Body-camera footage released Monday showed the fatal police shooting of the 36-year-old Black woman who had called 911 for help. Here’s what you need to know about the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, what happened to it and its chances of passing. The measure seeks to ban racial and religious profiling by law enforcement at the federal, state and local level. It would mandate an overhaul of a legal doctrine known as qualified immunity that critics claim shields law enforcement from accountability. But policing reforms have not been a priority in a Congress where House Republicans are in the majority.

It was one line from an itinerary of an upcoming field trip to Columbia, the capital of South Carolina. And no place proved more prescient than those Capitol steps. CNN —Hunter Biden on Sunday abruptly dropped a lawsuit he filed last month against Fox News over the network’s fictionalized miniseries that he alleged included sexually explicit images of him without consent. Representatives for Hunter Biden didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on Sunday. The miniseries, “The Trial of Hunter Biden,” was a six-part offering that featured a dramatized “mock trial” about Hunter Biden’s overseas financial dealings that led, in part, to his federal tax indictment and claims that fueled House Republicans’ stalled impeachment inquiry into his father. Fox News removed the miniseries from its platforms in late April after Biden threatened to file a lawsuit. While Hunter Biden ended his lawsuit against Fox, his legal challenges continue.

When former President Donald J. Trump met with House Republicans last month, he touched on a mix of policies core to his economic agenda: cutting income taxes while also significantly raising tariffs on foreign goods. Mr. Trump told Republicans he would “love to raise tariffs” and cut income taxes on Americans, potentially to zero, said Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia. “Everyone was clapping in the room,” Ms. Greene said. “He said, ‘If you guys are going to go vote on something today, vote to lower taxes on Americans.’”Tariffs and tax cuts were central to Mr. Trump’s economic thinking while he was in the White House. If he wins in November, he is promising a much more aggressive approach, including potentially a blanket 10 percent tariff on nearly all imports and a 60 percent tax on Chinese goods.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential primary and was recently a finalist to be his running mate, is set to speak. Also on the schedule: Trump's former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who challenged Trump in the 2024 GOP primary and did not immediately endorse him when she ended her presidential campaign. Haley said in an exit speech that Trump would have to "earn the votes" of Republicans who did not back him. Ron DeSantis, who was once seen as Trump's most formidable challenger in the primary, is also on the list.

Experts hold drastically different views, creating a new hot-button topic that will continue to be debated up until the election in November. The camp staunchly opposed to Trump's policiesThe base argument against Trump's fiscal platform is that tariffs are, by nature, inflationary. AdvertisementIn a recent op-ed for the Financial Times, he cited the "benign" impact Trump's first-term tariffs had on the US economy. Looking ahead to a new term, Yardeni thinks Trump's most extreme pursuits will likely be watered down by Congress. Read previewPresident Joe Biden may have to convince some of his own White House officials that he's still their best hope of defeating former President Donald Trump. The White House strongly denied the report. "Unequivocally, this is not true," White House spokesperson Andrew Bates told The Times, a statement he reiterated to Business Insider. Earlier this week, it looked like the White House had successfully frozen most of Capitol Hill not to pressure the president. Biden is set to speak to White House reporters at length Thursday night in his first extensive news conference in months.

CNN —For weeks, the White House press corps has been boiling – and not from the Washington, DC, heat. Some feel the White House misled the press before President Joe Biden’s stumbling performance at last month’s CNN presidential debate. “I think this is a credibility crisis writ large for the White House, and certainly as a spokesperson for the White House, this is a credibility crisis for her,” one White House reporter told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the situation. “We are in the midst of a full-blown feeding frenzy,” former CNN White House correspondent and Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno said. Sesno and former White House correspondents and officials told CNN that questions surrounding Biden’s age and performance, along with how the White House is handling the issue, are legitimate and warrant scrutiny.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and longtime Trump ally, on CBS' "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" Sunday said a new Democratic challenger would make the race "dramatically different" for Trump. "As a human, it's probably good for Joe Biden that he's now probably not going to have to be subjected to this another four years. "Virtually any Democrat that potentially replaces Biden has an exponentially better chance of defeating Trump," the senior House GOP aide told Fox News. AdvertisementWhen Business Insider reached out for comment, representatives for Trump pointed to a recent post on Truth Social in which Trump urged Biden to stay in the race. "Crooked Joe Biden should ignore his many critics and move forward, with alacrity and strength, with his powerful and far reaching campaign," Trump's post, published Saturday, read.

