 66% of planned EV jobs, while projects in Midwestern states such as Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio have combined for 26% of planned jobs, according to S&P Global.

Cameron previously appeared to flip-flop over his opposition to rape and incest exceptions to bans. Ford Motor could face a strike in Canada if no agreement is reached by 11:59 p.m. Monday with the union representing about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, just days after workers at one of its U.S. plants went on strike. On Friday, the United Auto Workers union launched a targeted strike against Ford, General Motors and Chrysler-parent Stellantis , targeting one assembly plant at each company. Canadian union Unifor, whose contract with Ford expires at 11:59 p.m. Monday, said "while we remain at the table the likelihood of a strike increases with each passing hour." Ford has two engine plants in Canada that build V-8 motors for F-series and Super Duty pickups assembled in the United States. Ford on Friday furloughed 600 workers who are not on strike at the Michigan Bronco plant because of the impact of the work stoppage.

Exorbitant CEO pay is a frustration shared by Hollywood creatives and Detroit autoworkers alike. Since 1978, the CEO compensation among America’s 300 biggest companies has gone up 1,460%, while the typical worker’s pay grew by just 18% (both adjusted for inflation), according to the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank. Over the same period, CEO pay at the Big Three Detroit automakers — GM, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis — has jumped an average of 40%, or roughly how much of a raise striking workers are now demanding. But a company’s profit depends not only on bringing in hearty revenue, but also on keeping costs — including workers’ pay — low. CEO pay went up 40%… No one had any complaints about that, but God forbid the workers ask for their fair share,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper last week.

Utilities have limped through much of 2023, but a few catalysts could lift a handful of stocks into the end of the year, according to Morgan Stanley. The wildfires in Maui have drawn attention to how severe weather can pose a risk to utilities. Nevertheless, there could be room for some year-end upside, Morgan Stanley analyst David Arcaro said in a report last week. "We expect a constructive outcome in the case supporting the upper half of earnings guidance," the Morgan Stanley analyst said. Morgan Stanley has an overweight recommendation on all three utilities.

Andy Beshear has seized a commanding fundraising lead over Republican challenger Daniel Cameron in their marquee matchup in Kentucky, their latest campaign finance reports showed. Heading into the fall campaign, Beshear had the advantage of a noncompetitive spring primary campaign, while Cameron exhausted most of his funds during a crowded GOP primary.
