For Appen, that would mean finding specialists in particular types of information that can bolster generative AI systems. Even before the generative AI transition, wages for Appen's data labelers were a sticking point. Kim Stagg, Appen's vice president of product, said the work required for generative AI services was different than what the company has needed in the past. "With generative AI, we see a different demand." The company's plunging stock price suggests that investors don't see the company's business offerings transferring to the generative AI space.

Meta's return-to-office mandate went into effect on Tuesday, requiring employees to work from the company's physical locations at least three days a week. The company began notifying employees in June of the coming change, which will not impact Meta's current roster of remote workers. Any employee assigned to an office, however, will need to comply with the rules starting this week. Facebook parent Meta first extended its remote-work policy to all full-time employees in June 2021. "This analysis also shows that engineers earlier in their career perform better on average when they work in-person with teammates at least three days a week."

OpenAI on Monday announced its biggest news since ChatGPT's debut: It's launching ChatGPT Enterprise, the AI chatbot's business tier, available starting Monday. ChatGPT Enterprise includes access to GPT-4 with no usage caps, performance that's up to two times faster than previous versions, and API credits. One key differentiator between ChatGPT Enterprise and the consumer-facing version: ChatGPT Enterprise will allow clients to input company data to train and customize ChatGPT for their own industries and use cases, although some of those features aren't yet available in Monday's debut. When asked how ChatGPT Enterprise compares with Bing Chat Enterprise, Microsoft's enterprise AI chatbot, an OpenAI representative told CNBC, "This is an OpenAI product independent of Microsoft. The biggest obstacle to ChatGPT Enterprise's development was figuring out how to prioritize features, Lightcap told CNBC.

Instacart, the grocery delivery company that slashed its valuation during last year's market slide, filed its paperwork to go public on Friday in what's poised to be the first significant venture-backed tech IPO since December 2021. In May, Instacart said it was leaning into the generative AI boom with Ask Instacart, a search tool that aims to answer customers' grocery shopping questions. Instacart will try and crack open the IPO market, which has been mostly closed since late 2021. In March of last year, Instacart slashed its valuation to $24 billion from $39 billion as public stocks sank. Apoorva Mehta, Instacart's founder and executive chairman, plans to transition off the board after the company's public market debut, according to a 2022 release.

IBM said Tuesday it's selling its weather unit, including The Weather Channel mobile app and websites, Weather.com, Weather Underground and Storm Radar. IBM will sell The Weather Company and its assets to Francisco Partners, a tech-focused private equity firm, for an undisclosed sum. As part of the deal, IBM will retain access to the company's weather data, which it uses to power some of the artificial intelligence models it sells to enterprise clients. One of those bets is Watsonx, the enterprise AI development tool IBM announced in May that's slated to debut in the third quarter. The platform includes a feature for AI-generated code, an AI governance toolkit, and a library of thousands of large-scale AI models, trained on language, geospatial data, IT events and The Weather Company's weather data, which IBM will continue to use.

That's all according to a Thursday report from researchers at Arthur AI, a machine learning monitoring platform. AI hallucinations occur when large language models, or LLMs, fabricate information entirely, behaving as if they are spouting facts. Meta's Llama 2, on the other hand, hallucinates more overall than GPT-4 and Anthropic's Claude 2, researchers found. In a second experiment, the researchers tested how much the AI models would hedge their answers with warning phrases to avoid risk (think: "As an AI model, I cannot provide opinions"). "Making sure you really understand the way the LLM performs for the way it's actually getting used is the key."

In the Tunisian port city of Sfax this month, I sat with a group of men in a sandy, windswept park. The men, who were Darfuris, explained that they had escaped what they called a new genocide in Sudan. There are dozens — maybe hundreds — of Sudanese currently staying in that park in Sfax, and thousands across the city. Last week, 41 people were reported to have died after a shipwreck off the Italian coast. This is what a crisis of human rights, ethics and, above all, global inequality looks like.

In an aerial view, Chevrolet Cruise autonomous vehicles sit parked in a staging area on June 08, 2023 in San Francisco, California. On Thursday, California regulators voted to approve round-the-clock robotaxi service in San Francisco from two rival companies: Waymo and Cruise. By Friday night, a group of Cruise vehicles had stopped short in the city's North Beach neighborhood, flashing hazard lights and causing a traffic backup, according to reports. "There's over 10,000 human ride-hail drivers in San Francisco, potentially much more than that, depending on how you count it," Vogt said on the call. So it does not make a very high number to generate significant revenue in a city like San Francisco.

Zoom wants to train its artificial intelligence models using some of your data, according to recently updated terms of service. The update, effective as of July 27, establishes Zoom's right to utilize some aspects of customer data for training and tuning its AI, or machine learning models. Customer content such as messages, files and documents do not seem to be included in this category. But when a user does enable these features, Zoom has them sign a consent form allowing Zoom to train its AI models using their individual customer content. A Zoom spokesperson said in a statement that "Zoom customers decide whether to enable generative AI features, and separately whether to share customer content with Zoom for product improvement purposes."

CNN —A massive, out-of-control fire burning across both California and Nevada is generating extreme fire behavior, spawning “fire whirls” and creating dangerous conditions for firefighters, authorities said. Firefighters battling the blaze have seen fire whirls – “a vortex of flames and smoke that forms when intense heat and turbulent winds combine, creating a spinning column of fire,” the Mojave National Preserve said Sunday. Crews battlling the York Fire faced "fire whirls" Sunday in the Mojave National Preserve, California. Ty O'Neil/AP“These fire whirls are similar to dust devils but are specifically associated with the heat and energy released by a wildfire,” the Mojave National Preserve said. The struggle to control the York Fire has allowed smoke to reach into Nevada and southern Utah, the fire incident overview noted.

What comes up must come down — at least in the case of user engagement on Threads, Meta 's new Twitter competitor. "The Threads launch really did 'break the internet,' or at least the Sensor Tower models," Anthony Bartolacci, managing director at Sensor Tower, a marketing intelligence firm, told CNBC. "In the 10-plus years Sensor Tower has been estimating app installs, the first 72 hours of Threads was truly in a class by itself." Threads saw a dropoff of more than 25% in daily active users between its July 7 peak and Monday for Threads users on Android phones worldwide. Since its debut on July 5, Threads made headlines for its Instagram sign-up integration, algorithmic feed and positive sentiment from advertisers.

Elon Musk's X Corp., the parent company of Twitter, filed a lawsuit against four unknown entities last week over data scraping on Twitter. Data scraping is when automated programs scour publicly accessible websites to collect data, which can later be used for a wide range of purposes, including training artificial intelligence large language models, targeting online advertisements and much more. The ruling reaffirmed the appeals court's decision, finding that scraping public data does not violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. "Corp. has also limited access to Tweets for users who are not signed in to registered Twitter account." "By unlawfully scaping data, Defendants flagrantly ignore not only Corp.'s Terms of Service, but also the privacy preferences of Twitter users," the filing stated.