President Joe Biden speaks to supporters during a campaign rally at Sherman Middle School on July 05, 2024 in Madison, Wisconsin. On Saturday, House Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., officially called on Biden to bow out of the presidential race. Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Il., made his own announcement during an MSNBC interview Friday, just before the full ABC News 22-minute interview aired. They join a growing choir of Democratic lawmakers, donors and strategists losing faith in Biden's ability to wage a successful campaign against Trump. Earlier this week, former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., some of Biden's closest allies, publicly validated concerns about Biden's fitness for reelection.

Biden is 81 years old and, if he completes another term, would be 86 by the end of his presidency. There is a move he can take to help turn the tides: Release the Hur tapes. In later testimony before Congress, Hur said Biden "himself put his memory squarely at issue." His White House lawyers also wrote letters objecting to the language, writing Hur characterized Biden's memory "in sweeping, quasi-medical terms." The audio of Biden's interview could be manipulated by deepfakes in a politically volatile moment, they say.

Former President Donald J. Trump’s silence to some extent reflects his desire for President Biden to stay in the race. But Mr. Trump has largely sat back and allowed the Democratic Party to dominate the debate over Mr. Biden’s political future, in a signal of his preferred opponent. Mr. Trump did appear to delight in mocking his rival in a raw video first reported by The Daily Beast on Wednesday and later shared by Mr. Trump. If Mr. Biden stepped aside, Mr. Trump would lose two lines of attack that have been central to his campaign. That message would be hamstrung if another candidate replaced Mr. Biden on the ticket.

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks on the Middle East in the State Dining room at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 31, 2024. For likely voters, Trump led Biden by a slightly smaller 6-point margin, though that was 3 points higher than before the debate. The New York Times poll surveyed 1,532 registered voters across the country from June 28 to July 2. While Biden's campaign continues its blitz, pressure mounts for the president to consider bowing out of the 2024 race. In response, the White House and the Biden campaign have rolled out a slate of events for the coming week to reassure the public.

After Biden’s lackluster performance last week, some are questioning whether the White House press corps dropped the ball on fully covering Biden’s limitations. Nearly every media outlet has reported on growing concerns about Biden’s age well before the debate. Several White House reporters told CNN that the coverage of Biden’s age and his mental stamina should have pushed harder. The White House press shop has also been very “aggressive” and “fairly successful” in mitigating coverage of concerns over the president’s age, said another White House reporter who works for a different publication. “I think the press, most of the White House press, did suffer from a bit of lack of curiosity,” one of the reporters said.

The Republican-led House voted on Friday to strip President Biden’s homeland security secretary and secretary of state of their salaries. It approved measures banning military installations from having drag queen story hours for children. The provisions were included in three spending bills to fund the Departments of Defense, State and Homeland Security that House Republicans muscled through largely along party lines — even though none of them have any hope of becoming law. With a government funding deadline looming at the end of September and a high-stakes election in November, lawmakers have entered a period of legislative theatrics, where each chamber is advancing spending bills that the other will never approve. In the House, for a second year in a row, that has meant that Republican leaders have opened the floodgates to a barrage of conservative priorities.

House Republicans on Wednesday advanced legislation that would slash funding for the Department of Justice and U.S. attorneys’ offices across the country, the latest attempt by the G.O.P. to punish federal law enforcement agencies that they claim have been weaponized against conservatives, especially former President Donald J. Trump. The spending bill, approved along party lines by a subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee, would cut funding for salaries and other expenses at the Justice Department by 20 percent, and for U.S. attorneys’ offices by 11 percent. It is also an early example of how House Republicans are again trying to inject the annual government spending bills with partisan policy mandates aimed at amplifying political grievances and culture war issues. A similar process played out last year, but the most conservative measures were ultimately jettisoned in bipartisan negotiations with Senate Democrats and the White House.
